View Full Version : Changing Headlight Globes - Am I Stupid?

17-03-2004, 04:42 PM
Hi all,

Just bought a new set of Hella H7s for the low beams on my TJ Ralliart. The guy at the shop took one of the original globes out to identify that it was H7s I needed.

And that my friends is where the trouble started. He could not get the globe and its base back in and shut the little wire retainer to hold it all in place. He couldn't see what he was doing and there isn't much space for hands either.

Ultimately he gave up and I went home with good intentions of doing it myself. Lo and behold after 40 minutes, much swearing and lost skin, I was no better off.

Then I thought that if I took the other one out I would see for myself how its all supposed to go in. Well, do think I could even get the plug off the back of the headlight?? Not a hope in hell!!

So what am I missing? The owners manual makes it look dead easy. Can somebody give me some advice?

Many thanks,

Mark

Remove the headlight as a whole.... much easier with it all out..... just have to remove the bits and pieves around it and i think from memory the grill as well....

Thanks Steve,

So how do I take the headlight out?

I can't believe that you need to take the grille and both headlights out to change a couple of lousy globes. If thats the case, Mitsu's design guys need a good ass kicking.

Cheers,

Mark

you have to remove your corner blinkers before you can take the whole headlight off. Just unscrew any screws that are connected to the headlight and thats it.... (off memory, 2 screws on each side and 1 on top...)

Also forgot to add, when you take the right headlight off(battery side), you will be able to see how the connectors work regarding screwing and unscrewing.

Then with it comes to the left headlight, all you need to do is remove the windscreen washer bottle and use your hand to duck in and change the globes...

hope that helps...

How do you take the wiring connector off the back of the globe? I've been yanking on it 'til my fingers hurt and the bugger won't come loose.

It just gets worse doesn't it. Now I've got to take my indicators off too!!!!!! I can't believe it - what a stupid design. There has to be an easier way.

Thanks,

Mark

I assume your car is still under warranty if it is a Ralliart :?:

If so, take the car to a Mitsubishi service centre and they will change the bulb for free, "Under Warranty".

I discovered this when I had my VRX serviced today. I needed one park bulb and one headlight bulb (low beam). The low beam bulb is not a standard issue type (H4). I was told a replacement low beam bulb from Mitsubishi would normally cost $95 - just for one bulb :!: :!:

I remember buying a pair of Hella H4s (low beam bulb) for my old Magna for about $30 :!:

Anyways, that's my 2 cents :)

My god people.. You make it sound so much harder than it is.

Simply remove your water bottle (2 screws) and you can get your whole head behind the left side one.

For the right side. Simply remove your battery..

Talk about trying to make it as hard as possible for the guy.

The globes only fit in one way. Its piss easy.

don't take your whole head light assembly out, why would you need to do that?

the connector has a clip, just push down on one of the sides, and then you should be able to pull it out easily.

on the driver side, you should remove the washer bottle, as it will make things much much easier. on the passenager side, need to remove the Battery Cover, and only the cover. Then you will have enough room to change the bulbs without removing too much else.

Then remove the rubber dust/water seal cover and you can see the back of the bulb already.

The only thing that is holding the bulb in place is a wire clip that looks kinda like a C clip but what you do is press the left side towards the right and it will release the bulb.

Make sure you lock the new bulbs in properly, else it may fall off by it self. And make sure you don't touch the new bulb on the glass with your fingers, it could make it slightly dimmer or even damage the bulb when it gets really hot.

it's not hard, 10mins worth of work for the life time of enjoyment. (life time referring to the bulb)

I just had a similar problem with what I thought was a dead parking globe (Passenger side), couldn't remove battery cover, so decided to remove main globe so I could see where the park globe was. It came off easy, but then getting it back on. found that if the main globe is not seated properly first that clip will NEVER go back. If the globe is seated properly the clip nearly drops right in.

P.S. I got the main globe out and then found the parker working, maybe loose wire ???? reassembed and all is still ok.

I'm King when it comes to changing bulbs LOL...

Mine keeps blowing hahahahahaha

Gone through 3 pairs of Hellas in less than 3 Years heeheeheeheehee..

P.S If your hands are flexible like mine you don't need to remove the battery at all... and yes, the pin to lock the globes in are sometimes a pain to lock.. but hey.. no dramas :P :P :P :D :D :D

Thanks for all your tips guys. I got the bulbs changed with the help of a friend who had a set of curved needle nose pliers. No need to get your hand jammed right down there with those.

After all the difficulties, I was realy hoping these lights would be much better than stock, but there really isn't much difference. 50% brighter is the claim, but I just don't see it. Sure there is some improvement but not 50% thats for sure. I'd say more like 10-20% tops.

I'd be interested to see if the high beams were any better.

Thanks,

Mark

Just changed my headlight lamps and high beam lamps last week. The first one took 45 minutes to replace, teh second ... 5 minutes. To remove the clip, stick your fingers in push the clip down and to teh left, but not to o far as you'll miss the little gap thingy the clip passes through. To get it back in insert globe hold in place, push down little clip thingy, push to the left and pull to the right to help it to click in. Did it without removeing the battery or headlamp unit. Lst a fiar pit of skin, but hey it was worth it. My Narva All weathers are great as head lamps, the Narva Artic Blues are cool for highbeams.
I wouldn't call this an easy job at all. I can change my oil faster!
