How do you tell if the factory muffler (2000 KJ) is on its way out?

That's what my mechanic said, because he reckons you can hear stuff rolling around inside the muffler, when you give it a bit of shake.

Also, if he holds the revs at 3000-3500rpm in neutral then releases the throttle, the muffler seems to "backfire" (well it makes these spluttering noises) as the revs come down.

N.B. Totally stock exhaust system, all original.

If I need a new muffler, I might as well get the Lukey LR2779 aka Sports/VRX muffler while I'm at it. Does anyone know where in Brisbane/southside would do a good job?

Thanks
Justin

That's exactly what my car is doing at the moment. Has a lovely crack in the pipe. You've probably got a crack or a hole somewhere in the exhaust, best way to check is to look at it.

Justin, I have used Rightprice Exhausts on moss st several times,( 1 x 380, 1 x Nubira, and 1 x TR 4pot wagon) and the guys are good clean and reasonably priced, I'm getting one (LR-2779 on the TW) done there very soon so perhaps we have a bargaining chip getting 2....

I was going to get a Lukey Muffler LR-2779 ( pretty much an aftermarket VR exhaust )and the pipe replaced from the cat back. But it seems the exhaust is OK on 3rd Gens, so the $360.00 they quoted for that job won't apply.

I haven't got a price on the Muffler only supply and install yet, but I'll prolly get a S/S tip as well.

And heres the sound it makes

And here's a pretty simple pic of the restricted standard muffler compared to a straight through like the Lukey Race LR2779

I ran the sound through the HiFi and the Mrs was really grinning when she said is that what my car will like.....

Anyone else give us an idea of what a good price is on supply and fit.

I know it says TJ there, but I'm assuming one of these would bolt straight onto a 3L TE aswell right?.

I had one on a 4 pot TR wagon, and that sounded real good, not loud but deep and a bit o growl. I don't think the fit the 380 tho, we did try.

I dont know about bolt on, quite possibly. But it will go on.

Gave the muffler a good shake today.

Can hear a LOT of shaking noise coming from inside.

Sounds like there's a whole heap of sand inside. Obviously the internals have corroded away

Many thanks to Marty (SH00T) for helping to organise a LR2779 replacement muffler, going on tomorrow :)

Perhaps we could do mine first. If it too loud you can have my old muffler. Or I bring it home and give it away on here.
