Hi all,
I've just replaced the head gaskets, and much to my disappointment after lining up the all the timing marks with piston 1 at TDC, i've got alot of noise from the heads :S. Now i forgot to mark the belt up when i pulled it off however, i wasnt' too concerned as i had to pull all the entire heads apart.
There were marks on it from when the mech at ultra tune put the new belt on about 56,000km ago. The marks he had on the belt on the right sprocket were three marks forward from the timing mark on the side of the sprocket.
Does this mean he advanced the timing ?
If so i think i have to pull the belt off again and pull both sprockets back 3 teeth.
Either way i need to get this sorted its far to noisy. The weird thing is i've taken it for a drive and i haven't lost power.
Also under high RPM after putting new gasket goo on the upper sump for the 3rd time it's still leaking :@, is there an after market gasket you can buy or will i just have to make one ?
Cheers guys your help would be much appreciated.

Well so far i can conclude its the tappets, but as far as i can tell its just alot of noise from the heads :S More than before i pulled it down.

do the magnas use hydraulic lifters?? if so they would need to be run for a while to pump up pressure.

No they don't have hydraulic lifters, they have hydraulic tappets however, and they can't be adjusted.
They only thing i haven't done that i can think of is clean them in deisel. I didn't see that as neccessary when doing a head gasket. :( Maybe i'll have to do that.
If anyone else has done a head gasket on a 6g72 te or tf that would be good to know if they have had similar problems.

lifters and tappets are the same mate. proper name is lifter but they get called tappets cos the old school ones with the adjusting screw, when they were out of adjustment, they made tapping noises.
As long as when no1 piston is at tdc and the timing mark is lined up on the crank pulley, and the marks are lined up on the cam pulleys then the position of the belt wont matter. It is more accurate to time it up with the crank pulley and accessory belt removed.
There are timing marks on the timing belt drive sprocket on the crank shaft. Check these marks first. Once they are timed up, turn your engine through two full revolutions(cams turn at half engine speed) and re-check your timing marks. If they are ok, turn your start your engine for a few seconds, if there is no noise, you know you have either fixed the issue, or the noise isnt coming from the heads, but from one of the accessories on the engine.

Cheers chris,
I've done all this, i'm gonna play with it a lil and move the sprockets back 1 tooth at a time to see if the sound gets quieter. Long **** way around of doing it but thats all i can come up with at this time. :(
If i've screwed anything up good reason to get a 3.5L ;)

if your timing marks line up, dont change the timing. It will be something else.

To be exact the actual name for the ( lifter/ Tappets ) is LASH ADJUSTERS I SHOULD KNOW AS I WORKED IN THE FACTORY AND WAS CONSISTENTLY RE-ORDERING THEM FOR REPLENISHMENT OF STOCK.We use to drop plenty on the floor and some would go missing ...Regards Hughy69

Be aware that the 24 valve engine has no clearance for the pistons and valves to miss each other if you do miss the timing marks when putting belt back , u will cause major damage to the valves from piston hitting them..this would make a noise . Lash adjusters (Tappets ,Hydrolic Lifters ) may need to be pumped up if they have been out of the heads for a time there are procedures for bleeding them on this site if you do a search ..It could take upto 15 min to get them bled out ..??
