Hi all,
As I have seen a few people making threads in here about their cars with new rims and the like, I thought I'd better get in on it too, as I have just purchased new rims.

But for a quick introduction on my car, it is a black (Stealth) 2006 Series 1 'base model' 380 with some extras and badged Limited Edition (which came out right at the end of Series 1 run). The extras include: alloy wheels (16s), reverse sensors, bluetooth car kit, driving lights, bootlid spoiler (with led stop light), & chrome exhaust tip (round not oval).

Following other users with the now-famous 380 Power Mods, my car has: straight-thru rear muffler, US Galant 90mm intake, K&N air filter panel, removed under-bonnet front rubber strip, and removed engine cover. In addition I have also lowered it with King Springs (Super Lows on front, Lows on rear).

Finally it was time for the wheels. But this stage, due to my fussy nature, took me 8 months! This time was spent looking, thinking, searching, loving then hating, and changing my mind again and again... until finally I found this wheel. It is a Stamford Phantom in 19x8.5 with Falken tyres 245/35/R19. From early on, I decided that only a black-spoked/silver rimmed wheel would look right on my black car, and it had to be 19 inches (initially I wanted 20s, but later changed to 19s).

Anyway, here's the recent pics of my black 380.

Lastly, while I still checking out many potentially suitable rims, I made several chops of my car to see what it would look like (although note I only did the first two on second row, the others were done by guys here at AMC). And the Jessica Alba pic was an avatar I used here ages ago.

Black wheels on a black car may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love it! Adding to that that they are 19s on a lowered 380, gives it the perfect stance! And from behind the 245 tyres look massive compared the original 215s.

I forgot to mention, that as much as I love black cars, they are a bitch to keep clean. But oh so worth it when they are clean.

Do you also find the chrome rim is hard as to keep shiny?

After two days of driving its back to looking like brushed aluminium

Give it a few years, stone chips are a bitch, my car is covered in little tiny scratches that stand out when your up really close, i have to wash my car every 2nd or 3rd day to keep it clean:(
Black cars FTW but, they look so much more stylish.
There is a black monaro in town with those rims i think, it looks freaking pimp, just like your car but monarolol

I imagine you're right... though they've only been on the car about a week. I've washed the car once with the rims and so far they're okay.

Yeah, they're your chops. I did a few later ones (more not included here) of my final shortlisted rims, but they're not as good as your efforts. Your "slammed 380" 'concept' was quite exceptional.

Yeah I already have a few little scratches too, but they're (so far) only tiny ones that don't stand out too much.

Wow, thanks for that awesome compliment.

And again, thanks. But no my car isn't better than anyone else's. I think all our 380s are defining examples of our individual tastes of what we like in car colors, wheels choices, etc etc.

Thanks also to the users who posted nice comments here. All the feedback is appreciated.

Lastly I hope this thread inspires other newer 380 owners visiting AMC to modify their rides, just as the pioneering users here inspired me.
Mod your cars and post the pics!

man that looks soooo good, especially the side-on shot. Very gangsta!
Love the spoiler!

A VRX or Platinum front bar w/ foggies would really set it off

MURDERED OUT: When a vehicle has both black paint and black aftermarket wheels.

Hmmm, haven't heard that one before... but it sounds good; I certainly like my black!
Saw your profile pic... it appears you like the black theme too.

Okay so I've officially signed up to this new division now. I might one day get a set of the VRX headlights - further murdering out my blackened theme - if good price. I've seen some Series 3 SXs (?) which have VRX/GT headlights but model standard tail-lights. That would do me, as I don't want to change my lip spoiler.

Another question... since I've been driving my car on 19s for about six weeks now, I've found the ride very nice and noticably better than the previous 16s. In years gone by, people said any wheels 18+ will feel like rigid wagon wheels. Fortunately that is not the case; the 19s are firmer, but I like that.
Anyhow, the question... about 10+ years ago I put 17s on my VL Calais (which looked enormous back then) and always experienced a thing my mechanic called 'tram-lining' (or something... can't remember now) wherein the new wheels (typically too big for your car) tend to follow all contours and lines in the road, and usually jerking the steering wheel around a little too. So I was wondering, why did 17s do that back then but 19s don't do it now? Not that I miss it or want it back... just curious. (Hmmm 19s on the VL would have looked very nice...)

I used to get that on my severely lowered turbo machine back years ago, I think it might be more to do with the wheel alignment geometry rather than the tyre profile. New cars, new technology maybe?? .... better steering geometry????

it's called tram tracking (close) basically when you have larger wheels on a car + lowering, usually older style of cars with cheaper tyres on, they follow the lines in the road as you have stated, the name came about back in the day when they used to have trams running through major cities. Thank god they got rid of them it really made the town feel really ****ty. The only reason i can think of that your car doesn't do it is because of newer technology within the tyre industry, different front end setup and more weight on the front wheels, while i think of it another contributing factor is tyre pressure, ever driven with a flat tyre or one low on psi?

Yeah 'tram tracking', knew it was something like that. Hence, your car seemingly following the road on its own, like a tram. And yeah the car was very low too. I think back then for that design of car, 17s were considered very big. I recall reading that even with 18s you needed to roll the guards.
I think you're right with the newer technology. A lot of elements in car design has changed in 20 years (from the '86 VL to my '06 380).
