View Full Version : Auto Gearbox limp mode
I have 91 TR Magna sedan.
Jump started a friends car the other day.
Now I only have 1 fwd gear and rev-not 100% sure it was directly after jump starting friend car.
Checked fuses-found "ECS" fuse was blown.
I've replaced it, and also disconnected and reconnected the battery, to no avail.
Anybody know what to look at next?

I thought ECS was for the electronic suspension in the KR veradas.

did you jump + to + and - to motor
if not the puter TCU /ecu may have fried
the TCU has gone into fail safe
so you should have third and reverse
you may be looking at replacing the tcu
check the auto oil level
then the colour (bright red )
then the fuses
if both are ok then the problem is electrical
pick up a second tcu from a wrecker and try that

Agreed it's either of the two, however limp mode is usually the TCU protecting the transmission and allowing you to get it to a mechanic, you will have to replace it.
Try the wreckers, ebay, spare part places etc dont buy brand new as you can find very good condition ones at those places
good luck

easy to check
First of all, start driving, grab the shifter and thow back a gear, does it go back? The Trans will default to 3rd gear when the TCU is blown
Second, is it clunky into reverse?
In the 91 model, you have a 3 plug TCU (few have the 2 plug but not many) good luck finding one. Troll self serve wreckers, it is located under the heater box, you need to remove the 2 side panels on the console, 8mm combo spanner and nimble fingers help lol
Do not drive it too much like it is as you will fry the clutches etc
Thanks, but...it's been at the mechanics for 2 weeks-checked all fuses etc. They tried computers from wreckers-it's had 6 different ones in it and none have worked(both comp's)-what about loose wiring etc?-maybe the jumpstarting is just a red herring????????

Been at the mechanic 2 weeks, well then get a new mechanic as they simply have NFI
Fair point,madmagna,
but I should have said "I left it with my mechanic for 2 weeks"-knowing he was flat out and I can do without for a while.
The important point is, they tried replacement computers and none worked-now either all the replacements were jiggered, or there's another problem.

Could be something simple like a solenoid died in the box.

Also dude, never jumpstart + to + and - to - in an EFI car! big no-no. Cousin did it in his brand new (1995) calais and spent 1k getting genuine TCU and ECU put back in...go + to + and _ to bolt/motor/other piece of stell on the other car...

Yeah for sure, just not worth the risk.
Just adding my 2c worth. When the TCU dies. You wont be able to put it into gear at all. It happened to me in the middle of nowhere. Started smelling smoke. Pulled over on Pt wakefield Rd. Stopped the car and the smell disappeared. Started it again and then as soon as I put it into gear, the engine konks out.
The box going into failsafe mode usually means there's some mechanical fault. Could be the solenoids got shot or the diff is starting to go. My old diff was on the way out and once or twice a day, the car will jolt into failsafe mode while driving. I had the precursor to this, in that everytime I put it into reverse from a cold start, there will be a massive jolt.
Also, as mentioned in a previous post. The alternator can also stuff up the TCU into tricking it into going into failsafe mode which is also what happened to my old KS.

Burnt/missing TCU gives you 3rd and reverse, trust me I have seen it many a time and also drove my Verada like that for a few weeks when mine died.
Nothing wrong with jumpstarting so long as you have surge proof leads

? auto gearbox
Might it be worth taking it to an auto trans specialist?
Also still not sure if the broken fuse is related-My Jumper leads are supposed to be ok for latest cars("600amp Heavy duty computer safe...")
