View Full Version : Transmission Slipping
The past few days the TR's been having how I can only describe as slipping issues from the auto gearbox. Essentially what its doing is building up far more rev's than usual under normal acceleration but getting very little if any power to the wheels.
I personally haven't driven the car when this has occurred, but it has once or twice in the past (like 6 months ago) slipped totally on me feel like it was in neutral until I let it drop back to idle, I believe this is similar to what its doing now, only previously for me it slipped under firm acceleration, where as now its had this slipping issue under normal acceleration from mum driving, so its not the result of a heavy foot.
Its booked in for a Transmission Service in the morning, I'm just curious as to whether anyone else has experienced such an issue, and what sort of issues we could be looking at, and if the service should resolve the problem or if the issue is more severe.
Cheers guys.

They dropping the oil or flushing it?

Does it happen when you accelerate, then back off and the transmission tries to shift up into overdrive?

sounds like the description i gave when my clutch went on me...maybe the auto clutch?

Nah just under constant acceleration. When its done it to me it felt like 3rd to 4th shifting, when mum was driving it the past couple of days it would have been 2nd to 3rd based on the speeds being done, and it wasn't totally slipping out, it was still getting some power to the wheels according to her, just barely any.
I'll report back after the service is done.

Ensure they use OEM Mitsubishi Auto Trans fluid.

if its getting drive to the wheels issue, i don't believe they have LSD's so thats out, which means its between the box and the motor,
sneaky feeling your torque converter is the issue.
Ensure they use OEM Mitsubishi Auto Trans fluid.
Yeah he does, fortunately our mechanic knows Magnas inside out pretty well :P
We'll see what its like when we pick it up in a couple of hours, torque converters expensive? I would've thought if it were the torque converter it'd be a constant issue, not one that just pops up on the odd occasion, not every time you drive it.

torque converters are about $300 + Labour. sounds like you are lacking some oil in the trans

To me just sounds like it needs new fluid.
Let us know how it goes.
Service was done yesterday on the transmission, haven't driven it but all reports from those that have are good so far.
Unfortunately, the Transmission decided to give up this morning, so now its only going forwards very slowly and just revving if you try to move any quicker. Its sitting in storage at the mechanics atm, and probably will be for a while now.
Its a given the car's going to need a new transmission, I'm just looking for an idea of costs, and maybe places to suggest going to around Northern Melbourne. Based on other peoples experiences, our mech charges around $2k to change a transmission, which to me sounds pretty steep for an auto to auto change.
Opinions or views appreciated.
P.S. Don't suggest replace the car, its not happening. Anything other than that I'm happy to hear.

Second that
Manual conversion ?
Mum drives it 90% of the time, no way in hell we'd get her into a Manual car lol

OK then, replace the car :D
Maybe pick up a recod tranny, and get the mechanic to put that in.
How long are you intending to keep the car for ?

I think the wording used was keep it until it stops.....
It'll be a few more years yet.
Suggestions on places to look for reco tranny's? Not my specialty.

You would be looking at between $1500-$200 for a reconditioned change over unit. Some places may be able to do fitment in that price as well.
Whereabouts are you located? And what model Magna?

As said, TR magna, Northern Melbourne.
Mechanic has had a look at it, was down there talking to him before, seems as though its only the O/D that's shot, so we're looking at $450ish to fix that up. I really need to have driven it to know the problem properly, but to me the way mum described it it doesn't sound as simple as O/D to me, because she seems to think it was only moving a couple of metres before it'd slip out of gear. I suppose time will tell.

Take it to another mechanic to get another point of view man.

mines costing $1885 to rebuilt and put it back in on the 4cyl tr. this also includes the price for a new rear main seal
just to give you an idea i rang around eastern suburbs and prices ranged from $1600 with a 1yr warranty to $2200 with a 3yr warranty

Easier said than done when its 1) in your mechanics storage area, 2) mums decision. Anything that's done to that car is done at the same garage, and his work has always been fantastic so theres no changing mums mind on that.
We'll just see how it goes. He didn't confirm that it was the over drive, but from the drive and inspection they had today that's what he's thinking, they're going to get into it monday, so I guess we'll find out for certain then.
Yea, my auto is slipping all the time in my TR with the 2.6 carby.
Basically under normal acceleration it'll slip badly between 2nd and 3rd.
If you are driving normally and then floor it, say just to accelerate hard or just to over take it'll slip instantly and won't go into gear until the revs drop back down to between 1000 and 2000.
The other one is when you go around a corner and put your foot down it'll do the normal auto thing of kicking down into gear but as soon as it kicks down it'll slip straight away.
Bloody annoying to drive. The fluid is full and slightly dark so wouldn't hurt to get a flush but last time I got an auto flush it cost me $200 but there's no guarantee it'll fix the problem cause I might need the internal band tightened too which I've been told is $190. No way in hell I'm paying $2000 for a reco gearbox tho.

Yeah the bloody auto's can suck at times. I have changed mine 3 times and the last one cost me $1600 reco replacment. Wish I never did it was a stupid mistake cos now 1 year later and its leaking fluid all over the joint. Have had the bottom pan gasket replaced but we worked out its not that so Im giving up on Auto's and going for a manual transplant. Goodluck with it I wouldn't pay more than $1700 for one if I was you.

IF your going to keep the car forever as you said, that try not to go to cheap in terms of a gearbox. Either source a new one, or, get one rebuilt correctly.
No point short changing yourself on a gearbox that may not work in another 18-24 months.

Why would he spend $2000 on a car worth $1900?
Just get the problem fixed.
Thats like if your engine leaks oil you rip it out and put a new one in (even though i did that I'm trying to get a point across..)

Ended up just being the overdrive clutches. Mums description of it stopped as soon as you tried to move was more like moving until it hit 40ish...lol
Drives beautifully now.

How much was it for the repair? My gearbox is a bit funny sometimes.
Did you take it just to the general mechanic or to a gearbox specialist?
$550 all up. Took it too our usual mechanic, he knows quite a bit about magna's, but I'd say any decent mech should be able to do it for you.
