Ok, don't laugh at this, I don't know much about cars you creeps of the night but does the exhaust tip make any difference to the sound???

A mate of mine bought a little 4wd Sportage some years ago and either had a new exhaust put on (or at least the tip) and the car sounds much more aggressive?

I am guessing that you need to change the entire exhaust? Yes?

different muffler would change the sound, but i doubt the tip could.

It's more the muffler (the bit just before the tip) that changes the tome of the sound. Without a muffler, the car sounds very sporty (like a motor bike almost). Standard mufflers quieten this at the expense of putting back pressure on exhaust gases and hence decrease the power. Sport mufflers are less restrictive but are also louder.

The tip is fixed onto the muffler and generally does not affect the sound.

Thanks, thats very helpful.

Can the muffler enhance petrol/gas efficiency? Does it make the car any more efficient in any other ways apart from power?

What would be the increase in power from a sports muffler on a standard TL and would it be noticeable?

I reckon the tip would affect the sound to some extent...

eg. If the tip diameter is smaller than the exhaust or muffler's diameter you would get restriction of the gasses coming out and so a different (higher pitched?) sound.

But I doubt putting a huge tip on a stock muffler would make any difference.

well i only have a tip on atm, and it makes no difference :P

im also a tad clueless bout this but what about the big chunky exhaust tips...

the one that have the bulge in the middle.. .doesn't look as big as the muffler, but i'm assuming it is, do they make much difference to performance/sound? i saw a universal one advertised at supercheap or autobarn or something for $50 a month or so back but didn;t get it cos i didnt know lol

putting a sports muffler on a standard TH 3.5 should net about 8kW?

I think I feel somewhat depressed after doing that

i doubt that putting just a sports muffler would give a power increase like that... possibly an exhaust system from the cat (including the cat) would give a power increase close to 10-15% increase

EDIT: but then again i could be wrong.. though i'm pretty sure that just adding/installing a sports muffler wont give a power increase of 8kw

standard mufflers are VERY restrictive, tri-flow design. Fitting a sports/Lukey LR2779 or equiv is a straight through muffler that helps the engine breathe much better at top end

haha and so you should :bowrofl:

i guess it varies from car to car... coz with my car i kno that i wont get much of a power increase with a sports muffler, i'd have to put a full system (including headers) to get some decent power increases with an exhaust mod

its a magna thing on the 6G74 engine. Base spec models got the highly restrictive poopy muffler

yeah 8kw sounds around right if you slap a lukey box on a pre TJ S2 pov spec models, when i did mine the car completely changed, revved a lot smoother, pulled harder and got aroun d 0.5l-1.0l better economy per 100

8kw is the difference between the tj exec and the tj vrx/sports. The only change was the rear muffler. Shows how restrictive it is. I think about 17nm is the torque difference.

The sports muffler gives an increase of 8 killer wasps and 17 Nm of talk.

You're correct. My dad recently had a new custom-made exhaust put on his VE SS Commodore. The guy who did it had experimented with a whole bunch of exhausts, trying to find one that didn't drone much (droning's a major problem on the SSes). In the end, he made his own custom mufflers (and cut the resonator out ;)).

To cut back on his drone, each of his mufflers only has a single tip - they're actually twin-tipped from stock, so now it looks like a SV6. But he commented that several customers asked for the twin tips, and they droned noticably more than the single-tipped versions.

Like you say tho, a new tip isn't going to do anything on a stock muffler.

That is because of the interference caused by the split into two tips.

You will gain 8kW and 1nm of torque from just a muffler.

KE/KF/KH/TH 3.5 - 147kW + 300nm

TJ Series 1 Exec 3.5 (pre-august 2001) - 150kw + 300nm (cam revision)

TJ Series 2 Exec - 155kW + 316nm (Revised computer tune)

TJ Sports/VRX - 163kW + 317nm (tune and exhaust)

was the series 1 exec ever manufactured in 2002?

Is there a muffler out there that will give the same gains as a LR2779, but not be quite as loud?

Dave

AFAIK, LR2779 is not that loud. Standard Sports/VR-X muffler should fit your bill though

Cheers, getting it fitted tomorrow. I asked the guy at the exhaust shop where I've had 3 prior cars done. A TR wagon, a 380 and a nubira. They said thats about the quietest. And thats the one I wanted. I'm getting it done with a another AMC'r, though he is a bit quiter than me. It should be good for him too, he drives in a more miserly fashion.
