View Full Version : Removing old steering wheel

Hey folks,

so i've managed to get the old steering wheel off now, quite easily infact, and i only swore once when it actually came off cuz it whacked into the bolt and i thought i broke something!
So your ideas worked but now i've come up with the problem of the horn not working on the new one. Showed the old feller and he pointed out that my old steering wheel (glx) had a metal ring around the centre hole on the back of the wheel which lined up with a sort of single pin spring mechanism for the horn to work. The problem with the new one is it's a verada with cruise control and has 5 small pins on opposite sides , and while one set of these pins might match up, as soon as i turn the steering wheel, they would break off (as they are facing one way), i'm guessing the verada steering column would have 5 grooves to match these rather than one spring pin so i'm wondering if there's a solution to this or am i just gunna have to find a 3rd gen one or something with no cruise control and get that to fit?
Cheers folks,

The way i did it was to unscrew the main bolt til the point where its just come off contact with the wheel, but still on the thread, then love tap around the wheel with a mallet, then try and pull the wheel towards you, leaving the bolt on the thread stops the wheel from slamming into your nose:)

Its never happened to me yet but yeah leave the bolt on the end ;)

hahaha cheers folks,
Will try again tomorrow and let you all know how it goes.
That was one thing i was worried about, the steering wheel jumpin off n smackin me in the nose hahahaha so cheers for that.
It's been on there for 16.5 years now so i'm guessing it's sposed to be a bit stiff,

Yeh, as already said, leave the bolt on there with a bit of room to play, and just keep pulling and tugging in every direction harder and harder, and it will eventualyl free itself. Try wobble back and forth, side to side etc instead of just pulling.

Oh, and if you havent already, mark down where straight ahead is or keep the wheels straight, otherwise you will havev to guess and might have to adjust it after putting it back on...

What i did was loosen the middle nut but not take it off, then i started the car (dont know if you need to) and quickly turn the wheel left-right-left-right a few times and it just slid off. Mine has only been there 5 years though.

I put the nut on the end a gave it a few taps with a rubber malet to crack the seal then it poped off easy,

This is the most important part. Don't forget it. :P

It'll be on there pretty firm, but not seized. Mine was on there for 18-19 years. I couldn't do it myself at first either, Dad had a crack at it though and after giving it a absolute bashing, the wheel came off. Comes off fast as well, best to have that bolt loosely on the column.
Something tells me you sucked at maths, a 91 model TR couldn't be more than 17.5years old at this point in time at its very oldest. Yet your wheel has been connected to the car longer than its existence......hmmmm

Yeah just yank it a few million times, or get a steering wheel puller?

Alright mate, I meant to say 17-18 years. It's a pretty simple mistake otherwise.

hahaha lets just say it's been a long time :D
As i said, will give it a go tomorrow, if worst comes to worst i'll pull out the wd-40 hahahaha
will let you all know how i go, again thanks for the responses guys, i'm sure it'll be a lot easier now :)

I don't get it...so many people have problems taking the 'wheel off...yet when I did mine, the hardest thing to remove was its retaining bolt...partly because I didnt have a long enough ratchet extension to do it...mine looked like it had rusted onto the steering column, yet it slid straight off...and the new one fit extremely comfortably over the splines...

the joint on mine resembles some precision joint work of a heart surgeon and the force of 1000 elephants squishing the two bits together hahaha.
Probably doesn't help that i'm a scrawy twiggy bloke with no muscles :p
I think you may have had a one off lucky break with ur steering wheel champ.
(yes i know the surgeon, elephant thing was a bit lame but i couldn't think of any other way to describe it)

What you need to get is a slip ring from a SE (with cruise) or Verada.A slip ring is a round piece of plastic which one half rotates with the steering wheel, it has 2 wire harness, 1 for the horn and the other for the cruise control.
It mounts between the combination switch (stalks) and the steering wheel.Without it, it will be hard to make the horn work.

i'm assuming i should just go to the wreckers or try here right?
From your description it's just two disks joined together and one side stays in touch with these prongs on the steering wheel while the other side would look very similar to the old ring on my old steering wheel yeh?
If so i'll see if i can get one, thought it was gunna be a straight swap for the steering wheels =(
Would i have the same problem with a 3rd gen steering wheel as well?
Or is the problem only because it has cruise control?
Cheers

Yeah, that's right and the cruise controls the problem and I reckon the 3rd gen be the same but not sure. The wreckers should have one.If you can't get one I might have one laying about somewhere.

Pretty sure you wont have any problems with the steering wheel. But I think thats not your problem at the moment, its getting you steering wheel off :D Even if its different which I doubt, you shouldnt need any more parts, at worst, you might need to cut and join the horn wires together.

Nope, won't work unless you want the wires to twist around the steering wheel till they snap!and where are suppose connect the wires to?.There's a metal pin in front of the combination switches that make contact with the metal ring on the steering wheel.
Tired all that you need that slip ring.
If the wheel won't come off use a steering wheel puller that's what you suppose to use but I always got my off without one.

already got the steering wheel off today mate :D
Tried fitting the new verada one today and the horn connections are different. The steering column has a little pointy spring loaded thing that touched a brass circle on the bottom of the OLD steering wheel. The problem is, there is no brass circle on the bottom of the verada one i bought off you. Instead, it has two sets of 5 brass "prongs" and obviously brass prongs + spring loaded stick thingy = breakage if i turn the steering wheel more than a few inches or no horn at all.
Not sure opilot if yours had a slipring on it or not?
Unless you had to keep it for your new steering wheel?
Anyways, if anyone has access to a slipring they could get to me for free that'd be great

ill take some tomorrow, pretty sure it's just a matter of getting the slip-ring mentioned off a verada or magna se with cruise control.
Damn thing is taking longer than i expected, haha, it's just a steering wheel! Although it'll look a lot better than the rubbish stock tr one i have atm...

Ok,
For startyers NEVER HIT THE CENTRE NUT OR SHAFT, you have a collapsable steering column, you it it, you stuff it.

Get a steering wheel buller, a harmonic ballancer puller or similar and take it off that way. Make sure the nut is on part way as if the wheel lets go you will wear it.

The other part you need is called a clock spring, it is simply a disk with contacts inside, not hard to fit.

thanks for all the help with the steering wheel guys.
As i've said above, i'm no longer having troubles getting the steering wheel off, it came off fine, the problem i'm having is that the horn connections are different in the verada one to the old one as the verada one has cruise control. I believe i need a slip ring which i'm trying to get a hold of.
cheers folks,

Clock spring is only used on the airbag steering wheel and it will not work on non airbag wheel as the combination switches, steering column and the way the steering column is bolted to the underside of the dash support bar all differ from the non airbag steering wheel.
I found this out when I tried to use a standard steering on my TS which has a airbag it also states this in the workshop manual.

A pic would help coz im a bit confused, but this new wheel is a non - airbag wheel...

Are you sure you cant use the metal bit from behind your old steering wheel?

The old metal bit appears to be glued into the actual rubber of the steering wheel (already looked at detaching the back parts but they wouldn't line up if i removed them....
Need to find a decent wreckers nearby to me i think
