View Full Version : Stock power figure for 380

Hi, I have 2 questions which will hopefully be very easy for someone to answer.
How many kilowatts should a stock 380 put out? Brochures and specs all said 175, but is that a real figure from a real car+engine? Or just an engine on a dyno? (If just an engine dyno, what would the "real life" figure be?)
And how much power loss would I expect to face with a front wheel drive car on the dyno? I was told 20% (give or take for various conditions, etc)

That 175kw is rated flywheel kw, as all manufacturer's advertised outputs are.
IMO ~20-23% drivetrain loss is about right for our cars in manual form. Add a bit more for an auto, I'd guess another 5-10%. Maybe towards the lower end of the scale for newer autos with torque-convertor lockup.
Drivetrain loss does not vary on conditions, but different dynos tend to give slightly (or sometime significantly) different readings due to various factors. These factors include:
- dyno settings, such as ramp rate, temp correction
- tyre pressure/compound size
- level of heatsoak in car
- some dynos just seem to read higher than others, e.g in general Mainline dynos seem to read a little lower than DynoDynamics dynos.

Thanks for that. That makes my numbers look better now.
(Yeah the varying conditions I meant, were things like dyno settings, car temps, etc.)

my figures from a dyno i did with just extractors only on a stock car(sports) netted me 115kwatw. With a car 163kw at the fly it lost around 30% to the treads(5spd auto.) Engine dynos are just engines...no pwr st. a/c etc.

But manufacturer flywheel outputs include all ancillaries.
Grubco, I think if you were after a stock 380 auto output on the dyno it would be around 125kw atw.

Yeah, that's what I wanted to know too, to put my dyno results into context (against the standard figures I never got). With all this info, I'm far more impressed with the gains I've made from the simple mods I did. Thanks.

I am not sure if that is the case with all manufacturers. I think JasonsVRX use to work for Mitsu. Maybe he can shed some light.
