well after many hours of bitching about my verada's fuel economy (usually around the 15.1L/100km) i fitted a new 'ebay' spec o2 sensor

ACA OX204 equivelant

the brand is 'hi-flow' it was $60 + a few $ ship (like $4 i think.) basically i just cut the old plug off, connected up the wires (they are the corrosponding colours) and threw her in..

it's only eary days at the moment.. but she has already dropped to low 11's on the 'avg' on the trip computer..

keeping in mind that i very rarely do any motorway km's it's all driving around the burbs and stop start stuff...

and next week my modified pacemakers go on.. and i'm also going to either ditch the pod filter in favour of the stock box... or duct and section off an air intake for the pod.. hopefully that will get things closer to normal...

Not at all suprising - the 3rd gens use a LOT of fuel trim from the O2 sensor compared to other vehicles...

cheers for your help.. i bought that sensor on your recommendation :)

legend.. if it continues.. i shall be saving $20 a week! A WEEK!! thats extra i get to pay interest on the home loan!! awsome!! :(

That's a big difference in regards to fuel economy. I wonder if i should change my o2 sensor as i'm currently averaging 14L/100km and about 40% of my driving is freeway.

Hmmm - I think I should do this too - my weekly fuel average is 16.2L/100km  on a AWD Sports doing 1 hour of driving at avg speed of 30km/h (estimated) per day.

Does anyone know how much an original O2 sensor would cost from Mitsubishi?

And - Matty.c - how many kms has your car done?

damn you guys are sucking the fuel!!! I get low 11s at peak hour stop start traffic and mid to high 10s on a decent city run. Drops into the 9s on a country run.

For the price you paid, that's a good return. Something to try I think.

Make sure you tyres are also properly inflated. i was getting around 14-15L/100 coz all my tyres were around 28psi... pumped em up to around 34psi and im getting readings closer to the 13.0L/100 mark

Does anyone know how much an original O2 sensor would cost from Mitsubishi?

Had mine done at the start of the year, it was $260 plus fitting.

The mechanic said that the O2 sensor was on the way out (2001 TJ with 105,000km), but wasn't completely gone. For the first few kms of a trip, it was a bit out, but it was fine once you got going. So I noticed basically no difference in fuel economy :(. The trip meter was still getting ~9.5l/100km on highways/motorways.

However.... I recently tried some injector cleaner. I forget the brand, but I still have the bottle in the car. $10 from Big W. I whacked some in before my recent trip home. According to the trip meter, average fuel consumption dropped to 7.7l/100km! It was a 550km drive home, so I saved $15 worth of petrol - it paid itself off in no time :P

Fuel consumption back here at home seems to have declined too. Its not a busy city, but around town I've averaged 11l/100km for the last 40km or so, which is pretty good considering my old highway average. I want to wait for my trip back to Brisbane before jumping to a solid conclusion, but so far so good. Like I said, it's only $10 for a bottle, so it's well worth a shot.

Just a quick question.

Other than fuel economy, how would you know if your o2 sensor is on its way out or gone?

My cars average round the 14 in city driving but have alwyas done that since new, but saying that, they both get down to the 7's on a country holiday trip.

yeh genuine they are rediculously priced.. even ebay you can get genuine ones with the plug etc etc ready to go straight in for around $100ish..

but i chose the $60 one cos i'm not scared to use a soldering iron :)

the KJ has done 175'..

the TH which i gave the old man.. returns single didgits (70% highway) has 220' on it.. and is on the original sensor..

seems to me that all the little silly problems occur in the 'J' series (TJ/KJ)

also.. as silly as it may sound.. i've noticed the exhaust is a fair bit more quieter at cruise with the new oxy sensor..

oxygen sensors should be replaced every 100k

I don't think you can post ebay links here (has to be in ebay thread?) - but if you type oxygen sensor in ebay, I presume the $60 one is the one he got...

Hi,
I'm holding right now the $60 HIFLO O2 sensor,
it has 4 wires, can any tell me the pinouts of this thing (stupid question:redface: ) Thanks:D

Heh, I gues I'm lucky. 243,xxx on the original sensor. 9L/100km combined highway/city peak-hour

Just cut the plug from your stock O2 sensor (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showpost.php?p=513038&postcount=12) and re-use it after soldering the new sensor onto it.

my car is realy really quite weird on fuel.

100% city driving i get 10/100
100% country driving i get 10/100
driving with a trailer i get 10/100
giving it stick everywhere i get 10/100...

maybe i should check the O2 sensor voltages, it might be dead and i might be entitled to 8/100 or something ridiculous.

If you car was getting readings like mine when we hooked up the diag to it, then it shouldn't be the o2 sensor causing an issue. Probably the supercharger lol

Other than fuel economy, how would you know if your o2 sensor is on its way out or gone.
If you have access to a diag machine of sorts, whether that be a proper mechanics spec one or just one like what mohit had in his car, you can get a chart reading of the o2 sensor in real time. The o2 sensor should pulse between 0.1 and 0.9 in normal operation. If its reading outside of these values at all, it should be replaced.

That said, mine gets the readings its supposed to but it wouldn't surprise me if its contributing to my current fuel issues along with the exhaust.

matty.c, were your xx.xL/100km figures high on the highway/freeway as well, or did the avg appear normal once you got up and cruising?

yeah mines like that as well, but that being said i need a retune and a new fuel pump as well.

don't know.. i never really do any freeway driving.. they did drop a bit.. but never ever in single digits..

now she is sitting on low 13's.. babying around the suburbs, and i'm always the slowest person to accellerate off the lights.. i cannot get it any lower than 13.0L/100km...

on the weekend i pulled off the MAF and contact cleanered it's guts like i've done with many a modified nissans.. and recharged the K&N using a poffteenth of filter oil, pretty much as least as possible.. over the next week i'll see if that makes any improvments.. but as it stands.. the fuel useage is forcing me to seriously consider selling it's getting beyond the joke getting only 420km's to a full tank that is now just over $100 to fill...

another way to find out whether ur cars o2 sensor is gone is that ur exhaust will smell really rich, apparently replacing the o2 sensor could give up to 30% of fuel efficiency back

how many 02 sensors do u guys have to replace? coz my car i have to replace 2 of them and they're in pretty awkward positions under the car... if i bought the 02 sensors from ford i'll be paying an arm and a leg for just one! $600 odd, although now i think it might've been a kit with the two...

You know if you don't really do any highway/freeway thats probably about right. Thats what I used to get when I did 50/50 city/highway. I'd imagine it'd return 10-11 if you did a bit of highway driving too.

See atm I'm getting 16's avg on a tank (don't ask), but if I do a bit of extra freeway driving, it quickly drops that avg down to mid 13's. I'm expecting when I get everything fixed up to see my avg around down from 16 to 13ish and around the 10 mark when I do those extra highway runs.

What is the diagnostic kit that Mohit has? My exhaust does smell rather rich - i.e. it smells like someone opened up a LPG cannister - and I don't run on LPG!

So I think it is time for me to change the oxygen sensor. Is it difficult to access?

BTW Lugo, I just put my car in at Miller St Panels this morning - I mentioned that you recommended him and he remembered your granddad's blue Corolla :)

i definitly know the sensor is making a difference.. i've even noticed the exhaust note a little less droney.. the same sorta difference like Barry's fuel rail kit makes.

yeah i get around 15-22L/100 around city too ... which is bad.

thought it might be the 02 sensor, but we plugged in a proper snap-on obd reader...and it sed the 02 sensor was working fine.

hwy is fine. (8-9/100)

i think a major factor is me not really driving at 60km/h (so it goes into 4th)

on a flat rd the difference in 'instant' on the trip meter is like 5L/100km from 59km/h in 3rd and 60km/h in 4th..

i wish i could pick 4th at like 53km/h..

(my speedo reads slower than what i'm actually doing cos of the 20's.. )
