The rule of thumb I've established is that paint protection really is not worth it. The product itself is only a couple of dollars, yet dealerships charge $$$ for it.

You are better off to spend your money on detailing products and polishing/sealing it yourself regularly (or getting a pro to do it).

i agree. Back in 2001 I was working for a dealership and paid dealer cost for a 5-way protection pack(tint, rust, vinyl, paint, cloth)It was $395 i think. They charged around 1300 at the time. Its cheaper these days but like Red said.....do it yourself. They have a catch with the protecetion packs where it must be inspected annually to keep warranty, and they charge for that too.

i apply it thru my detailing business, its not a bad product provided you use the proper wash solution with it.. a wax top up 2-4 times a month will really help..

some places are rip off.. i charge $400 for paint, $200 for cloth, $200 for plastic/vinyl/leather or $650 for the lot..

its hundreds cheaper than competitors for the same product basically.. but a simple wax once a month/quarter will do just as well as any paint protection..

put it this way.. i apply it, have unlimited access to left over product yet dont use it on my own cars.. ;)

i was amazing we had a red car that had it, someone ran into, it was fixed but the protection wasn't redone in that area, now it may have been the paint but the new area didn't look anywhere near as good as the rest of the car that was shiny when it was sold 10 yrs later.

ive been told from one of the very big names in paint protection (wont mention names, his a mate, dont want to get him in trouble) that after 3-4 washes you probably wont find a trace of the paint protection anymore.. its a gimmick that takes alot of ppl's hard earned cash....

i then said that my grandparents car had paint protection and after 15 years the paint was still good.. my mate said to me.. "how did they treat there car? let me guess, washed it all the time and garaged it all the time?" .. i said yeh thats right.. he said majoirty of ppl who will fork out the big cash for paint protection will look after there cars very well so thats why most of the paint on these cars last.. it not due to the rubbish they put on the car

dont waste your money in other words lol

they do that because most of the time there is more profit in 'aftermarket' sales of paint protection, reverse sensors/cameras, window tint etc etc than the profit in selling a new car itself..

a lot of people say its a waste of money.. i agree and disagree.. there are good products out there being used and there are also cheap and nasty ones..

provided you wash your car weekly, by hand with the proper washing medium in a correct manner and frequently polish/wax your vehicle there is no reason the paint should deteriorate..

my grandfather had an 86 XF Fairmont Ghia with MING protection.. he sold it in 2005 with 385,000kms on it and it still looked like it rolled off the showroom floor.. now after nearly 20 years it is highly unlikely there would be any paint protection left on it (and the technology back then is no where near as good as now days) but because he washed it weekly, by hand, and waxed it regularly it remained in tip top condition..

the reason a vehicles paintwork fades and/or oxidises is because of neglect. No paint protection will ever replace general maintenance of a car.. they still have to be washed regularly and waxed to protect the finish..

I am trialling a brand of paintwork protection that is teflon based on my mums new CJ lancer, and so far so good.. it is noticeabley easier to wash since the application and bugs and bird **** literally just hose off.. This particular brand is guaranteed for 3 years and i think it will go close to lasting that long..

but paying $1500+ is a blatant rip off.. buy a new car, wash it weekly and chamois it dry and wax it once every 3 months and i guarantee you it will look the goods for many many years to come..

finally, 2 things i find funny.. people who religiously get paint protection on their new car that they trade in every 3 years for a new model (seen a few people do that when i worked at a dealership) what a waste of money lol.. and finally, rust protection on a new car.. like wtf, 90% of the car is plastic.... and unless you live by the sea and are going to have the car for upwards of 15 years, rust isnt going to be a problem..

what paint protection was this? and how much did you pay??

i know tint-a-car was offering free paint protection with their tint for a while, not sure if they still are. (don't think it was exactly free but as a tint was priced at about $500..)

but as you said, paint protection is pointless if you don't look after your car as well. i wouldn't mind doing my paint protection to help make washing it easier and just giving it that extra bit of protection.

Correct!

Just make sure you're washing your car properly, so they come back later rather than sooner :P

pretty much all paint protection is just polish anyways... they just call it paint protection so they can charge more

not neccessarily..

i know ive detailed cars that have been treated with wax guard (up to 5 years ago) and there is definatley a film on the vehicle that is difficult to remove..
