View Full Version : Installing single din Head Unit into a TJ
Hi everyone,
Got an Alpine CDE9852 from Perry on here, all that needs doing now is installing before i drive up to hawks nest in a couple of weeks!
Its got a brand new loom, but i guess will need soldering onto existing Magna standard headunit wiring, or by means of a harness?
Im not really game enough to pull apart the dash, too concerned about breaking something. So that also rules out Strathfield/JB HiFi etc etc lol
Is anyone in Sydney willing to part with some weekend time for a slab of the beer of your choice?
OR, any reccomended audio installers in the sydney area?
Hope someone can help!

I'd recommend buying a wiring harness so you don't have to cut into your wires. Makes hooking it up easier, and returning it to stock later a cinch.
something like this:
EDIT: no ebay links

yes, something like that.
seriously, try it yourself. there's a guide on how to remove the console. it's a 10 minute job, tops.
cheers,

EDIT: linky (http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/mitsu/console/stereoremoval.htm) for 3rd gen console removal
oops sorry about the ebay link, long day. So if i get that wiring harness, how do i connect it to the Alpine wiring loom? There are multiple wires with no attachment, and then 4 plastic plugged wires labelled 'ILLM', 'REMO' (Remote?), 'P-ANT' (power antenna?) and 'IN INT', oh and a metal lobster claw thing

you splice the new harness to the harness of the head unit. you have to match the new head unit wiring to what's coming out of the new harness (and it should include a guide). if it doesn't include a guide, you can get the wiring diagrams in the workshop manual (dl from http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3) and match the existing wiring to the new harness.
it might sound daunting, but it's pretty straight forward. I'm an electronic nub and I was able to fully install my sat-nav/dvd player using the workshop manual and a harness.
ILLM will be illumination (probably to come on when the headlights are on)
REMO will be remote (did your head unit come with one as an option?)
P-ANT is the power antenna
IN INT ??? no idea
all of these should be in the head unit manual. if not, search for them online.
cheers,

good on you wook, might well give it a go now!

What wookiee said, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing before I ripped apart my dash to install my car PC. The workshop manual is gold, as was the 3rd gen console removal. Seems a lot harder than it actually is. Besides, it's fun seeing your car like this :P

Funnier when people see it and ask "WTF happened to your car?"
I got my harness off eBay, spliced it together with the wires I needed and badda bing badda boom easy install, and very easy to restore my car to stock when the time comes.
Where abouts in Sydney are you mate?
EDIT: This is the harness I bought

When I did my headunit, I bought a Magna -> ISO adapter, than an ISO -> Pioneer adapter. It all just plugs in. The only soldering I had to do was to solder a ground wire on, but that's easy, as you can do it outside of the car, and it's the only lead not connected to anything :P
Both my adapters were from Aerpro, so your local Autobarn should be able to order them in.
Mitchell that still a scary pic to me lol
Just seen the harness u bought on ebay for $16. I am in Marrickville, inner west. On the weekend i am in pennant hills which is near castle hill
thanks valdez, i shall get down to autobarn and have a snoop :)
Just purchased the magna wiring harness off ebay. Hopefully this will help heaps with the installation.
This may be a dumb question, how do i splice the wires together
cut back a bit of the plastic layer around the existing wire, twist your new wire around the now exposed metal, solder them together, and tape/heat shrink tape them up! you now have 2 paths that 1 wire can travel :)
sweet, sounds too easy. I am a gun at wiring up CAT5 to RJ45 plugs by hand so this should be a doddle. Gonna get myself a soldering iron on the weekend

The smaller the better, you don't need a 40w job, it'll just make things trickier. =)
