ok im doing a carputer project. its all comign along great. just need to buy the powersupply and some other optional extras..

what im plannign on doing is fabricating a cd/dvd drive in the dash for the computer and also some usb slots. but seeign how both DINs are already taken (dvd and screen) and there very little room around that section and i never use the ashtray / wont let ppl smoke in my car i want to use the ashtray and remove the insides os the part that slides out and put the cd/dvd drive and usb slots in there.

if that makes any sence??

just wondering if anyone has done anythign like this b4 and know of and problem that might occur. as far as i can tell there plenty of room behind for the drives to sit and seem simple enough, the curved shape might make it a bit harder but should be quiet doable. also need to know wat is the best product to use to bog up the front so the handle thing to pull the ashtray out is gone and make it look like one peice not two.

heres a pic i found http://www.geardiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/dash31-450x337.jpg
i want that ashtray section to look like one peice.
i have no idea of any of this make any sence but if i can understand any help will be great.

oh another question.. for the carputer i plan on taking the easy option and using the AUX input for the sound from the carputer.. but this mean i need to have a cable runnign from the front of the headunit around the back and to the computer.. however theres a MIC input on the back of the headunit, same plug, still an input, does any1 know of this will work as a AUX in? i was goin to give it a try today, but cbf pullign the dash apart wen ill have to do it again next week, wen i get the ashtray and radio facia that im goin to fabricate. any1 now if the MIC input can be used like an AUX input.

if your runnigng amps just get a cable that goes from the stereo plug to two rcas and go straight to you amps

thought about doin it that way, but i am keeping my dvd headunit, so using the AUX input is the noly other way. it doent really bother me that much having a cable running from the front of the headunit and around to the back. but just thought if it was possible to use the MIC input as aux it would look alot neater.

Perhaps post what model your headunit is and someone can give you an answer to the MIC in question.

Running a long length of RCA to the headunit usually may result in your audio having interference. Instead, run a length of USB cable from your computer to an external sound card mounted close to the head unit and a short RCA (digital signal does not suffer from interference) to the head unit.

Alternatively if you have a good sound card (eg HippoHifi) you are better off just running your music straight from your computer into the amplifier! Then the MIC in won't be a problem.
