My TJ II has just started to make a shocking noise. It almost could be a loose belt although they seem tight. It is there under acceleration the whole time but when i put it into neutral and rev it, you can only hear it through a certain rev range. It is there constantly under normal driving conditions and is starting to annoy me as it is quite loud. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

sounds like it could be a number of things, if you aren't sure of what it is it's probably best to gently drive it down to your local mechanic and have it looked at. Chances are it's something easy and cheap causing the problem.

have you tried running it with bonnet open? Where does the sound originate from?

It appears to sound like either the inlet manifold area or the drivers side somewhere.
It is really concerning

drivers side would be the cam/aux belt region. Get it looked at ASAP. Maybe worn bearing on a pump or pulley?

well i just had my power steering belt tensioner replaced as it was making a horrible noise.
can you here it in the low revs. chuck it into drive with the handbrake on, i found its more noticeble when the engines dead cold and in drive. and while your cars running just try and locate what area the noise is coming from. if it is from under the covers around the belts, its could be multiple things.

let us know how you go.
magnas are known for making lots of random noises.

Well i took it down to my mechanic today and he too thought it was the PS tensioner until he sprayed it and it didnt stop it. MMMMMMMMM Further investigation showed that there is some area on the rear exhaust monifold that is cracked. Getting it fixed next week. Has anyone else had similar problems?? Thanks to all ho have suggested the cause.

These have a sealed bearing, you can spray it as much as you want and it will not shut up if the bearing is dry.

There could be a few things, does it sound like a mini supercharger :)

Power steer idler pully is one, these are about 40 bucks to buy after market just make sure that it comes with the sleve or it will nto go on.

Could be the timing belt idlers as well, if so GET IT FIXED can also be water pump bearings

You can locate the noise if external by using a long screw driver and CAREFULLY putting it on the bracket, rest your ear against it, you will hear the noise loudest on the bracket from the offending part if that makes sense lol
