Hey everyone,

I've got my car in at the exhaust shop today for a full replacement system, using RPW Race headers (which apparently needed modification to fit ) a 3" metal cored catalytic convertor, 2.5" mandrel bent mild steel piping, 2x 15" hotdog resonators, and a muffler.

I've just gotten a call from the exhaust shop, saying that my car might be over the limit for acceptable noise, if I use a straight through muffler. The owner has recommended a chambered muffler, and possibly a 3rd resonator, in an effort to bring the noise under 90dB.

What are people's thoughts on this? Is this a suitable system?

I'm not after the loudest and meanest exhaust out there, but given the current climate in NSW with regards to modified cars, I'd like to stay as legal as is possible.

Thanks everyone :)

the likelyhood of being pulled over in a magna is slim to nill even modified.

ofcourse legal is always good. Its going to be hard to be under legal with a straight through design

What size hotdogs have they used? if they are similar to the stock ones then they arent big enough. You can fit relatively large hotdogs (barrel lenth and bore) under a magna. Go a little longer, and at least 2inches bigger diameter then stock. They fit. The rear muffler doesnt have to be straight through though, as with the system you have a offfset glass packed muffler at the back would not cause much if any flow restriction, but would remove noise much better.

Only problem is cost but its the price you have to pay to do it right.

Depends how you want it. I wouldnt change it for fear of the police. Just make sure you keep the standard muffler so if you get done you can have that put on for 40$ or whatever.

So you're going to kill any gain you got from the headers and rest of the system by putting a restrictive muffler on it? not really a good way to spend your cash.

A mate had one of those varex mufflers fitted to his rx7, and the difference is night and day, well worth the extra cash if you are worried about noise.

i have standard manifolds, no reso and a 5" x 12" round straight through on my TE 3.0 and i dont reckon its over the limit. It was when i had no muffler on it at all, but only just i think.

Tell em to stop thinking like sheilas and make it louder!!!!

Well, I picked her up this evening -

:D

It's just right. There's a bit of a drone around 2000rpm, which is understandable in an auto, but past that it's ballistic. There's a deep bark on startup, followed by a nice boomy idle.

I'm very happy with how it's turned out.

Thanks for all the replies guys :)

Also keep in mind new systems always sound extra droney, it will subside over the next few hundred kms.

the varex mufflers are just as illegal as a loud system, because by the law the exhaust cant be variable in nature.

it must be set and pass, if it is able to be altered on the fly then it breaks said rules.

Having said that though if when fully open isnt louder then legal the chances of even being looked at by the police is very slim
