First of all, I have read around the forums for threads relating to this but I can't for the life of me work out what you guys are talking about, seems so confusing!

I have a 1998 TF Magna Wagon and I want to upgrade from those 15" Hubbies (not sure of width?)

I was looking at some 18x8 rims that my mate has, but I'm pretty sure (read on vicroads) I can't go above 17?

Current tyres: 205/65/15

Tyres on new rimes: 235/40/18

Hopefully someone can clear it up

I'm not too sure about the specific legalities to how much larger the physical wheel can be, I always thought in Vic as long as the rolling diameter was close enough you were ok. Speaking of rolling diameters the 18"s will be 0.4% smaller, so its not going to cause you any problems with speedo accuracy, I myself can't see the problem.

Always thought the 2" rule was one of those in other states but not something Vic had  Can you link us to the section of Vic Roads you read that on please?

See the vicroads modification thing here:

Maybe I read it wrong? I was referring to the part that said

"the replacement rim must not be more than 25mm wider than the widest wheel specified by .."

Hey mate,
Ive got 19" rims on my Rada(Mitsu claimed that 16" was the biggest you can fit on an AWD)
But as long as the new rims and tyres aren't bigger thanthe rolling diameter of the stock rims you'll be fine. also check the load rating on your mates tyres as Mitsu has specific ratings for magnas.
And does your mate also own a magna as each brand of car have different offsets and others simply won't fit.

So is the rolling diameter fine as Lugo said?

I believe the load rating is 95w? I think thats borderline for magnas

Ford AU? Offset is 5 x 114.3 I'm pretty sure

Also, so what is the Vicroads thing saying?

that just means the width of the rim
its saying you can only go 1" bigger in width
says nothing about what size rims you can get, just to keep the rolling diameter as close as possible to stock

So what is the stock width of the 15"? (or how do i find out)

If its not 7" that means I can't get the 18x8? Correct?

Mitsu claimed that 16" was the biggest you can fit on an AWD
Thats the smallest they claim, not the largest, 15"s won't fit around the brakes.

Rolling diameter is fine (difference is 2.3mm), load and speeding rating is fine if its 95w, 5 x 114.3 is the PCD, offset for an AU will probably be something like +36. Test fit them before you buy them to make sure they actually fit on the car with scrubbing etc.

Technically speaking the wheel will be wider than what it should be according to vic roads (15" wheels are 6" wide I believe), but I highly doubt you'll be dicked for it, plenty of members are running 8" wide wheels on their cars.

Thanks Lugo

so the only problem I'd have is with insurance if they assessed it or whatever, which i could just take them off?

We have the same width increase rule in the ACT. But - cooincidentally - my car was inspected by ACT Roads recently for the brake conversion. The bastards insisted on turning this into a full inspection. I knew I was fine on wheel/tyre rolling diameter but wondered what they would say about the width. The guy checked the placard and noted that std on the car was 16 X 6. He noted I had 18 X 8's and then moved straight on to check that the tyres didn't foul the body work or suspension/steering at the front on full lock. Since nothing was touching he cleared it. I think what this teaches us is that the width rule is treated with some flexibility by the authorities. The key seems to be making sure that the wider wheel/tyre combo does not touch anywhere on body or suspension.

The other interesting parts were as follows:
- billet aluminium pedals I fitted without rubber dot thingies. Cleared with no prob
- RPW inlet manifold. Not even interested - they went right past it
- K&N pod filter unboxed and open in the engine bay (soon to be remote RPW unit). So long as it was securely mounted (which it is), not even interested
- air horns. Didn't care
- cut-in bonnet ducts which involved cutting bonnet skin braces. Congratulated me on neat fitting and moved on.

ALL of these are things which others on this forum have said are illegal. Now maybe in some States they are. But in ACT all of these were fine. Moral of the story? Get advice from the sages here at AMC. But also go in and see your rego authroity (which I did each time before I made these mods) and confirm the opinion to sort opinion from hard fact...

Oh - and to get back to the point - ryan2991, if your rego authorities clear your wheels/tyres your insurance company will also be quite happy. Good luck with it.
