View Full Version : Headers for my AWD
Got the HM headers fitted today. They sent the FWD ones last week  and delivered the
AWD ones this morning.
It has the heat coating paint on it so I haven't thrashed it yet. But, I did notice that I am
not nearly as heavy footed to get it moving. Also, the noise, or the lack of. It is quieter
then the stock and has less drone. In addition, the replacement was approx half the weight
of the original.
Will monitor performance and economy over the next few weeks to see how it performs.
hi Vlad, thats good news,i have been keen to hear some first hand info on that set-up as im considering the same. Nothing wrong with losing some weight off our heavy pigs either.

i been thinking about doing this getting the HM Headers, and been looking at the ones on ebay but the price inc postage/courierage kinda scares me.
i would have thought that the new headers would have increased sound...
what else is changed in your exhaust?

Great to hear.
Yeah the AWD's are fairly noisy up front even when system is totally stock.
Pictures?

Good job. Keep us posted on how you go, HM's are on my to do list.

Shouldn't be a problem. I got mine from boltonperformance for $450.00 delivered. I think
they are now $490.00. The exhaust fitter said that "That was damn cheap!" Even he has
difficulty getting them at that price.
Only problem I had was that they delivered the wrong ones, 107SS for the FWDs instead of
the 116SS for the AWDs which arrived this morning.
The droning has definitely reduced. I'm guessing this is due to the better flow of the HMs
compared to the stock. I'll take a photo of the stock ones tomorrow and you can compare
them against the HM ones.

I'm running the hurricanes for more bottom end and am getting a tune tomorrow so I'll post up some gains for us AWD loners ;)

i am still wondering if i should finish off my pacemakers..
the x-force extractors i fitted gave absolutly zero gain.. and make the car sound terrible.. (like 300zx terrible) *quivvers*
good to see though, i know they are cheapies.. but what sorta lengths were the primaries, and were the secondaries the same length as eachother? (on the exforce ones they are about 18 inches in difference, which makes it sound terrible, wouldn't be good for the wave pulses either) any idea on pipe sizes? and what did the collectors look like?

I have the FWD version of the HM Headers on mine and can confirm that the engine is quieter (Natch!) however the low and mid speed pickup is very good and the part throttle kickdown on the auto is improved. The Primary pipes, though short, are all equal length, and the two secondaries are also equal length, so they're basically a classic design for a set of street headers.

usually the short 'interference' primaries, and long secondaries is the way to get good bottom end out of small 4 bangers... same applies to street v8's..
not saying that a set of 4-1's or 6-1's couldn't.. but thats the general idea..
Yep, the HM ones are designed to give good bottem end torque from 1800rpm on wards. I
noticed this morning that the sound has changed a little, a little burble has appeared at
cruising speed and as SARRAS said, the in gear acceleration has improved a lot.
I've taken photos of my stock manifold and pipe and also measured their weight. The stock
one weighed 20kgs. Its cast iron wrapped in SS for heat shielding.

My set should be on the way :)
The difference in the primaries is amazing! Definitely looking forward to them now :)
How much were they to get fitted Vlad?

I got mine fitted at $180.00 at Exhaust Plus, Stepney. Took the owner and his worker amost
2 hours.
Remeber to use non-silicon or sensor safe silicon sealer for the O2 sensor and let the car idle
for 5 minutes to bake the enamel on. The kit does not come with manifold gasket so they used
the originals with some silicon seal.

i mean no offence by this, but if you pay someone to install these you are wasting your money, they are one of the most simple items to install. you only need a jack an a hand full of spanners and sockets.

I run Hurricanes on mine. Car seemed very smooth thru the range. Can hear the pulses thumping from 4400 up, pretty cool sound. Must say that the pulsing sound is much quieter/less noticeable since I had the tune done. Better combustion I suppose.

so does anyone know why i cant buy the fwd 3.5L equivalent and fit them to my car 3L does the difference in block height make that much of a difference??

Too right, I'm going to do it myself, if it was like under $100 I'd let someone else do it purely because I'm lazy.

Take a note from TUFFTR's book with his extractors that he ordered from a 3L for his 3.5L, they need an adaptor of some sort.
Yeah, I could have done it myself if I had the time, tools and ramps. Anyhow, its been over
a week now since fitting and I can tell you that doing the same trip everyday to and from work,
the fuel economy has changed (has not had a reset for a while) from 13.9 to 13.7 with a distance
from empty of about 450-460 before fitting to 490 and improving. The torque has improved so
much that going up a slight slope, like those on Main North Road, it holds 1400rpm at 60kph
with the foot lightly on the accelerator.

That is the benefit of the extra length primaries.
Looking at the 2 sets of photos, IF the primary diameters are the same then the Hurricane headers should be more beneficial lower down as the primaries are that much longer.
Also, I understand that the HM headers are really the Ralliart design with relatively short primaries and an OEM production type 3 into 1 joint collar.
Can anyone with experience with the Hurricane headers tell us whether they are a straight bolt in for a TJ.
Another gotcha for TL/TW owners is that again I understand that the joint pipe with the O2 sensor is a different length compared to the TJ.

This page in my build thread might be interesting for those considering these HM Headers for their 3.5L FWD.

That video is without anything other than primaries :bowrofl:
Quieter engine now but I'm yet to stand behind my car and see if it's louder out the back.
Kinda funny, whatever they painted the headers in is bubbling a little after the run I gave it today lol

You are supposed to let it bake on before giving it curry! D'oh! *insert forehead Slap*
Nice set of extractors.... good to see gains. and fuel economy from them.

Yeah it strangles the overall diameter of the pipe by at least 6mm. Considering getting them rewelded but I really cbf now!!!

what the **** did you drive to the isa or something
I noticed something strange with the noise level. Went to my parents house on the weekend
via the Port River Express Way. Got up to 95km/hr. Was dead quiet. However, as soon as we
got off the express way and into 60km/hr zones, it was noticeably louder than normal and
after driving for 20kms or so in 60km/hr zone, it goes quiet again.

heat in the muffler :)
my mates 60th anniversary VE, he just fitted some SV6 headers, and did his own twin 2 inch system (he is a fabricator) with some resonators and mufflers at the back, does exactly the same thing.. once off the freeway and you take off the lights for the first time it's super loud in comparison.. but after some normal driving or the car is parked for a bit, it returns to a normal sedate note..
