Gday guys,
Just need a few quick replies, got back from a 3 week holiday today and went to start up the car, started fine with a deeper exhaust note than usual...ive been having my old man start her up and turn over the engine while i was away, but today as i backed it out of the drive and put her in first there seemed to be no throttle much at all, as if someone had removed 3 of the 6 cyls. very very loud exhaust note ensued with a feeling of a lumpy camdrive, with no power at all and an overly noisy car, i limped it home, all the while the car felt it was going to shake itself apart in the higher gears....when i got home i kept the engine idle going, it was idling very high (2000) and the problem didnt go away when she heated up a bit...Anyone got any ideas? Im completely stuck she was working fine when i left and now its all gone to rat****...

Cheers,
Adz

P.S. Car was idled for 5mins every 4 or so days thats it...

adam asked adza27- have you changed your plugs at all? when were they last changed?- his did this when his plugs were breaking up. Have you done any recent work?

check your ignition timing, i had the exact same symptoms when my timing was out. if not, it could be stagnant fuel if its been sitting for ages?

hmmm, yeah thinking they may have put something in the fuel at ultratune, maybe its not good for it to sit like that for a few weeks, ill check the plugs in the morning thanks guys.

if its richer then factory then something isnt right if you havent touched the ecu/tune, but if you mean rich as in general tune rich, like all cars are, you can get things like a S-AFC which can be used to lean the fuel out.

i have one myself

Your issue is that yo have been to ultratune!!!!

If it has been sitting, it is hard to believe this is been caused by not being run

If it is idling at 2k and missing on several cyl you may have a vac leak. Start at your booster vac line, check it is intact, perhaps a rat has crawled up and chewed a hole in the hose, dont laugh, have seen it before

It sounds like a vac leak

since the old plugs were dead, the computer was getting the incorrect information and continually trying to adjust things, give it a tank full to re learn the mixture before you check for any other issues relating to it running rich, if it doesn't after lean out after 1 or so tanks then you may have an additional issue, i can pop around during the week and check it out if you like.
cheers adza27

Could be plugs but I would be very surprised as usually plugs will cause a misfire with a very low idle or stall.

The plugs do not in any way control timing or anything for that matter, if it is running rich it is only because the plugs are not firing and burning the fuel

I would as I stated above look first for vacum leaks, this is the main reason you will get a fast idle. If someone has changed the inlet gaskets at some time this could also have sucked in if it is a paper gasket

they did, just not the way i thought they would....i was asking for them to pull them out and ultrasonically clean them not just chemically flush it.... Anyone know anywhere that does that type of injector cleaning in the sydney metro area?

On board injector cleaning is very good to use if they are using the proper cleaning kit. I sold mine a few years ago and have kicked myself since for doing so lol

The solution is so volatile if it is exposed to air it ignites!

Unless you have extremely bad injectors, onboard is fine

DO not get this mixed up with a bottle of rubbish in the tank !
