View Full Version : Horn Upgrade

For the last year or so, every time we've had to use the horn (not just on the roads, but also during steering wheel fitting, to say "bye" on the way out, etc) i've noticed that the Magna horn sounds... well, kinda pissweak. lol
I'm curious to know what other cars out there have a decent horn that I can wire up into the TR. There's plenty at the wreckers, but because the cars aren't running there's no way to tell. Only other good one i've heard is on a Mazda 929 Limited Edition, but those are rare as hens teeth these days.
I'll look into the law and regulations of this kind of mod, but at the moment i'm just after a suggestion for make/model of car to pull a horn from. I may search down any suggested car and test it, but it'll still be nice to narrow down the selection a little before I take to 5000 cars with a battery and test probe.
Cheers

do you want loud or a different sound? by your description of the TR magna horn and the fact my bro owns one, i do agree they dont really have any presence... the only car to have less presence with the horn are S series nissans.
I dont mind the euro sound of r33 skylines...similar to beamers

Twin air horns are your friend. I put the horns and compressor behind my grille and the relay in the battery box. Easily able to be returned to standard, too.

I had some in my last car, triple ones, but they were a bit p****... I think it's coz they were under the hood and not loud enough.
Best thing about air horns was working on my car with my bro, id ask him to watch the water level or something and id jump in the cab and BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP

Seriously, who cares what yuor horn sounds like :bowrofl:
How often do you actually need to use it? I think I've used mine about twice ever.

but in the few times you do need to use your horn - some guy cuts you off, somebody pulls out in front of you - you want to let them know you are there. and that there isn't an old granny behind the wheel.
ive heard that bmw horns are good.
its not like its an expensive mod. i say go ahead and do it.

Good point there... I suppose considering I was going to replace the horn anyway, I figured it may as well be a decent sounding one.

Hah Hah, I've played with this for while in my head. You can usually adjust the pitch of a horn with the lock-nutted thread built on the rear of the horn. So If you had three and tuned them with a guitar tuner you can actually get a chord.lol
Try the 380 horn, or if you want, drive like you don't give a hoot, and you'll get to hear plenty:badgrin:

I agree, I have always wanted to change my horn, on my old car as well, when someone pisses you off or cuts into you and you let your anger out on the horn.... and this piss weak high-pitched beeeep comes out thats not that loud.
I really like the one on my dad's Mazda6, its like both high and low pitched at the same time so its got the urgency of the high pitch and the oopmh and loudness of the low pitch. Makes people react pretty damn fast when you slam down the horn lol

I bought some Type R brand electric shell horns from Auto Pro for about $25 and they sound like my friend's BMW horns. Yes the Camry horns are quite good too, but when I installed one in my car that I got from a wreck, it had a slightly different note and wasn't as loud as it is in my mum's Camry for some reason.

I have one of these to fit to my car but my wiring wont power it. Is there anything i can do to upgrade the wiring or something? Or maybe its busted i dunno.

You'd have to test it, it should be 12v (check it), I would disconnect the positive (just to be careful) and run a wire from the positive on the battery and quickly (i mean Quick you have no fuse there) touch it on the positive of the horn, if it works it'll scare the bejeesus out of ya. Ensure the horn has a good earth. A bad earth will oscillate the pitch ( like a flickering lightglobe)
I dont think a twin horn would need a fuse though. ( Confirmation please guys ).
If it works the magna has not enough power going to it and then I'd fit a relay off the original horn wire.
If it doesn't its screwed.
Google ' horn relay '
I never fitted a relay before, but if this post is really wrong someone will correct me.
I would like to know volts and amps on the old and new horn, that would be a big help.
Cant beat La-cook-a-racha air horns

+ 1 on that. Twin Fiamms
I thought air horns were not allowed on passenger vehicles. I'm think that's the regs in Victoria anyway.
2007 lancer I had as a rental last weekend had a good loud horn - made the neighbours look out their windows.

im not to sure on that. i know that if you have novelty horns they have to be separate to your actual steering wheel horn..but other then that somebody would have to check.

Should be, someone in my 'folks car club has a 2003 PT Cruiser with 4 novelty horns separate to the factory horn. I think it's just as long as your original equipment is still functional.
Cheers for the suggestions everyone, i'll write these down and take a look through the wrecking yard soon. Air horns would be alright, but i'd like to stay close to the stock setup and keep the cost low enough.

Thats because the buyer is responsible for legalities, not the manufacturer, and the easiest way is to use the original horn button, its just not the legal way,i would run a seperate switch/button myself if i had airhorns, then again i would probably get a set of the hella low/high tone electric scroll horns, they will be bloody loud without being airhorn annoying!,then i would run them of the original button aswell through a seperate relay

I agree with the 929 horns, I've had about 7 929s\luces\cosmos over the years and they always had nice loud horns (when I used them) most likely cause they all had twin horns, one each side under\behind the bumper

Ford made falcon horns good to warn people passing by that your car is broken down, or to honk at people when they overtake your slow ass:badgrin:
PS I'm only poking fun at fords, i drive a bloody magnalol
