View Full Version : Rear Firing Sub Boxes (e.g. Blake's Aussie Magna)
My current sub box sits nestled in tight behind the rear seats firing 2 x 12" subs forward into the rear seats, with the two amps powering my system mounted on the back of the box. The only problem with this is that I don't have it secured down in any way and whenever I accelerate reasonably hard (which seems to be an awful lot lately :) ) the sub box all rocks backwards and comes crashing back down when I hit the brake.
So after browsing around having a think about ways I can change it I was looking at blakes install with the 2 pioneer subs (the same as mine) firing backwards into the boot.
My question is: whats behind that wall that the subs are mounted onto? I presume its a nice sealed box tucked behind there, but does it have any ports or anything firing into the cabin? And what do you see when you fold the rear ski port down?
and finally .... what do you do when you get a flat? :-k

id recommend fixing its movements for now...just get 2 small ring angle brackets and screw it into the floor...Just watch where u screww....
i had my box bolted in like this and it stayed put!

I placed my box in different directions to see which gave me a better sound before i made the full enclosure and i found firing the towards the rear gave me the best result.
I seriously reccomend mounting them as soon as possible. The best way to do this is get some cheap L brackets and bolt one side to the box and one side to the floor. Dead basic.

My box is facing backwards, It fits that well that it doesnt move without being screwed down. It's fantastic! :) I'll never be able to do it again..lol.
The carpet stuff that I covered it with keeps it in it's place coz it kinda acts like a velcro on the boot's carpet.
Quite possibly a one off and Im very lucky!

firing subs towards the rear of the car is recommended for most models. Due to the length of the bass wave you want it to travel as far as possible before it hits you, so facing them backwards allows them to reflect off the back of the car and come back towards you... Ive spent many many hours experimenting with sub placement and have found this holds true for most vehicles.... you could expect an increase of anywhere from 2-10db with correct sub placement.

I have two 10's firing backwards, my box quite litrally has valcro on the bottom of it to stop it moving... works like a charm.... no screwing, making up brackets, nothing... best part is that it is easy to take out if need be.

Yer with the Magna you loose bass if you fire them into the cabin, if you have the sub box right behind the seat. I moved mine heaps before finding my best spot, which was in the tyre well but I didn't want to loose the spare tyre so I placed them in the back as far as i could.

steve, the velcro makes the box really easy to remove and change positions for the owner.... but it makes it even easier for the car theif to steal... be careful. A pair of 5 dollar brackets from your local Hardware store is a very intelligent investment.... they may save you several hundred dollars in the long run.

Another point is that if you get pulled over and your sub box is not secure they can defect the car.

I like your work mate!
by the look of that photo, the box is bolted to the spare tire access flap.... Does that mean you can't get to your spare tire if you need to???

I ended up taking my spare tyre out as it was just excess weight and with my boot enclosure it would be much easier to get someone to fetch my tyre if i ever have a flat.

Nahh I have built a false floor out of about 18mm mdf and have put a hinged door in using piano hinging.
should go get some more pictures of it
Love your work LHM... I've decided to do a pretty similar install to what I see in your pic there. I'm going to use my existing sub box (pretty much the same as yours) though I'm gonna put a false front over it with a triple diamond logo cut out of it.
I also like the idea of the false floor, with the redesigned spare tire lid so I can still access the tire. Call me crazy, but if ever I'm halfway to nowhere and just happen to run over a nail, then I would rather fix it on the spot and get on with my day.
Though I've got to ask LHM... why the MDF so thick.... 18 mm for the whole floor... thats gotta weigh a ton. Considering you were replacing the standard floor in the magna which is only about 6mm, surely even 12mm stuff would have been enough?

hehehe you havent heard my subs.....
to put it anopther way..... I was trying to stop the shielding from my exhaust rattling/falling off :)
its all nice and solid this way and gave me plenty to screw into so everything is nice and sterdy.
Tried taking more pics but its a bit dark.... will give it another go tomorrow :)
Oh I see... good point.
What amps are they.... how much power are you giving those subs.... I've got the same subs, and lately I haven't been too happy with their performance, but I think thats cause of the power I'm using to run them as opposed to the actual sub itself.

the amp puts out 2x800w peak... about 400w rms
yep... that'd definitely be my problem then.... I'm giving mine a paltry 240W peak (each). Why do amps have to be soooo damned expensive :-(

Yeah I have mine running bridged aswell so they are running a 2 ohm (Which is good for bass) you just have to have an amp that is 2 ohm stable
