Hi all,
At my last service, mitsu said I need to have my throttle body cleaned (cost ~$130). So I thought to myself, a number of you guys have replaced your TB's so it shouldn't be too hard to take mine off & clean it.
Told the service rep not to do it, but asked if I can buy the TB gasket from them for when I do it myself, which was met with an arrogant laugh and "nah mate, once you start tinkering - thats when things go wrong. Leave it to the qualified mechanics out the back who know what they're doing"... Thought "FU, prick!" and left.
So, is it really that difficult?? I like to work on my own car as much as possible, not only to save the cash but also to learn different types of basic maintenance.
This is turning into a novel.. my Q's are: when, how and why should a TB be cleaned?

Hardest part is taking the water feed lines off. Apart from that its pretty easy. Just dont fiddle with anything.... Give the butterfly a good clean with some carby cleaner and a fine toothbrush.... just be carefull nnot to force any gunk down the holes... :D
Oh and they prolly need cleaning every (@ a guess) 50thou.... would be good. but prolly every 100 or when the timing belt is done...

Btw, you wont need a new gasket as well, the original one should be fine, BEJ1OS has changed his TB 15 times 9not exaggerating) and his original gasket is still sweet.

oh cool, so no other replacement parts needed?
High flowed TB eh.... how are they on fuel? Nah but I don't wanna part with the $130 as it is :D
high flowed TB is the best mod you could do for the money. My fuel consumption improved by about 1.5l/100km
mine was a bit sticky after not driving the car for a while, went spoke to my mechanic and gave me a spray that cleans it, just had to pull the rubber intake pipe of the TB, spray it in.
carb cleaner does the job well

I'm going to hazard a guess and say that is probably what our friends at the mitsu service center were going to charge me 130 for. Schmucks.

$130, that'd be nice. Check my signature out for the High Flowed Throttle Body link, in the 1st post you can have a look at the instructions for installing the HFTB. That'll give you a solid idea on what to expect when performing the removal/clean. The gasket is a metal one, and is reusable. Even one's I've got that have creases in them seal perfectly once reinstalled on my car.
Free trick is to not overtension the bolts when reinstalling as it's possible to strip the thread from the manifold. Nip tight is fine, you'll be right.
It's a cakewalk, have fun! :D
