Hi guys, im new to this forum but have been collecting and upgrading my car stereo for years. Anyway now that ive just cleaned out my old room at my folks place it has occurred to me just how much leftover gear i have. Its all high end stuff and in near new condition.

I dont want to sell it because i dont think i would get what its worth. So anyway, what needs to be done in order to wire my system up for home use.

I figure i would be able to build an enclosure for 2 pairs of speakers and wire them up in parallel to make them 8ohm and hook them up to a domestic amp but what would i need to do to get a head unit and car amp to work in a home environment.

I currently have a head unit and 4 speakers set up as a small stereo running off a 12v DC converter but this doesn't have the amperage to support an amplifier and the larger ones that do are simply ridiculously expensive.

Does anyone know how how the shops like strathfied and that power their displays?
(i asked at my local strathfield but they just kept trying to sell me phone plans):doubt:

How many amps would i need to run a full setup?

as in 4 speakers, amp, sub, etc?

and could you possibly run it off an old (but working) car battery plugged into a charger?
wow this is looking like becoming an ugly setup

the charger wouldn't recharge the battery enough.

i really don't know why you would waste your time with is, as it is a very ugly setup.
I have a deck, two & sub running in my workshop off at 30amp supply.
just save and buy some home audio

I had 2 x 10" car subs in box and four 6" speakers hooked up and both running domestic amps.

Sound quality isn't all that great....so i sold it all.

by the time you buy, batteries/convertors and all that jazz to get it working, you could have sold all that car audio gear and bought yourself a reasonably priced 5.1ch system with 100+ inputs.

Hence why;

Car Audio = for cars
Home Audio = ....you guessed it, for Home lol

Ultimately, it can be done, but may or may not be worth it, depending on the gear you have, and how much you want to spend.

A deep cycle batter with a trickle charge will work good, considering you won't have your system cranked 24/7 anyway. As for an ugly setup, all you need to do is build enclosures for each item, with a few chunky toggle switches and you're sweet. Get some berch plywood or something, then splash some tung oil at it. Nobody will know.

You would be using equipment not designed for it purpose in a way though. A 12V power supply that's able to support amps will be hella expensive.

I'd suggest installing the gear in a car, or selling it and buying proper home audio stuff. Hey, any chance you into headphone amps? It's been my fetish of late.

Yea i get what you are al saying about selling it and buying new domestic stuff... but dammit i like my little projects :D

For example last time i replaced my head unit i found an old cd holder and cut a bit out of it and put the, now replaced, cd player in there. (used a cheap little dc converter)

The pictures look kinda crap but when its turned on it actually looks quite slick, especially having nearly no buttons on he unit.

Then i got my bedside cabinets, ripped the shelves out padded it infinite baffle style with the inside on an old duna and stuck some speakers in there

Sounds amazing for what it is

Yea as i said i love doing little projects like these.

I did this not long ago. Had a left over stereo for the house which has 4x 30WRMS @ 6ohm outputs - 2 being LP and 2 being HP.

Basically I like projects as well. What happens here is that inside their is a Sony home theatre with 85WRMS x5 and 165WRMS for the sub. I then wired up the rears through the roof to a low level converter and hooked it up into the above stereo. The sloted enclousure houses 2x 6x9's which are LP quite high but that's ok and the 2 way 6inchers are mounted in their own sealed box up in the eves. I would have put them straight in the roof but I wasn't allowed to cut holes :doubt:

End result... angry neighbours :D

Yer Ive seen a couple of car stereos running off 12V PC power supplies. For about $50 you would be able to get a decent 500W power supply
