View Full Version : Noise from Steering

When I am turning the steering wheel and I go all the way so I can't turn the steering wheel anymore it makes this screetching noise, it only happens when the steering is fully extended to the end, if I hear the noise and I turn the steering wheel back ever so slightly the noise will go away, as long as I don't steer to the maximum then the noise won't be there.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Check your power steering fluid level. Could be your power steering belt slipping, or it could be a sign of power steering pump on the way out. Since you say that it only happens at full lock then I would say that it's fluid or belt related. I doubt it would be a pump. Keep an ear on it to see of it gets worse.

It is the power steering pump/belt being put under stress. you should
never fully lock a car with power steering. Always go back slightly after
full lock.

Exactly what Vlad said. You shouldn't hit full lock with power steering, it stresses it.

On full lock, the pump goes into a bypass, so maybe your bypass is stuffed, causing the pump to hesitate, hence the belt slipping and the screeching noise.

Otherwise, to be really silly, and use your post word for word, tongue in cheek style:

When you turn the steering wheel so far it won't go anymore, you are steering that hard that the tyres are squealing on the road... SLOW DOWN, and don't turn so hard..

Just joking :D

Thanks for the advice, just sometimes, it's hard to turn out of a tight parking spot especially with a magna as it has a big turning circle.

Yea, like everyones said. Most probably power steering wither the pump or belt.

make sure ur not low on fluid either. I left mine for over a year stupidly and split a hose. Didint have P/S for about a week.. I dont know if it was bad for the car but i didnt have time to fix it. Bloody bitch to drive but.
Good workout for ur arms ;) ..

my 2 cents...

Id say most likely belt. Mine made noise for a while then it didnt, then it did, then it didnt, then it broke. Might need tensioning aswell.

yeah your pinching the power steering..
in Fords it's really bad. my brother would have to replace parts of his powersteering ause it would full lock and snap..
