OK, so we already have 2.5" piping. Rather than getting a 2.5" Redback catback, would it be more worthwhile to get a resonator cut out and a new high flow muffler instead?

The resonators are there more to control noise than anything else. Seeing as you have a Sports, that means you've already got a high flow muffler.

What you might be better off doing is installing a high flow catalytic convertor, and a set of Pacemakers or similar extractors.

High flow muffler by Mitsubishi's definition though...

Looking toward naturally aspirated vehicles, the TH-early TJ series Mitsubishi Magna 3.5 suffers massive backpressure from its rear muffler. Recognising this, Mitsubishi's TJ Sports and VR-X models are equipped with a higher flowing - though noisier - replacement muffler. This muffler alone is responsible for much of the Sport/VR-X's 13kW (9 percent) power hike.

Unfortunately, however, vehicles such as the Magna TJ Sport/VR-X leave little scope for future exhaust improvements - the factory has already been there to search for power.

Hmph... might look into a high flow cat then.

Apparently the stock catalytic converter isn't a significant restriction to the exhaust... I'd be looking at changing your extractors, the stock extractors are a horrendous design.

Dammit! Most expensive option. Righto, will do pod filter and air intake first then I think. Cheers.

Extractors and bigger flex pipe, thats where almost all of the restriction is. The stock flex pipe is only 2.25", i think a 2.5" can be had for $100 or there abouts

I guess this is the cheapest I'll get them?

Pretty much. Pacemakers seem to start about the $520 mark, then RPW at about $660.

Are you after noise or power?

Dont forget that Pacemakers dont include the flex pipe section.

Also, the RPW flex pipe section is apparantly pretty crap, and really needs to be replaced.

Yep, it's practically worthless out of the box. It's a single braid flex pipe, and buzzes loudly under load.

Cheers for the advice guys!

Both. Power takes priority though. I'm sticking on a pod filter anyway which should add a fair bit of noise under acceleration and that's when it matters - partly for me and partly for scaring/irritating people (long story).

Ok, what you'd be best off doing is getting yourself a set of either HM Headers or Pacemakers, a 2.5 or 3" cat, and 2.5" piping followed by 1 or 2 resonators, and a straight through muffler.

This setup seems pretty much ideal for a stock compression and cam 3.5, with a decent sounding idle and load note, and good power.

Unfortunately it's not cheap - my exhaust cost me $2200.

Ah, there's more plans than that in the future. I want to put it on LPG then make all the appropriate modifications (cams, ECU, etc) to extract what LPG has to offer...

I hope you are getting a sequential gas injection setup, you would be VERY silly to get a mixer system and spend all that money on exhaust and cams, ecu etc when you will get way more power from just getting injected gas. Never mind the better economy, tuneability, smoothness, reliability, lack of backfire etc etc.

WHAT! Im pretty sure HRD2GT payed 1295 for pacemakers, supercat high flow cat and 2.5inch redback system and a high flow muffler with a 4 inch tip.

I got ceramic coated RPW Race headers, which cost $1000 shipped, and the fitting and rest of the system was $1200.

I could've gotten away with it for a lot less, but made a mistake going for the RPW headers, and the exhaust shop wasn't as cheap as others, but the quality of the work was worth it.

Though pacemakers do not provide a flex pipe, they do however modify the orignal engine pipe by cutting the front section off and welding a flange plate onto the flex pipe section then using it to connect the extractors to the cat.

OllieActually wanted to go dedicated gas so yes of course injection.

Cool, I was thinking about going along the same route, but just getting duel fuel injected instead. Would be interested to know how it all goes, keep us posted.

I bought these, from the same eBay vendor. Fitted a treat and gave me a noticeable performance increase - you can feel it. Sounds better, too, although not such a noticeable difference.

Your best bang for your buck is a pod filter coupled with a cold air intake. The sound of the induction growl never gets old.
