View Full Version : DIY: Bluetooth Install in 380 (also how to remove headunit)

OK, with Greg's help (ie: he did the work, I took photos, swore at cable ties and drank coffee) my bluetooth kit has been installed.

Here's a DIY with photos for you to try at home, also helps with anyone who wants to pull the dash apart, as it really IS very easy on the 380's, much easier than either of us were expecting!

OK, firstly, the unit we are using is a Sony Ericsson HCB-300. They're discontinued, but you can still pick em up on eBay pretty cheap.

OK, first, remove the knobs for the climate control, and lift the faceplate off. There are three clips up either side, evenly spaced. Best bet to start lifting from the bottom in each corner.
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3218.jpg
You may need to use a screwdriver with some electrical tape or similar for the stiff upper clips
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3219.jpg

After, it should look like this:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3220.jpg

Unclip the climate control:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3221.jpg

Remove the four screws circled in red, two each side:

And Then

Headunit should just slide out:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3226.jpg

Isolate the constant power and the ignition sensor wire (in this case red is constant and blue ignition, but CHECK on yours!):
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3227.jpg

Strip, join and solder the appropriate wires:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3230.jpg

Tape over the join:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3231.jpg

Now, to earth the unit, you need to attach the earth wire to the nearest convenient earth point. Funnily enough, we found a bolt that seems to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in my model 380. It was the right size for the red terminal we had, so just put a nut on and it works a treat:

Removing the lower cover for the dash under the steering wheel is simple. Undo the three screws along the bottom and then just ease off the clips that hold the top on. Start on one side and work across for best results.

We mounted the bluetooth receiver unit behind the headunit, under the loom there as it was nice and snug and secure, with little chance of rattling:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3235.jpg

Run the microphone wire up the pillar on driver's side. The cover just pulls off with a little encouragement:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3236.jpg

The thin single wire is the microphone wire, this is where we ran it down under the dash:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3237.jpg

Mount the speaker somewhere that will allow the sound to be broadcast clearly, yet will conceal the speaker. Also make sure it is somewhere the speaker will be mounted securely with no rattles (foam helps with this). We used the guard bracket on the steering shaft:
http://i355.photobucket.com/albums/r473/sidewinder0042/100_3238.jpg

Find somewhere to mount the controller unit and run the cable through the nearest gap to get it under the dash.

Run all the cables through to the unit and plug them in:

Put everything back together in the reverse order to which you took it apart.

The end result should be relatively seamless and look like it BELONGS installed in your car:

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Why did you take out the Head unit and use those wires ??
Looking ar something like this myself. The original Bluetooth on Ebay was a little expensive at $300.00

I bought two of them, one for mine, one for lancer. All up $160 delivered, the HCB-300 was $300 in retail stores when still available.

We used the power wires to the headunit. Were also looking for where to put the mute cable, but the stock headunit doesn't support it.

Hi gents, nice work with the install nice and clean. Good news is it can be improved and integrated into the sound system via the audio interupt line! So it will work similar to the factory bluetooth kit.

Ok here you go, if you take the clip on the right hand side of you head unit, this is the one that talks to the dash screen and bluetooth etc. their is a single wire on mine it was blue and in the 5 pin position on the plug. if you hook up your audio interupt if the kit you bought has one when you answer a call the audio system will mute automatically.

I hope this helps, any questions let me know, can provide more circuit diagram to help if you don't have a service manual. I used my factory kit to integrate with the a/m alpine head unit works a treat.

i used to install he factory bluetooth systems @ a dealer u should find you wont need to remove the a.c buttons etc and pull the radio facia (the silver bit ) from the bottom outwards u may need to use A LITTLE bit of force but it usually come out quite smoothly.other than that nice job looks good and prob cheaper than factory system!!

GT basically got everything standard (except SatNav I think). I think the LX got it, but the VRXs did not - though it may be optional. Luckily mine came with it as a package. Very handy for when your mobile rings but is buried in a bag somewhere.

Na...LX's didnt get it - at least not the series 1 - it was an option pretty much across the range except for GT and Platinum

Not too sure, but i think maybe series 3 SX & VRX got it too.....

thanks for all that though sidey, i was hoping someone would post a guide like this so i dont break stuff when i go to pull it all out....:)

now if only someone would point out the locations of the clips and crap that holds the center console in!:D

Sorry to correct you ribec, but LX does have it..... as I can attest by owning one!

LX has everything the GT has except the following:

- different wheel style
- dusk sensing headlights
- GT kit
- clear tailights
- wing ??

not sure on the wing as mine is factory?

I could be wrong here, but I don't think I am

CHEERS!!

We couldn't find the mute cable listed in the circuit diagrams (couldn't even find reference to factory bluetooth kit!!).

Will have to crack it open and hook it up, as the sony ericsson kit has a mute wire.

I have the Parrot 300K aftermarket in my VRX (see attachement) and it mutes the audio system (radio/iPod interface and CD) automatically. It was fitted by my lease company instead of the factory unit which was good because it has voice activated dial and announced menus when you are stuck in traffic. The VRX LCD display shows Phone when a call is coming in as well.

Cost $275 fitted at the time of delivery. I traced the install when fitting the iPod interface and everything is almost exactly the same as the install shown here. The only hassle is they tapped the radio power harness wire for the unit power on the BT kit so I have to jump across to the radio to power it up but it is a minor inconvenience. It stays on once you switch to another input.

Point to note for those that care - the iPod interface works with everything up to and including the current iPod Touch but it does not work with the iPod side of the newly released iPhone 3G. You get an error on the LCD which relates to a power issue in the interface instructions. The iPhone 3G says the accessory is not compatible with the recharge function of the accessory. I'll have to fiddle with the DIP switches on the unit one day to see if it fixes the problem. Still using the old iPod for now...

Hoon,

I posted this some time back in this thread:

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43809

It is the Mitsubishi made iPod interface which fits all Mitsu Japan built head units. The 5 pin DIN connector on the back of the head unit accepts the interface cable. Works a treat with all iPods except the iPhone. Fitted in minutes but I had to fiddle a bit with the DIP settings but it all works fine...

Yep, the factory BT is a Parrot unit with the basics but a good unit. If you need any info on the iPod adapter let me know but it's pretty simple to install. Set the DIP pack the same as I noted in the other thread and you should be good to go...

Nah, haven't had a chance to crack it open and **** around with it yet.

Been too busy trying to sort out the kit we installed into the missus' CH Lancer, reckon a plug has come out, but the unit fell down into a tight gap behind the headunit and we can't reach in there to get it out without removing most of the dash area! LOL

For those with the b/t kit pre-installed - when you turn the ignition off do you get the confirmation chirp (beep to indicate phone disconnect) then a loud *thud* as the power cuts out?

It irritates the hell out of me as it's something you try to avoid in your own home theatre system. Now it seems the speaker has taken its toll - low bass sounds make it seem like the speaker's all torn up.

I'm about to speak to the dealer about this to get a warranty replacement for my speaker, but if anyone can back me up here it would be great.

Does anyone have the bluetooth option fitted to the single MP3 factory unit?
or
Is the factory bluetooth option dependant on the display above the center aircon vents?

I want it bit I only have the single CD with no display...

Foozrcool
11-09-2008, 11:29 AM
I just installed mine recently, all the display does is say phone when you're on the phone so I don't think that would matter.

I'd also imagine that the harness on the back of the head unit would be the same & the kit goes in series with the existing harness & uses your passenger speakers for audio. The 6 cd stacker plugs into the headunit via a din connector so it should be exactly the same as the 6 cd stacker head units.

There is only one 380 bluetooth kit & it doesn't stipulate specific models for use.

Yes I have factory fitted bluetooth with the single disc cd player without that centre display screen. So the bluetooth is not dependant on that screen (certainly not with my model). Dunno if that screen actually displays anything when the phone rings... on mine, the cd player panel shows "PHONE" when phone is ringing and the volume drops.
So to answer your query, you can have bluetooth without that centre-mount display; your cd player will suffice. Go for it!

Marty,
I have purchased the same Sony kit as sidewinder and the link below is another on ebay $20 at the moment. It can be set up to mute the radio when calling (finding that wire at the moment). Just users seperate speaker not car ones but there is an option for this in the instructions but have not looked into that.

Have seen these work b/4 and seem to work well
i would rather pay under $100.00 rather thn the $500.00 for mitshi one

Sidewinder thanks for the post as it made it that little bit easier not that it was hard to install anyway. (power, ignition and earth wire) Mine, wifes and daughters mobiles are paired to it and we all have a differant colour so who ever drives it can use it.
Just could not find the mute wire on the car side of the wiring harness so if anyone can help that would be great.

Answering another of your posts - I have the aftermarket Parrot system with LCD display and voice recognition. The Parrot CK3100 is the one I have but I don't know if it has been superseded. It works with the stereo system and the iPhone when used in conjunction with the iPod interface you asked about in another thread. Unlike other iPod interfaces, the Mitsu one allows full control of the phone for calling, and application use even when playing music in the iPod side. Many others lock the phone when the iPod is playing music and you can't use it. Cheers...

1) The updated version of the HCB-300 is the HCB-400 right, i can not find any information on a HCB-380 (Please Confirm)
2) Regarding the Mute issues, it seems you need to get a cable kit called a HCE-26 Stereo Mute Cable only found 1 supplier so far and got the information that this lead its compatible with the HCB-400 from:

First post, and I'm doing a lazarus here (reviving a thread from a few years ago), but just wanted to say thanks to sidewinder for these instructions - just got my 380 3 days ago, and will use this to install my samsung bluetooth kit.
