View Full Version : What sort of power should i be putting out
I have sloooowly started modding the magna, just trying to get the best out of a good engine really. I have the EZ Boy throttle body, and a high flow muffler but FWD and 4sp auto. Other than the slightly notchy auto at the moment, it feels much quicker than it should be.
I have been running these couple of extra mods for only a few weeks but was quite shocked at the kick-down last night when overtaking, no torque steer just damn good seat-pushing acceleration. Compared to standard, it feels twice as fit and definately happier to push hard past 5000rpm. I have been in my fair share of fast cars as a passenger, but the magna felt truly quick in-gear on cold nights. It dog**** off the line, but very impressive on kick-down.
So how much power should i be nudging with only those basic changes?

Don't have the EZboy throttle body, just a lukey muffler and RPW style CAI and I got 109.4kw at the wheels from my 3L Auto.

Probably the same or close to a TH Sports with the free flow zorst making most of the difference....Throttle body ?

Dyno TH sports
oh yeah of course running the obligatory K&N panel filter too :bowrofl:
impressive dyno readout. V8 must have been the old 5.0. V6 commo, is that 90 ATW??

If you do dyno test it, don't be disheartened if the power figures aren't as high as you expected.
What the mods have done is given more driveability across the rev band, meaning the engine is more willing to create power at different rpm levels as opposed to just a select band.
Here's my dyno readout:

Lol that spike is the auto kicking down because its an asshole.

yeah i am not likely to get it dyno'd, thats just a waste of time and money on a car like mine. I know it drives well and dont need a piece of paper to tell me otherwise.
Just curious as to what i am putting out over the 155kW standard figure. I guess after age and general wear/tear i wouldnt be suprised if the engine is still on 155kW WITH mods

In the end it all depends on the individual dyno and how it's been set up. My car made 103 kw atw with only a cat back and K&N panel filter (this is a 3.5L auto).
Power figures don't mean anything. More important is power delivery and how it can be used. Sure your car could make 150 kw atw but if this is at 6000 rpm how usable is that gonna be? I know bad example but i think you get my point.
But yeh dyno power figures are good for bragging to your mates lol

Gotta agree with Mohit here....it's all about how that power comes on not the killerbees. With the high flow exhaust on my TH I found I had lots of good bottom end torque .... knocking this car around on windy dirt roads was.....:D

Magna00 had these mods B4 he got his charger and got 115 atwkw
i think a good guest for your car would be between 110 and 115 but as Mohit said "Power figures don't mean anything. More important is power delivery and how it can be used."
i think this sentence sums it up perfectly.
cheers guys, yeah it drives brilliantly on tight twisty roads with the little extra bottom end grunt from the TB. WHY OH WHY didnt mitsu make them like that from the factory
On another note, i am AMAZED at ez boys results from his new plenum, 390Nm torque peak in one fat slab

Right, my '02 D, with 20K miles, made 115KW at the wheels with no mods other than
removing the air filter element for that dyno run.
If you guys aren't getting at least that with your 3.5L motors, I'd say that something is fishy...

Probably due to a very happy dyno.

Do you really think so? The 3.5l is rated at 205hp/235tq so a measured 154 is a 25% drive train loss, which seems about right.

yeah sounds about right, and his should be the s2 motor so should be the 163kw flywheel figure motor.

True, i forgot about the extra kw the S2 made.

let's get a couple of things straight here...
Paul would have the standard 2002+ 3.5L which makes 155kw/208hp stock (at the flywheel), not 163kw... unless it's a VR-X model with the better flowing muffler (which I dont think it is).
25% drivertrain loss sounds about right. I believe these auto 'boxes drop about 25-30%.
a typical unmodified 3.5L auto would usually pull around 100-115kw atw. I would suggest that removing the air filter probably increased Paul's numbers a little bit, but it's still within the range I would expect from this engine/transmission.
cybermonkey, assuming that you have the 3.5L with those mods I'd expect your numbers to be within the range of 110 - 120kw atw.
of course, as people have alluded to, you could go to one dyno and get 100kw, then head up the road and get 120kw.
cheers,

K&n pod filter in the engine bay
redback 2.5" cat back exhaust
everything else stock
actually i was running on E10 ethanol fuel that week also..
118kw @ wheels..
thats from my 3.5 KJ Verada.
now she has the EZboy T/B (sorry Ian i still haven't sent yours back! :( )
X-force extractors (soon to be replaced with Pacemakers)
2.5" stainless highflow metal cat
thermal gaskets (inlet manifold)
soon will either be replaceing the K&n hot air induction pod with all the factory stuff, or changing the location of the filter
shouldn't effect WOT but it has a new O2 sensor, which has reduced drone significantly on partial throttle and livened it up a little..
yet to run it again.. once i get around to fitting the pace's (after i modify them) i'll run it again.. too many projects on the run at the moment..

there you go.. i think i just confirmed Wook's post..
with minimal mods i've pretty much hit that benchmark.. of what they are 'spose too' make.. :)
