i used to have a ipod dock in my old car setup.
The short answer is that you need a 3.5mm to RCA cable.
So that's a cable with a 3.5mm (headphone) jack at one end and two RCA (just like the cables that go from a vcr/dvd player etc to a tv) one red one black.
of course with this cable you can simply plug it strait into the headphone jack on your ipod but going through the dock will sound slightly better at it will give you a true line level output instead of the attenuated output you get directly from the ipod.
As for the wide slot on the back for the usb cable this can be used instead of the line out port but you need a specialised cable and a compatible head unit.
Personally i just bought a car charger for the ipod and plugged it into the dock, looked slick and charged the ipod while i drove.
