Ill try to make it as simple as possible man.....

- Jack front of car up and remove tyres

- You will see a 10or12mm nut holding a cable, remove this. You will see a flat clamp thing holing your brake hose, remove this with pliers. You will see 2x17mm nuts on the bottom on the shock, remove these and the bolts going thru the shock. It should now be limp at the bottom.

- Open bonnet there are 3 nuts holding the strut in place, either 14mm or 17mm cant remember, remove these.

- Remove strut from wheel arch.

- Use spring compressors to compress the spring in the strut. (Rattle gun makes this 1 million times easier)

- Undo nut on top of strut (rattle gun again), remove strut top plates, spring and spring insulators.

- Transfer insulators, spring and strut top plate to new shock, replace top nut.

- Release spring compressors.

- Repeat for opposite side.

- Installation is opposite of removal.

Just remember there is a marker in the top of the strut so you know its facing the correct direction. Note this and ensure its in the same position after you re-assemble your new ones.

Hope it helps, its only a 1 hour job if you have a rattle gun and a mate to help you.

Before you undo the two nuts holding the strut to the steering knuckle, put some compession on the spring first with the compressors.

I found that if you do this your less likely to have the strut, as there is still some comression on the strut, shoot down real fast to your cv boot and tear it.

It happened to me on my old TH.

DO NOT USE A RATTLE GUN ON SPRING COMPRESSORS!!! unless you wish one to come off and take your head with it!!!

Most good compressors will also give you that warning

Also get good compressors, not cheap supercrap ones, they will tend to bend and come off.

If you do not want to pay for the firment, take them to a garage with a proper unit and have them swap over the parts then put them back in the car yourself

Also, if they have been on their side, either sit them up over night or prime them before you put them in.

yeah dude you gotta be very careful doing struts... believe it or not inexperienced people have been killed doing it before, so if you're not quite sure what you're doing get it done professionaly. There is A LOT of compression and if a spring were to come out unexpectedly and hit you... well yeah could be very painful at best...

saying this I'll probs be replacing my mcpherson struts some day soon... this diy could be handy, although i'll still be getting help from someone who has done it many times before :)

anyways good luck with it all.

plus using a rattle gun on spring compressors heats them up bigtime. Most shops still use a rattle gun anyway but just in short bursts and horizontally where the strut or spring just shoots away rather than into your head.

Mehhhh, used a rattle gun on the compressors plenty of times, haven't been killed yet, chewed out a few sets of compressors though
