Odds are you've flicked the switch on the boot lock from Free to Lock. If its on Lock only a master key can open it directly, its a security thing, lock the boot and you can't open it when its being valet parked or whatever. Just open the boot and check the switch on the latch itself.

its on the inside of the boot lock itself. There will be a sticker saying lock/free and a tab sticking out from behind that. Set it to lock.

6sik6, either that, or your release motor isnt working.

Both your cars should. Wasn't on the TL afaik, but TE-TJ had it.

You are pushing the button twice fairly promptly one after the other aren't you? I don't think they trigger on a single press.

I'm pretty sure the TJs had it. It happened to my dad once.

With mine, you lock the glove box and only give the valet the slave key to start, lock and
unlock the car.

Yep, TJ's have that function. Easy fix if you follow the above.

6sik6trimming did you fix it?

Just curious, can you open a fuel filler door?

Yeah TJ's definitely have it, only model I'm pretty sure doesn't is the later TL/TW's.

Otherwise being an electric release I suppose you could have blown a fuse? My boot release is mechanical so I wouldn't know where to look for that.

Does the cord inside the ski hole open it?

ski hole????????
Don't know if the wagons have it, but the sedans have the hatch in the rear seat to the boot, and behind that inside the boot within reach from the cabin there is a cable release to open it. As said though I don't think the wagons would have that, the seats fold down don't they?

Don't know why I keep thinking its a wagon. Yeah its a manual release, pretty much does what turning the key will do. Physically makes it turn. Sounds like you've got a problem with the electrics if the key opens it and the boot lock isn't engaged. But first things first, check that switch!

Alright. Now the obvious is out of the way, check your fuses, its operated electronically on the same circuit whether you push the button or use the remote, so go through all your fuses, if you find any blown ones replace them. Sorry I can't be more specific as to which one.

Grab a multimeter and see if you have power when the button is pressed from inside the car.

As stated above, check the fuse and also check the connector inside the boot on the RHS side from memory under the parcel shelf, these sometimes come apart

does it still make the noise?

if so, its the cable. tried replacing mine and what a nightmare, cable's slack was about 2 inches too short. just ask HOT20L about it lol.

ended up going to the wreckers and buying the motor and cable still altogether for $55. if i did that in the first place, would have saved $70 odd as at first mitsu gave me the wrong cable, then the right cable didnt fit either.
