I had to go out to Laverton yesterday and saw maybe a dozen silver 380 that looked to be brand new at Fowles Auctions Altona. You can see em from the Freeway and they look great.

I brought a 380 VRX in black for my wife for her birthday,ex-Cop car,has the large induction mod and cover was removed from engine and is LSD equipped.Goes well,it was suggested at the time that i should buy it and i did,16k.
I was popular with her for about a week,a new record.
OVER the next few weeks il post some picks of the "TRIFECTA OF TORMENT"
98 SPORT,TJ VRX AND THE 380 VRX

Well done, good purchase there. Post some pics! An unmarked police car, I assume, being black. Interesting to see some of the same mods as being pioneered by AMC. Anything else that you can see different? I wonder if they changed the muffler too. Perhaps they'd been reading these forums.

The 380's that are SX or VRX 90% of these are Ex-rentals. The others are Ex-Gov or repos same with sum VRX SX's. My Guess is that most of them will be non buy backs from Avis or Budget renta car so they sell them instead of them going back to the dealer. I bought my magna from budget 4 years ago and never had a prob and i knew its history as i worked for them back then.

Hey MightyMag!

You may be uniquely qualified to answer an ages-old question in my mind: Buying a Former Rental Car.......

is this a good idea cos its a quite-new car, sold at certain (low) KM's reading, always been serviced by-the-book ?

OR

is this a bad idea cos anyone who rents a car thrashes and mistreats it, so cars have had a terrible run from "test" drivers, or bad drivers ?

Since you have worked for car rental mob, AND have personally bought an ex-rental car, what is your opinion? Did you find any problems with the car you bought that were unexpected given its age and use? Do car rental companies give cars ordinary servicing, more-cautious servicing, or "servicing, whats-servicing?").

Enquiring minds want to know!

I HIGHLY recommend buying a rental over a private buy, They may have 10 to 15 thousand kays more but they are big highway km's but they always serviced, and Cleaned. But B4 buying any car have it inspected by your mechanic who service your car Not Ract, Racv, NRMA, RACQ or any of those big companies just dribble shit all the time.

If you hire a car you know the drill. Rental cost, damage Excess Which is normally $2750 which can be reduced down but it still cost you a extra $24 perday on top of your rental so you aint going to thrash or damge it to throw away all that money

Personally, I disagree with purchasing a rental. I know of a Mitsubishi that was never serviced as a rental and shortly after entering private ownership the oil pump became clogged and stoped pumping oil at about 48,000. The original oil was never changed as a rental and this was proved after examination of the hand book.

This vehicle required a new engine due to the extent of the damage.

This type of engine damage is not covered by the warranty, as it is owner negligence at fault. Unfortunately you can not make the original owner the rental company pay the eventual damages.

Well I see. The 3 Large rental places all Service there cars within 2000kms of them needing to be serviced. It may have been a smaller Rental place that lease the cars and then stamp the booklet saying that they have done it, I know i worked in Brisbane with a rental company who did that and i was out the door within a month .

The car involved was from one of the big 3 rental places. Perhaps this example escaped their usual controls, however I have been wary since this happened.

Thankfully it was not my car.

We had a MY06 Outback from a certain company that rents out Subarus a couple of years ago. It hadn't had its 5000km service at 9000kms on the odo. The 5000km service was a one off, introduced to help prevent the 2.5L engines in the 4th gen Liberties/Outbacks consuming oil - in some cases, consuming so much they wouldn't make it to the next (12,500km) service interval.

Ahhh, the rental vs private debate.....ive owned my fair share of cars over the years, my best and worst were both rentals.I dont think it matters, the bloke who swears he would never buy a rental will be the first to knock down the door of his mitsi dealer when they advertise their $13990 2 yo 380 pick a colour. Prob wouldnt even know where it came from.
BTW your larger franchise dealers will generally get the best cars as they pay more/have first dibs, then the smaller, then the family owned ones. You just have to know your dealer heirarchy in your town.
I buy all my cars from a broker, my last purchase, an ex rental 06 corolla I found at auction, called him, he checked it out and gave me the all clear......saves making a poor choice......
I know a few dealers in my area who either buy a lot of ex smash cars or buy real cheap outback renters which are crap, but it must depend who their buyer is.....
