Hey guys, long time lurker but just got manually approved :D
Now i've been looking around for a long time at 12" subs.
I've come to the conclusion that i won't go over $400ish for the sub alone.
I've got my eye on the Alpine type R but after doing some searching i'm thinking i could get something better for the same price.
What are some other subs in this price range i should be looking at?
Thanks in advance guys.

Just googled and came up with nothing.
Do you mean the JL W7?
Or Kicker L7?
Or something else? haha.

Thanks righty!
That's definitely an option now.
Does that '700 nom' mean RMS?
If so that's 200 watt more than the alpine for an extra 40 bucks ;)
Would the SQ be much different to the alpine?
nominal is RMS yes.
he musta meant Kicker considering you couldnt get a W7 for anything less than about $600 second hand atm
plenty of choise, too much to mention, go hoon around some audio stores and listen until you find one you like with ideal specs for your requirements (box size, impedence, power handling etc). Just try not to get too sucked in by all of the salesman jargon, the product at each store is always the best, make up your own mind and you will be more satisfied

Im currently running the Alpine Type R you mentioned and its being run by an Alpine MRP-850, and i highly recommend it.
The Type R is a good sub IIRC its good for 1500W Peak 800WRMS at 1ohm and 600WRMS at 2ohm (if im wrong someone will correct me i hope)(or you can look it up)
I dunno what either of these items retail for but i paid alot less than that from the Alpine dealer :D

Yeah i thought it was 500wrms.
Well i live near Bendigo in Vic and there's only 1 car audio shop here other than Autobarn and Supercheap and i've been in there plenty of times.
I may have to put a day aside to go to browsing Melbourne.
Also is it better to go the 2ohm or 4ohm option when i can?

If your talking about the Alpine one i suggest the dual 2ohm rather than the dual 4ohm, it takes a much more powerful amp to drive the sub at 8ohms. And noone has ever been able to tell me an advantage yet :D

Thanks Kieran.
I've always been confused about that.
Let's say i buy the alpine dual 2ohm rated at 500wrms.
I would need and amplifier that puts out about 500wrms at 4ohm yes?

If you wire the voice coils in series, it presents an 8ohm load, if you run them in parallel, it presents a 2ohm load.
If you run a dual 2 ohm in series, it's a 4ohm load, in parallel, 1ohm load.

Bingo, also note that everything i know about this sort of stuff was learnt from here and the members on here. Some of these guys really know their stuff.

Presenting a 1ohm load was the problem we first encountered when installing mine, turns out the amp wasn't 1ohm stable lol
So what is the advantage of the dual 4ohm? More power? Better SQ? and how does this relate to amp choice?
SupremeMoFo
18-08-2008, 07:20 PM
The advantage of the dual 4ohm is that you can give the amp a 2ohm load which any amplifier can do, and invariably an amp will produce more power on a 2ohm load than 4ohm (for example, my Clarion APX1300 - 300WRMS into 4ohm max, 400WRMS into 2ohm max).

Thanks suprememofo very informative :)
Looks like i'm searching for a dual 4 ohm then.
if you happen to want to go 10" (plenty of bass if your worried it will be too quiet), ive got an Alpine Type X 10" D4 brand new lying around i never got around to installing, still might, but im advertising it for $400, if it sells it sells, if it doesnt ill install it.

Cheers for the heads up, i'm fairly sure i'll stay with a 12" but i'll definitely think about it.
Not much of a fan of Kicker either for some reason :(

when choosing either dual 4ohm or dual 2 ohm its always best to have an idea what amp your going for...some amps are stable at 1 ohm and if you get the dual 4 then you might only be using half the power

Great subs, but 1 big problem (or so I was told by the last place I went to), if you don't install it in their box design (which is on their website) you void all warranty.

DD, Peerless, RE audio
Essentially, anything you've never heard of, its generally good.
Peerless make great subs, heard it in a BMW E30 that AutObarn Penrith made.
Rips
i have the alpine R-series running off the alpine v-12 mono block that its designed to be run off. i also have it in the alpine box so its running exactly as it was designed to and it sounds like a dream...a very loud, deep bassy dream. im not saying its the best ever, but i love alpine gear and anyone who looks at the ICE in my car will see that. i can promise you wont be disapointed.

i'd love for you to pm me who said that if you don't mind,
you can fit a DD sub to any box and still have warranty, my works spl car is running dd and we are a dd dealer, and i know the import really well, and he has told me this is not true,

I am corrected then! I wasn't too keen on this guy as I paid money for him to tune my system, which the very next day I retuned myself because it was so bass heavy, and i go a bad taste because he seemed to love the Sony subs.
I may consider a DD later then as I do like them and that was the sole thing that put me off :)

I'm going to a shopping center tomorrow which has a JB HIFI so i might end up impulse buying the Alpine type r and MRP-M500 amp.
I didn't really want to go with a whole heap of Alpine gear in my car but what can you do?
Does anyone know any car audio shops that deal DD gear in central Vic?
Would the equivalent DD sub be much better than the alpine?

DD > Alpine
Autobarn's sell DD, apart from that no idea.

Motorequip also do DD now but they are rip off merchants.
FHRX (used to be a site sponser.. still is????) also sells DD and he is very helpful.

Well well, if I was you I would be confused.
1st of all, what amp are you choosing to run with this woofer?
Does the $400 include a box?
Perhaps we may start with that and narrow it down. All I will say is that Vibe are back in Oz! :D If anyone has listened to a Vibe Space in a CBR box you will know why I am excited.

Thanks for all the responses guys, i ended up buying the alpine type r sub and 500w mono.
Got it for $700 all up which is alright.
I know alpine isn't the best but it's not the worst either and it's somewhere to start :)
I also got an 8 gauge wiring kit, will this be okay?

I'm sure that will be ok. As long as you go the DVC 4ohm version it will work fine.
8ga will be enough for you as I highly doubt you will need more than 55A for normal music from your charging system for the sub. :D
Are you going to do the install yourself?
J-Flo

Yeah i got the dual 4ohm :)
And yeah i'm about to attempt the installation now, i've never done it before but hopefully everything will work out.

so long as you dont do what i did, i pulled off the heater knob while trying to get to the head unit and one of the gears fell off, then i had no heater in winter till i pulled my finger out and rang an aircon specialist to fix it...
