I want to fit a new cluster to my TJ but I'd be needing the speedo 'wound on' as the replacement is literally, brand new - can anyone recommend an instrument service in Sydney - preferably Inner West?
cheers
PS: are email notifications working in this dump yet?

I guess you just start from zero then? Make a note of where it is at and if you ever sell the car you have to tell them it's not the orig KM's.

well yes of course - but this can be altered and a certificate provided so when the time comes there's no hint of 'dodginess' etc

Are you getting the part from Mitsu? If so, they should be able to do it for you & fit it as well.

I've been in that situation, see http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35055&highlight=tjawd+cluster
I wanted a sports cluster, on a AWD. Thanks to TJSports for sourcing me one in Melbourne, that was a lifesaver. General Auto Electical is in Lidcombe, directly opposite Rookwood, on the main road that continues on from Arthur st (?) from strathfield square. Its close enough to inner west. They charge ~$150

I've tried on the 2nd gens and they have some sort of anti-wind-back mechanism
Why dont you grab a speedo cable from the wreckers, plug it into the cluster and just run the end off a really fast electric motor

Just take it to a speedo guy(instrument) and he will do it for you.. Wind forward and back..:)

Okay genius... they don't HAVE speedo cables - its all electronic even though its an analogue odometer

as tuffy said, with the 2gens,u plug the cable in,hook it up2 a drill and pull the trigger.just dont pass the intended km,or youll hav2 start again.lol.theres also a way 2do it for the eletronic ones much the same way.

AGREED! Okay the problem seems to be on the way to solved. Have been in touch with this place via emails:
http://www.autoelectronics.com.au/index.html
- seems very professional so far - he's proposing removing the Odometer from the old cluster and transferring it to the new cluster. Same day service - costs $150 plus postage. So I'll try that and see how it turns out.

Don't do this! Its very risky, one place was going to try this, and they said they could easily bugger it up. That was from a company near Revesby, even though they knew they would loose my business.
This looks like the same place I went - different name though (same address I think). They just reprogrammed it. I was given the name by Mitsubishi. Call up Phil Gilbert Mitsu spare parts division, they will tell you for sure. If you buy a new cluster, mitsubishi dealers can't reprogram them (Ford had a huge scandal with its dealers over turning back ODO's, so its not a bizarre as you might first think). They have to send it out, and I went to the place they recommended.

Have another look at the site - its in Parramatta (not the Lidcombe mob - I found them also via a friendly PM at another Mitsu site), and he has a section on Instrument panels where he details some quite complex repairs that he undertakes on instrument panels - far more difficult stuff than just swapping an odometer unit. With 12 months warranty on all work so yeah I reckon its worth a try.
I did see your other posts etc but at the end of the day I'm still not quite sure what work you had done exactly...
