The abs in my 99th wagon doesn't work, i don't mind so much, but would rather have it functioning for my wife, the fuse under the bonnet is fine, the abs rings are on the shafts, is there another fuse somewhere in the car, the abs light on the dash ins't light up and i don't even have a owners manual so don't really know where to start looking for problems, normally do all the work on cars myself but never had any experience with abs. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Does the abs light on the dash light up when the ignition is turned on? And how do you know it is not working? Have you had lock up under very heavy emergency braking?

You don't think this could be the case why your ABS doesn't work anymore?? :bowrofl:

Get it checked out by a mechanic buddy
Are you positive it actually has ABS? Not all TH's have abs, although why it would have an abs fuse if it doesn't is beyond me. I'll have a look through the manual and see what I can dig up.
Edit: Oddly there isn't anything I can find directly related the ABS being completely non-functional, but your best bet is to get the car hooked up to a diag machine and run some tests to the ABS-ECU to determine any faults in the system. If the ABS-ECU itself is non-functional, the ABS system obviously won't work, as with if the circuit is broken anywhere, ie fuse.
Just to confirm, the fuse you checked is the one labeled in the attached diagram yes?

Really? I have a exec and even it has ABS... execs have nothing else :(

Was an optional extra, as were drivers air bag etc, might have been a safety pack of sorts.

Definately has abs, definately doesn't work as i have locked wheels on purpose to check it, abs light on dash lights up on ignition.
Micjaiy, Problem was there before that. lol
That's the one Lugo, checked all of them whilst i was there.
I'll give the wheel sensors a go Schnell, fairly straight foward to get out i presume?

My 2000 TH Exec did not have ABS or Airbag. It came with a cassette player but. lol

Yep. Very straight forward. Undo the fitting, then use something like soft toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol (Woolies sell this in the shaving isle as a product in a green bottle and it's called Isocol. Few bucks a bottle) to gently clean.

Cool, i'll get onto this weekend and let you know how it went.
Don't know if it'll help, but you can try resetting the ABS-ECU and see if that makes a difference.
1. Press on the brake pedal so that the brake pedal switch
is on.
2. Switch the ignition ON.
3. Wait until the ABS warning lamp goes out, then release
the brake pedal.
4. “Toggle” the brake pedal so that the ABS–ECU receives
a brake pedal switch on signal 9 times in 20 seconds.
5. The warning lamp will illuminate for 1 second to confirm
code erasure.

I've had same prob, 99TH Solara Advance (def has ABS as had dual airbags which was a Safety Pack option on even execs in TH). Mrs was driving and came across a few roo's in country Vic, definately no ABS as $300 worth of 1 week old front tyres were flat spotted on the spot. Will try cleaning the wheel sensors and resetting ABS ECU and let you know how I go.

Well i think there maybe probs with my TH too, just turned the ignition on(tried to to the ABS-ECU reset and nothing) and found no ABS light, only SRS, Seat Belt and Engine lights. Which I'm guessing means my ABS circuit isnt functioning at all or for some reason I dont have one.
Either way, most of my saturday is going to be spent working on my car I think.

First of all check your options codes to make sure you do have an ABS circuit :P

You mean on the compliance plate? Will do first thing in the morn, any referneces on AMC as to which codes mean what?
But one would hope so, thought only dual srs(which i have and cruise) was available as part of a safety/power pack which included dual srs, cruise and abs/ebd.

It's my understanding that all Solaras had ABS.

OPTION CODES
DATA PLATE
The Data Plate is attached to the right hand side of the bulkhead (adjacent to the compliance plate) in
the engine compartment and is stamped with vehicle option codes, trim codes and a daily body sequential
build number.
AA5 ABS & A/C
AB0 Driver SRS, ABS, A/C & Cruise Control
AB7 Driver SRS, ABS & A/C
These numbers were applicable for the TJ i think so im not sure if they will transpire to your option plate. As you can see ABS was packaged into option groups. But im positive you could order it separately... i just cant find the option code for it.

Nah they seem to be different, mine has E49, D04 and H50 its a TH
Where can I find out what they mean??
Luke
Have you ever known it to function since owning the car? Might want to check the ABS bulb hasn't been removed by a previous owner doing a dodgy if it started to play up.
ABS along with dual srs, cruise etc are standard on the TH Solara. It'll be there somewhere.

Just look in the engine bay, there either is an ABS unit fitted or not, it's not hard to miss. It's fitted on the Passenger side of the bay toward the back, looks like a solid aluminium block with steel (brake) lines connected to it.
Looks similar to this:

Yeah thats what I thought, it has an ABS unit, but the wheels lockup, there is no ?ABS light on the dash and my option codes appear missing for ABS, Cruise and Dual Airbags.
only these are visible
D04 - 4 Speed A/T
E35 - 3.5 litre S4 V6
H50 - Air conditioning
so these must be missing
AD8 Solara marketing package
B14 ABS
J30 Cruise control
W37 Alloy wheel 15”
AC7 Dual SRS & A/C
got me a bit stumped
Luke
Like I said, check to see if the bulb for the ABS light is actually intact, only way to know that is to pull the cluster out, will take you 10 mins. You have checked the fuses yes?

Checked in the engine bay, looks intact but the clear plastic cover appears to me missing off the top of the fuse.

Replace the fuse to be safe I reckon. Make sure its the right size for the ABS.

Lugo has a point. Maybe they removed the globe when the car was sold to conceal a fault. Does the ABS warning light go on when you turn the ignition to "on"?

No nothing comes on at all for abs

I knew a guy who wired his ABS light up to the oil pressure light to pass an MOT. When you first start the engine, it illuminated then went out (as the oil pressure light does.) Passed his MOT. Dodgy...
