thought about putting it in members lounge, but thought as it was very muchly based on car audio here would be the best...

the latest issue of street machine, in the Fit & Fiddle section (page 114 for those of you that just lept at your copy to know what im talking about)
about using the spare wheel well as a sub enclosure - and still having the spare wheel in there.
i was looking at the pictures and thinking.. that looks somewhat like a magna spare wheel... and it kindna looks like a tail light from one too in the corner - and flick to the last page of the article - you can clearly see that the car in question is a TE/F/H (not sure which honestly)

has anyone here done this?

for those who dont know - the spare wheel well got fiberglass lining, with carpet and a trapdoor lid that allows you to access the sub / lift the lid, while keeping the boot floor perfectly flat as it was built up to level it off, and it looks super 'stealth' as they put what looks like factory spec carpet back down on top.

one of the 'concerns' that i personally would have with such a setup, is the bass is being generated soooooooo faaaaaaar out the back of the car... your numberplate is going to rattle like crazy and sound quality might start to lack.

just wondering what you guys thoughts on such an installation (and the fact that a early 3rd gen got used in Street Machine Mag - apart from that Sony Xplod Tl POS thing they did a while back)

I have heard of this being done, but i dont really see how you would get any decent sound quality either. Im sure there are far better and easier ways to mount a sub while still retaining access to the spare wheel as we have all seen in people on here cars(grammar?)

Altho; A for effort

my mum had a mazda 6 Luxury Sports that had the BOSE subwoofer in the spare wheel in the boot.. factory setup..

was kinda ok for a stock, factory install.. had no insulation etc and the sub sat in the upturned spare wheel and the bolt that held them both in went thru both of them..

it was a hatchback tho, so the sound was ok..

sedans had them mounted in the parcel shelf..

Her Peugeot 407 had a JBL Hi Fi Sub in the boot and her lancer has a Rockford Foasgate sub in the boot but you can kinda tell they are in the boot if u know what i mean..

Your boot will rattle regardless, its a Magna. My boot had serveral layers of deadening and even carpet underlay, still rattled with the TE. TJ was much better though. Most subs mounted pointing up will definately not maximise bass loading which means you will make it work really hard, especially in a sedan. Nothing that can't be fixed with the right tools :bowrofl:

Personally I would rather one of those rear corner boxes. They take up minimal room and seem to make the install look a little interesting while still stealthy if done correctly. :D

Didnt the TE/F/H have a 2 piece bootlid? and the TJ got a single? Im not sure what that means exactly but i have read that that is what makes it harder to sound deaden a TE/F/H boot.

Also what tools are you reffering too?

Kieran

Yeah you are correct about the boot lids.

Tools being time alignment and phase control. Can usually fix any cancellation problems a lot better than without them.
