I have a '93 TR 2.6 carb. wagon.

After the last service I had done on the car, I was getting around 13 litres/100km, resulting in about 450km per tank. As of late, I've noticed that the fuel consumption is gradually getting worse. At the moment I'd be lucky to get 300km from a full tank of premium fuel.

I've done a lot of searching both here and all over the web for solutions to my problem, however, I've only managed to find threads created by other people with similar troubles and no real answers.

After driving I'm noticing a rich fuel smell from under the bonnet and the exhaust pipe. I also noticed when recently changing the air filter that the old filter had a strong fuel smell and was slightly "oily" to the touch. There is also a black residue built up around the air filter and down the side of the engine block near the alternator.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Following the fuel line to the carby, is there any external petrol staining?
What sort of choke does the carby 2.6 run?

id change the oxygen sensor, your plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor and then get a good tune. plenty of threads about this around

uh, it's a carby, there is no oxygen sensor :p
first thing i'd check is leads, plugs, distributor (often can get crap on it after awhile so cleaning with a toothbrush and some cleaner or some kind can help) and also your coil. My fual concumption has gone back up again for some strange reason but went down after i changed the coil. Bad fual consumption on a carby is generally something to do with the ignition system. Just check for spark on all plugs, test your leads with a voltmeter and the dizzy you'll just have to clean and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't get better then it's either your dizzy or some other part you haven't checked yet :p
