View Full Version : Even bigger intake????
Blue 380

A lot of us on here have gone for the bigger 90mm intake & have been happy with the results. However when you consider it, we havent really put a bigger intake on the car, we have just fitted the one which was designed for that motor. This has got me thinking.....what if someone was to go bigger again, similar to the one in the attachment which is for an XR8.
Now considering they dont make them for 380's, someone would have to get one made up which would be difficult but not impossible but they seem very popular with Falcons & Commodores so why not a 380?? I realise there would be warranty implications but no more than straight thru mufflers, extractors etc. What do you think, would any possible gains be worth the hassle/cost?

I often wondered about that SS mob (the label on the intake in Blue380's attachment) which make those large intake snorkel-things for Commodores and Falcons. I assume they don't make one for 380? Do they have a website?

I guess not. Just had a look... Holden and Ford only.
Fired off an email anyway...

Edit: Sorry, I posted there was a CAI by Injen, it isn't, it's by Fujita.
You need to order the CAI kit for a Eclipse GT (6G75) but need to make sure it's for the auto or it won't be long enough.
Discussion on this bolt-up CAI option is discussed here:

Here it is:
Hi David
Unfortunately we don't have anything to suit your model. I'm not familiar with the engine bay etc of the 380 but everything we make is model-specific so highly doubtful that anything would fit.
Sorry we can't be more help.

So, in a word, no.

....I know the 380 engines run the other way but surely somebody could do a home manufacture of something similar to this. There was a lot of development work go into the OTR's for the LS2 before they got it right but it started in a back shed somewhere.
BTW, great improvements with this OTR since I've had it put on, both with induction sound and performance :D
Cheers.

what they could have said was... No sorry weCURRENTLY dont make anythin to suit your model, BUT if you would to bring your car down we can gladly start the process of catering for these models..... blah blah blah!
thats what i would have said... maybe i need to go into fibreglassing? make up some dummy CAI/filter boxes OTR thingy magiggies.... how many people would be interested?

Yeah, cutting off the possibilities like that was a bit rough, but of course there's no that many 380s on the road in the first place (compared to Commodores & Falcons, even Camrys, etc) - and then even less of a market for performance bits. And now that the 380 is dead, I doubt anyone would bother making anything for it.
I reckon they could take the Holden one (as shown in the link to Blue380's first post here) as a template, and then change/reshape it where needed. That would be cheaper than making it from scratch - but what do I know...
Otherwise you can do it yourself like the other guy here did, with a home-made second intake/tube feeding into lower-front of airbox - but personally I don't want to cut my airbox.
As for your ponderings of fibreglassing, sorry I have no expertise there - but I'm sure a lot of people here would be interested depending on what you are able to come up with.

I reckon the best thing would be like a BA/BF Typhoon intake, normal snorkel over the raidator and a sencond intake behind the head light. I have plenty of mates with N/A who have put this mod on there cars, better fuel econonmy, more power dyno proven and better 400m times.
Having a good look at knotched car I reckon the biggest gain would be strapping a big ass TB like a LS1, LS2, LS3 one (****ing huge!!!) and modding the intake manifold and fitting an aftermarket computer to compensate and to get rid of the AFM. Aftermarket intake piping to a K&N pod eclosed in a custom box with properly positioned intakes.
