Just did a search and couldn't find anything of relevance, i was just reading another thread and found this headunit AVH-P4000DVD, i like the look of it and wouldn't mind buying one come tax-time, veradas come with double din headunits so im assuming they can be installed?
Also without going outside and hacking up the console, can the single din storage pocket that came stock on my car be removed easily to make way for a double din headunit like this?

Edit: I just found a few different brands, they all look pretty good, i was just reading about some safety feature which makes them turn off when the handbrake is on so you cant use it while driving, just wondering for anyone who has one of these installed, does this turn the whole unit off so you cant even play music? And can this safety thing be turned off.
Cheers guys.

Edit Edit: Just did another search in the car audio section and realised i need a double fascia off a verada, problem solved, just need to know if anyone has had any troubles installing one of these before space wise? and if the handbrake thing can be turned off.....

Yeah i know lol, feel a little silly for posting now, should of done a proper decent search, not a half assed one, still need someone who has installed something double din in there, if a verada stock double din fits in there, im assuming an aftermarket one will fit in no worries?
And the handbrake thing can be avoided by just not wiring the handbrake crap in?

Ah sweet, looking at the JVC double din dvd players, look pretty good, does yours work with the handbrake on? Do you just not wire it in when installing the headunit?

I'm sure what you mean about the handbrake. Unless it has something to do with DVD players.....mine works either way.

EDIT... Sorry just re-read your first post

I was reading around before and few pages said that the headunits that play dvds turn off when the handbrake is off to stop people watching them while the car is in motion, im guessing its easy to turn off, probably just dont wire something in.

I'm sure there would be a way around it!!

I didnt know they wouldnt work when the car was moving!

I've seen heaps that work when the car is moving.

Well, there's always ways to get around the handbrake wiring, but it's there for a reason, not only is it illegal to have a screen active in the front seats while driving, but it's also downright deadly, and quite frankly you'd be a ******** to drive with 'em on.

Is that so? How do people get away with having GPS screens on then? Why do new cars come with them built into the dash? Is it just the dvds that dont play when the car is on?
I wouldn't be watching dvds while im driving, i just dont wanna buy one of these things and then have it not play music while im driving.

Yeah, it's illegal to have a screen running while the car is in motion. Not sure how GPS gets away with this although voice readouts may be one way. From what I can tell the handbrake assembly turns off the display but not necessarily everything else so music should still play.

Don't get me wrong, not attacking you personally, but people trying to watch DVDs while driving is just plain dumb.
The handbrake system would just be hooked into the screen playback; obviously cutting off the music would make the thing completely useless.
GPS's are exempt, being a navigational aid. That said, I've seen some downright stupid placements of them; by law they mustn't interfere with your field of vision, but I've seen people hanging them off their reaview mirrors and the like. Just feel like hitting them over the head with the old cluebat.
ID3 tags, equalisers, etc are fine, cause you just glance at them on occasion to get updated; same with a GPS. But you don't just glance at a DVD, most of your attention is focused on it, which means it isn't on the road.

well, im not going to weigh into the DVD goin while driving debate. law is there and its there for a reason

i have a dvd player and i have by-passed the handbrake thing. and it is done by simply earthing the handbrake wire. not rocket science. i have done it cos my display turns off even if im listening to the radio or listening to a cd and cos its a touchscreen i need to be able to see it.

i simply choose not to watch DVDs while im driving...simple really :)

Did you install your own headunit? How does it wire into the handbrake? Does it have to be wired into the handbrake to work?

The Driving while watching a DVD thing is interesting actually. It depends on what it is. You shouldn't be looking at the screen, period, but a music dvd or a comedian or something is still good to have on in the background, and for that reason alone I wouldn't prohibit the use of the dvd function when the car is moving.

I've been in a couple of different cars as a passenger with dvd's playing in the front, you don't really pay attention to it unless you've got a movie running :P Those drivers haven't crashed the cars yet while driving them them on, afaik  But yeah don't lol

I read what he said, i was asking if the headunit needs to be wired into the handbrake to even start working, like i mean if you dont wire the safety thingo into the handbrake thing will the headunit even function?

I wired one of these DVD stereos in for a friend a while back. From memory, the handbrake wire on the stereo/DVD player (which I will from now on call the SWITCH/SAFETY WIRE) is supposed to wire into the little indicator light on the dashboard (from the switch on the handbrake). When the handbrake is pulled up, the switch on the handbrake is activated and illuminates the little red warning light on the dashboard (so you don't accidentally leave the handbrake pulled on a couple of clicks and drive round and burn out the handbrake shoes), once wired up, this will also tell the stereo that it is safe to play DVD's.

On my friends Dvd player, I seem to remember the screen would come out, but would not play DVD's when this circuit was inactive (ie, when the handbrake was down - driving postion). I guess all models are different in their saftey functions though, so don't take this as standard across all manufacturers and ranges. Some may not allow the screen to come out until the handbrake is pulled. (he bought this one from overseas from the net).

Now, I don't want to get into the safety debate, I'm simply trying to answer the question that yes, you can easily bypass this safety feature. From memory on my friends car, the switch/safety wire on the DVD player needed to be earthed to be able to play DVDs. If wired to manufacturers instructions, it gets this earth from the aforementioned dashboard light (which is operated from a switched earth). All you have to do, is permenantly wire the DVD switch/safety wire to the normal stereo earth and it will work all the time, regardless of what the handbrake is doing. Double check this earth situation in the stereo instructions before you start wiring, but I'm pretty sure that's how they all work.

It's probably against the law to do this, and as mentioned before, it is not a particulary bright idea to drive round while trying to watch DVD's. If the screen comes out regardless, then there is no reason not to wire the switch/safety wire up properly to the handbrake.

Hope this helps.

these days tho, a lot of the newer dvd headunits are starting to turn towards a mercury switch inline for the safety wire for the hadnbrake - ie when the car moves, the mercury moves around and it breaks the circuit which then cuts the screens display - to get around people that just earth it out.

my alpine headunit (while being 3rd gen i know) i have got the safety wire earthed - but do not earth it thru the wiring harness for the radio - its not good enough, it needs to be earthed to some nice clean metal for it to work.

i very rarely have my screen out - as its starting to break, it sticks / doesnt come out by itself, i have to help the motor by pulling on the screen but once its out a few cms it moves open freely - and will close itself freely too.

with the safety wire on the alpine (at least mine) when its working correctly - it cuts picture to the screen, but leaves sound playing. i quite frequently have a music dvd in there with the screen closed so i still get the dvd sound - but no cop attention for watching a dvd while in motion.
