Any price ideas on a heater core?

Mine is cracked and leaks coolant, don't think i need anything other than the actual core, i was told it costs around 1000 to fix by a mitsu dealership. That too much?

Also the actual wiring to the airflow switching knob is disconnected (turn the knob.. nothing happens), how difficult is that to reconnect?

the main cost is getting the dash out i believe not the actual unit.
but $1000 is way too much to get it done.

ring around other garages and you will probably be able to halve it.

yeah the actual heater core itself is the cheap part, its the labour to get at it by removing the dash thats the real killer.

i got the heater core replaced in a ZL Fairlane i had a few years ago, and it cost me just under 800bucks inc all parts and labour. i also got all my heater hoses replaced at the same time as well - which was about 100bucks worth.
i went to the most expensive garage in my area in perth too - the local BP Servo with a workshop...

if you know how to get your dash apart, and feel confident enough to tackle it, save yourself a few hundred bucks.
even if you source the part yourself (cheaply is best) and supply that to get the heater core replaced and that will save a bit on the cost side of things too.

cost of the core(core o rings and 90' bends) is about 250bucks but it take you
about 6 hour to get it out and and back in (i have done it too)

I had my done recently ...I asked for a coolant flush and part of the plastic assembly was already broken so the Heater Core had to be replaced. Mechanic reckoned it had probably been broken since manufacture.

Cost around the $500 - $550 they let me off a couple of hours labour ... I'm a good customer been there for awhile.

Get a quote ....but don't go to a dealer. There overheads are way to high.

Thanks for the tips guys, yeah i've asked my mechanic friend to get me a quote from his shop. I bought the car with the core broken and the knob disconnected, i got his acceptance to fix it because i said he sold me an unroadworthy car. Just my luck though the day before i was going to hand it in to him to get fixed i crash the car.
Hoping when i ring him tomorrow he is in a generous mood. If not more money down the drain :(

Yes the cost is all in the labour, you will find prices between $650 - 1000 (cheaper if you buy the heatercore yourself)

Like suggested ring around

Cores are also avail second hand, you can pressure test them before you fit them or go to a radiator place and get a change over unit, may have to pay a deposit until you return your old one.

Labour and coolant is the other cost, the job in a third gen is about 4 - 5 hours start to finish, depending if the person has dont it before, second gen are a little easier to do as the dash is easier to get out lol

Sent an enquiry off to Mitspares in Mordialloc, they told me $77 + $ 330 to fit. Thats 600 less so i'll most likely be going there. Thanks again for the help all
