Hey all,

i come to you with a question, well more of a mystery.

For those who dont know i drive a 95 TS magna v6 with factory manual (more details look at thread in my sig). about a month ago i started getting a knocking from the front left corner, but it only happens under very specific situations. i have to be turning left with the wheel between 9 and 11 and i have to be accelerating. the knocking increases with speed.

so i took it up to my local mech, whom i trust and have been using since i was 15 and asked him to have a look. He thought it might be the CV but that is in top shape and all the rubbers appear to be ok. that said i know his 'ok rubber' can sometimes be a bit lax.

so we are both stumped. i have had the car up on the chasis stands and cant see anything that stands out but that said im not really sure what im looking for, being more of an ICE guy.

any thoughts would be a great help

To test the cv,turn to full lock and drive in a circle,if it is infact the cv,it should knock and click etc under these conditions,if it doesnt, most likely something else, but dont let rubbers full you,its the bearing/joint behind the rubber that lets go,even if it looks all new on the outside!

Id be getting the ball joints looked at as well as the strut mounts and maybe even tie rods, take it to a suspension workshop is my advice,as these all can cause "knocking"

i'd ask him to check the wheel bearings, or you could check them yourself. just jack the car up under the lower control arm, then grab the wheel left hand on the top of the tyre and right hand on the bottom of the tyre (or visa versa) and try to twist the wheel in opposite directions e.g. move hands in opposite direction as quick as you can, if you have any more than about 1mm of play then thats a good sign they're on the way out. If this is the case you wont be able to re pack the grease they are to far gone.

check your strut mounts,
if you dont know where they are, theyre at the top of your struts, easily seen when you open the bonnet. one on each side

mine were knocking alot, changed them over and problem solved

Ok, i know this is a thread mine, but hey, its mine and its still the same problem so i figure what the hell.

I am still getting this knocking sound. so far i have eliminated CVs, ball joints and all bushes as all are brand new items. I am taking the car back to my trusted mech in the week and i would like to have some more idea as to what it could be. I know why wheel bearings are on their way out cos they squeek and whinge but i cant see them making this knocking noise. but the fact that its rotational (increases with speed) is pushing me towards something like them. or dare i say it, the steering rack :(

big 4 also mentioned the strut tops which appear to be fine, but that said im not really sure what im looking at.

any other ideas. to refresh your memories and update its a knocking noise from the front end when turning left under power (accelerating) when the wheel is between 8 and 11. since i replaced all the gear its got firmer and kinda worse which worries me a bit

cheers

shock absorbers knock when worn/faulty...

Just because the strut tops look ok, doesn't mean they are. Also, as above, worn shocks will knock and carry on.

I would say shocks or strut tops, as said already, take it to a suspension specialist and they should be able to pinpoint the problem pretty quickly
