Hey guys, I have very limited knowledge on engines and the technical side of how car's work so basically I'm trying to establish the cause of a couple sounds my car is making. I'm getting a service soon and tryin to estimate how much it will cost me...

The first one is actually pretty weird. Excuse the weird explanation but it sounds like there's a bird stuck under the bonnet, it doesn't do it all the time, and normally only when i'm accelerating but it makes like a chirping sound. It kinda sounds like it's coming from the front wheels and only ever does it when the car is moving.

The second one I think is something to do with the clutch. It does it most of the time, but not all the time, and only when the clutch isn't in. When in neutral it makes like a ticking sound coming from the engine bay and I think it does it when driving along too but it's not as noticable. It's not real loud but loud enough to annoy me lol

Anyone had the same noises or any idea what they could be?

the te manuals, and afaik all 3rd gen manuals make a horrid noise when in neutral and the clutch is out with the engine idling. Kind of like a growling noise.

If it is just a ticking then i would say its a sticking hydraulic lifter. Common thing with the 3rd gens too.

The first one sounds like a loose/worn fenbelt to me, prob can tighten it a bit yourself to stop that, or if its badly worn, you can get a new one for no more than $20. But they can be a pain in the ass to change at times(well one of them is on my car anyway), but very do-able.

second one, well I don't quite know, but Screamin TE's response sounds pretty good to me :)

Any solution for the sticky hydraulic lifters? Subaru had their Upper Engine Cleaner, was a can that was sprayed into the intake manifold every service. You emptied half the can into the intake manifold then started the engine, then sprayed the rest of the can in while the engine was running (and you had to rev it, otherwise it'd stall the engine). Powerful ****, and burned like hell if you accidentally inhaled errant fumes from spraying it in the intake. Purpose was to combat lifter issues, mainly.
