Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today Dan (Trotty) and I installed the highflow secondarys, and new pre-cat piping to my car, along with a new exhaust. After much cursing and swearing, grease (will fix that soon), oil and burns we scratch build a set of these babies. All i have to say is WOW.
The gains as was expected in Trottys first thread were discussed, but unlike his auto in my manual you can really push them to their peak. The best part of the drive (had to wait till i was on the highway, for fear of blowing gaskets) was the 200% improved rolling accelleration, even in 5th at 100 on the M2 with a plant of the foot, it still manages to kick off.... best improvement was made to 3rd gear and the pull from it was a lot smoother and felt much clearer, pulls hard from 2/3000RPM all the way to 6000 and probably beyond (had to slow for corners). Anyhow, thanks very much to Dan for putting up with me for the day, and a generally fun time! Big plug to Custom Pipeworks, Trottys own Company, this mod is absolutely gold for anyone wanting to up the gains of the V6 by a few kw's...Will have her Dyno'd soon to get some results.
Cheers,
Adz.
P.S. Dan will post pics as soon as the camera is recharged. lol

Hey TROTTY have you got any hints on where to buy stainless doughnuts or cast bends? Ive come up with nothing, no one around here seems to stock anything bigger then what one would use for radiator pipe...
Ive resorted to mandrelling straight pipe into bends but am sick of the effort getting the tighter and longer bends done... factor in 5 times the welding as im sure your aware.
Ive rung stainless steel warehouses and suppliers ad none seem to wanna help. Ive gotten some good prices from the net but once i factor in shipping from the NT its a waste of time but asadly its the best (only) avenue so far.
Ive rung local exhaust shops and fabricators, and both these places can get what i want but dont stop short of adding excessive markup to the supply price. $120 for a 2.5"ID 2.0mm wall 6"radius doughnut just doesnt do it for me.
Oh and by the way, awesome, awesome work.

how much does said exhaust cost?
[TUFFTR]
23-08-2008, 04:21 PM
Now thats some nice welding!
Mine looks crap compared to that! (it really does) But does the same thing.
Yeah its one of the best mods you can do to a 2nd gen performance wise, Just lets the engine breathe that bit more it NEEDS to
Great work!

said exhaust costs $500 in parts and then a payment for Trottys expertise, in cash and sexual favours! Deff, best mod so far!

Mine wasnt that much but i guess you get what you pay for. How do you get the welds so smooth? Is it basically angle grind them down?
Mine are all lumpy and such and my exhaust is only 2 bolts away from me dropping it down.

It was $450 for the front section fitted....and the new muffler was a bit more with fitting....
Oh and the welds... well thats just a secret you learn after 12years welding.... haha NO Angle grinding there mate!
I get my bends from MIDWAY http://www.midwaymetals.com.au/

Sorry dude... But most of those welds have been fused with the tig welder.... just with a slight weave... no filler. On the flanges there is filler added. Happy now. @ sec lesson!lol

Looks realyl good.
Any reason you put the flex pipe between the front and rear pipe as they are bolted to the manifold either way and do not need to move.

Im pretty sure we were just copying the original setup as for the flexes, the main advantage is the first bank comes in from an angle, rather than a T intersection. Trotty can prolly give a better answer...

Yeah its called heat expansion.... its there from the factory, the last thing i want is for it to crack the manifolds.

i too have wondered why there was a flexpipe between the manifolds on the front bank front pipe but hey now we all know.
hope the new pipes serve you well ADAMJ

May i ask what other engine work is being carries out?
If your sticking with the SOHC, They are getting some *** decent times in the US with some major headwork.

yeah sticking with the SOHC, next on the list of things to do is fix the CV's coz its bleeding oil and service the gearbox, then for the fun bitz ive got a haltech interceptor lined up...they dyno it then so ill see what figures are coming out of her then. What were these stock?? Ive done enough to probably make the first dyno a bit higher than stock...As for future work, we'll see, with a little more money put in that little piggy bank my aim was to get the intercooled supercharger from raptor....but thats a little way off yet...lol at least of got a good front bar for it!

Yeah but that kit is for a 3rd gen so no chance it'll fit!
I reckon get some massive cams, cam gears and valve springs from the US.
In the 3000GT's turboed they run mid 13's:shock:

I gave them a call, they put me under the impression that it was for any of the 3L SOHC engines??? So i was like sweet, that was the thought behind that...thats poor form if they're telling ppl different ****...

Well I'm not going to talk for them but the engine are completely different setup wise.
I would give them another call and tell them its for the 12v SOHC V6 in the TR-TS magnas...
Just saying that as I dont think there target audience was the 2nd gen magnas, only the 3rd gens magnas

yeah true dat...mind you, i wouldnt have thought it took much difference with the charger placement, they may need to shift the engine to the side to fit the pipes, even if its the opposite orientation...

The supercharger itself could be made to fit, But would all need to be custom pipes. I guess if you drove to the shop and had a look at a kit you might be able to see if it could fit. Id probably get the charger and have pipes made up myself

yea, lol pity the shop is in QLD, they may have a branch here ill have a call around, if they can give a decent price on the kit, i can get my mech to hook us up with some pipes, lol maybe trotty can even ablige!

yeah damn front bar...... i told you i hate workin on lowered cars, had to pre ramp the pre ramps!lol
EDIT:You know the pipework is no problem dude!

Mate it seems you have a business, I dunno what it is but your metal work is actually very decent, you need to speak up a bit more lad and put me in the picture a bit more about your talents/business
:)
The Raptor kits ONLY fit 3rd GEN V6 3.0 SOHC and V6 3.5 SOHC. There may well have been some misunderstanding on my part to the caller but essentially there has never been any plan for 2nd GEN.

aw damn, lol thanks for clearing that up mate, i was just getting my hopes up silently...
I can deffinatly vouch for the awesome pipework done on the exhaust, deffinatly a top job!

The heat expansion on the short length that is there would be negligable, when I did my engine pipe I took out the front flex pipe and gave it the flick. It made no difference at all and had no effect on either the manifolds or the gaskets.
Pacemaker have no flex pipe between the headers either from memory, again no issue.
Not haveing a go, just would make your life easier and cheaper not to have it

What would you prefer? somthing thats going to last? or somthing that might have troubles down the road... for the extra $50 for the flex, it actually makes my job easier by not having two rigid points to line up.
And paccies are all about PROFIT! I like to do a good qulity job over cost!
And all my customers are more than happy with MY work.

I'm with Trotty on this one.
There are very good reasons for Mitsubishi to have gone to the trouble of putting a flex joint into the front downpipe.
Trotty is, quite correctly, using good automotive design and manufacturing practice to give his customers a long lasting quality job.
1) Tolerances - of the engine and the pipe manufacturing process
2) Heat expansion.
If there is a solid assembly, then in 99% of cases it will have to be distorted to fit into place. Add heat cycling and vibration then they will speed up the failure of the weakest point in the system.

Not having a go at you mate, just my opinoin backed by many years of experience in building both street cars and race cars.
If they were needed, pacemaker would put them there to save from warranty claims.
This being the case, all v8's would have them as they have 2 banks collecting into one bank and then eventually into one or two pipes with a balance pipe? Rotaries would also need them both on the extractors and when the standard thermal reactor is used as the heat is even greater again. Subaru is another prime example.
As for fitting, all I can say is crap! The heads and block do not move, the manifolds are square to the flange so the pipe would go straight on.
Not saying that Trotty is dozing his customers, the workmanship is very good. (be good if you were a sponsor mate so other members could benefit from these here :) )
End of the day it is personal choice and nothing more than that, my personal choice is not to waste my time and money.
The job you to is however top rate, anyone with a second gen should look to getting this done at your local shop as I did it years ago to my rada and made a huge difference both to econoimy and also power range
Trotty

Ok when your talking about extractor systems on V8 (and the V6 partners) and the lack of flex/expansion joints, there is alot more pipework to flex and give between the banks during the heating process.
I have two solid objects, the CAST manifold's either side of the block. add heat in the middle and you have an expanding peice of metal....do you want to take the risk of cracking the Cast manifolds?
It is preference... Any body reading and interested, i will give this option to SAVE a few bucks... but i wont warrant it...sorry.
I Enjoy criticism because it makes for a better product for evryone.. If somone has any valuable info or reccomendations i'll gladly listen.
