Know this could probably go in the audio section, but does anyone know of any cheap uprated front speakers that fit the second gen TS?

I had a front speaker blow a while back, and it seems that the second gen has special shallow speakers in the front, due to limited space. Got a replacement from a wreckers, but it cost me $15 (for one second hand speaker). Seems excessive when you can buy an uprated pair of speakers (not shallow) for about $30. Apparantly Clarion do uprated shallow speakers (or so I'm told), but they are rather expensive. Anyone know of any cheap ones for the second gen?

Any 4" speaker will fit in the dash, you just need to cut the plastic base out of the speaker mounts. Easy to do.

Get verada door pods... i threw 6x4's in there along with 6x9's in the back... Magnas throw out nice sound with doors + rears.. Or Throw in fronts... doors and rears.. and amp = sexy time.

You can buy your average 4" speaker if you're prepared to do some cutting to the plastic underneath the speaker hole. Other than that unless you wanna spend excessive amounts of money you're outta luck. (trust me i spent a hell of a lot of time and petrol searching all around perth and all over the net)
But yeah, if you cut away some of the plastic underneath it most 4" will fit, might need a small spacer for some of them but it works. Just see if you can measure out your specs for the car and for different speakers to check they'll fit.
All the best

i've currently got 4" alpine speakers in the dash, they do the job and are much better than the stockies but still no match for some real sound in the doors. I'm getting some verada door pods sent to me as we speak and putting some 6" in the front doors too, i'm told it makes a massive difference.

I'll soon have a set of door pods that I'm looking to install, will I need to transfer the whole door skin or can the door pods be separated from the door skins?

Why would you put 6x4s  in the door pods when you could just put 6s in them?

In my TS, I'm hoping to get some high end in the dash, and a paid of 6 inches in the doors. Do you reckon it would be better to get the door pods, or to just have someone cut the hole in the doors and install the speakers that way?

Has anyone got any pics of the door pods installed in a TS or similar?

Not me, but its easy to put them in the door.
Once you take the door trim off you will see the hole in the metal big enough for a 6.5" speaker, just line it up by eye and start by poking a small hole and working your up until the speaker sits flush

If you screw it up, door cards are only like $15 from the wreckers anyway.

Megavox do make a direct replacement, but they're relatively rare and they barely sound any better than the factory ones.

That's a pretty clear shot of mine when I was replacing the fronts. If I've got any of the shelf cut I'll post a link, but I'm not sure if I do, all my photos are backed up on another computer atm.

But yeah like a few have said, cut the shelf out as best you can, as close to each edge as possible, then the majority of 4" speakers will fit (iirc anything thats not deeper than 44mm). My only suggestion is use a really sharp fresh blade, took me 7 hours to do one side with a pretty much blunt blade cause i cbf going to the shops that day, then 15 minutes to do the other side with a new blade. Worth the couple of bucks if you do it.

Nice one, I might look into that.. just got my sub in the back, and it sounds sweet even just with the 4's in the front and 6x9's in the back. Might not worry too much about it just yet, but it will definitely be something to keep on my list.... Got too many plans for the car now, and too little cash...
