The "Drive" indicator lamp in the instrument cluster on my Second Gen TS Wagon hasn't worked since I've had the car (3 years), so decided to do something about it. I usually hate taking dashboards and trim apart, but this was really easy. Shouldn't take you any more than 40 mins first time. Made a guide whilst I was doing the job. Hope it helps.
1. Remove battery negative lead - 10mm spanner/socket.
2. Drop the steering wheel down as low as it will go on its adjuster (little lever to the lower/left of the base of the wheel.
3. Undo the two screws for the shroud around the instrument cluster. You can see from the photo, I have a phillips attachment for my ratchet, but a short phillips head screwdriver should get in fine. See pic
4. Pull the top of the shroud forward, and wiggle it out of the bottom of the dashboard. Not difficult, but it will catch on the trip reset button. A carefull wiggling will clear it, then pull the shroud out of the way. See pic
5. Undo the four screws round the edge of the instument cluster. They are the ones in each corner, set back slightly, not the two middle ones - one on either side - they hold in the heater vents. See pic
6. Now, simply pull the instrument cluster towards you squarely (so the plugs pull out), then angle it down and slip it out past the steering wheel towards the passernger side, and it'll come free from the dash. See pics

7. Turn the instrument cluster over, and you'll see the gear indicator lamp bulb holders. See pic.
8. Simply unscrew the faulty bulb holder and pull it from the back of the cluster. See pic.
Mitsubishi quoted the bulbs as $9.60 each (they're all the same). Part no. MB849560
9. Re-fitting is the reverse of dis-assembly. The plugs that plug the cluster into the dash simply slot back in as the cluster is pushed back in to the dash. There are no wires to fiddle about with, just push the cluster back in square, and they'll reconnect no probs. See pic.
10. Replace screws and job done!

Probably not wrong. Will all depend on how much mitsubishi want for a replacement? Could live without it if they want more than about 10 bucks. They wanted about $30 for one of the front washer jets. Took old one off, and soaked it in some cola for a bit - good as new.

Go wreckers, take cluster out, take bulbs out, put cluster back in...

Like your style - might have to do that - always handy to have a few spare bulbs. Headlamps, brake lights and indicater bulbs too....

Wow I had no idea it was that easy. My old laser was a bit of a problem, it wasnt too bad to pull it out, but it was a real pain to try and unclip the speedo cable because it didnt pull out very far, and after 15mins your hands are all scratched and cut up.
Never seen that kinda design before, where the whole thing just clips/plugs in. Pretty cool. Helps for when I do my blue LED conversion :P

Same for third gen except the third gen does not have the fixed plugs, you need to pull it back and then unplug. still fool proof.

Hmm. Wouldn't it be a good idea to add a section to each magna generation section purely for "How To" guides? Would save having to search many past threads to find info (if any). You could split them up into sub-sections like a gregorys manual for say, suspension, engine, brakes, routine mainenance etc etc. I do most stuff on my car myself, and would be good to share information with/from others. There have been times when I have been stuck in the middle of a job, and have had to come and spend a bit of time looking round the net trying to find info (how I found this site). You guys reckon this is a good idea? Reckon forum Admin would set this up?

Look at the sticky in this section, FAQ second gen questions, it has some links to threads that cover doing stuff to your car, maybe this thread should be in there?
