they're pretty good, will currently get all cop stations etc.... BUT sometime in the very near future, all cops are going to Digital radios (may have already happened in some areas) and this unit will not pick them up!!!
I mainly want it for going on cruises etc but it having a built in scanner aswell does have it's bonuses at the moment as you say. :D

i have the model up from this fantastic unit easy to install but to recieve cop channels u need to chip it as they use channels 41 - 60 or something like that. Built in scanner is just that, it scans the 40 channels for active ones (people talking, data being transmitted etc)

(if fills in the time at work quite nicely!).
You can also buy a similar version of this which combines both UHF and VHF radios into one unit (my dad has this version in his Patrol)

Thank god for that, Trinedy you had me worried there for a second!
Fortunately however I don't have to pay for it until it get's installed next Thursday so if it doesn't do exactly what I want I have between now and then to figure that out.

just been reading into this a little more and i'd check with the dealer if it does get the cops... i've heard that Uniden brought out a couple of versions of the same radio (same model number and all), and as i have only used the older ones, maybe the newer ones have the cops stations cancelled as Trinedy mentioned. If this is the case i'm sorry for getting it wrong... its just that the ones i've used have all been able to hear the cops and they haven't changed the model code!!!
This review of the UH-013 from Uniden intimates that you should be able to get the cop channels

I was talking to a detective once and he said that there's lots of cops who don't use CB much. They reverted to mobile phones, especially for SERT operations. A lot of them got ticked off at the clowns who listen in then turn up where they shouldn't.

It's in - I get fairly good range/signal but nothing fantastic as I only opted for a smallish antenna/aerial (mounted on my back shelf), should be plenty of range for any cruises though!
I'll post some pics later this arvo when I get a chance.
Thanks.

just a quickie akko mate. how much did it cost? installed? and where is it situated?
Trav
UH-013 plus areial/antenna (w/ base) and install. $540.00 (cheaper than it normally would be cause I know the installers).
But the guys who installed it also wired up some neons for me that I supplied also so that added slightly to the install costs also.
I've remotely located the head so that it sits on the ash-tray (when open), otherwise I have it packed away in the glove box out of sight.
As my Alpine headunit takes up 2-DIN slots I couldn't mount it in the stock position.

So the aerial is mounted inside the car? Hmm...I always thought about getting a mounted UHF but I never liked the idea of those ugly aerial mounts and the big whips (unless it's on a 4WD :D ). Does anybody know if you can get window mounted mobile phone style aerials for UHF radios?
Would love to see the pics when you get them dude.
PICS...

interesting mounting.... as you mentioned it wont give very good range... but will be sweet for cruises...
i havent seen any window mounted antenna's (aka mobile style) as they are pretty crap for range (probably worse than the inside setup)
i think you are able to get the clear sticker type though (the ones that you stick to your window... i'll try and find out
so ,does it get the cops akko?

Cheers dingo. By the way, which DSE do you work at?
Was just thinking more into it, and I think I should probably go with a handheld unit anyways. But I've always been pretty serious about quality and range and stuff...some call it overkill, I call it...well...overkill.
Nonetheless, what I would like to get is a handheld that has a cigarette lighter adaptor, and an external mic. I'm not sure if Uniden makes any such accessories, however GME do, I think.
Thanks for the pics akko! Nice job.
so ,does it get the cops akko?
Haven't programmed in the channels/frequencies for that yet.
Should be getting a 2004 frequencies guide book from DSE today, my mates tell me they sell em there...

[/quote:c91d5ddf5a]haha.... umm the tighes hill one (you know, near the TAFE in Mayfield, end of the Iso stripe area!), but i haven't been called in for a while, and i'm not sure if i actually still work there!!! :? i know its really quiet this time of year and that store gets stuff all work anyway!!!
Akko, DSE should sell them, the trick will be whether they have the most up to date one!! check www.dse.com.au to find out more...

uniden make a few smaller handhelds which can take a external mic, and also a ciggy adapter... but they can't work together... comes from the mic plug being the same plug as the power in....
if you can spare the extra $150-$200 bucks the installed units are way better, transmit at 5W, not 0.5-1W (there is a 2W version by uniden), and you can have them on all the time, scanning (the truckies are a huge help to piggy locations

Just had a quick search and couldn't find what I was looking for, i'll go into DSE today when i'm in town later this arvo and ask them - Thanks.

Thanks for that dingo, I will check it out.
The problem with an installed one is it's always in my car. Now, I love my car, but when I go camping with my folks, my TE just isn't gonna cut the mustard over the rough terrain, so it would be handy to have a handheld to lend to my sister or whoever else is in a 4WD.
Maybe I should get an installed one in my car, and convince my old man to buy a couple of handhelds. Hmm.... :-k

Hmm.... :-kyeah that's the idea!!! i have a handheld unit UH040 with a ext mic/speaker (i use rechargable batteries), and i use it on road trips and also on motorbikes when on trail rides etc. The installed units are much better but it will depend on how much you use it.
