Anyone have any experience with the "Commander Automatic Headlight System" available at Super Cheap for $26.
Turns headlights on and off via a light sensor on the dash.
Wiring instructions appear straight forward but interested to know of any experience with the operation of the unit.
Cheers

I was following a lexus down the M2 the other day and went under a bridge
His lights flicked on and then off and I thought that was pretty funny
Thanks for listening to my story

I had a different one made by Traxide Tronics in QLD. They no longer make them. I had it
fitted by a sparky to my old KS. It was more of a Day-Time Running Light unit which turns
on the light automatically, 10 seconds after starting up car. It also had the feature of remaining
on for 30 seconds after switching car off to light up dark carparks.
I am very interested in this product. Any links to it?

Our Tarago had this (stock/factory option).
Auto headlights are great!
I'd also be interested in peoples experiences with aftermarket versions.

No links.
Local super cheap store have had them in stock for probably 12 months.

Did that have auto lights in the sense they turned themselves on when it got dark, or in the respect that they turn themselves off when you get out of the car? Just confirming because our Camry will turn them off when you leave the car, but they won't turn off during daylight if you have them on all the time, only when you park.
I believe mohit has an aftermarket system of sorts with a manual override switch which works well. I'll see if I can find a link.
Edit:
Auto Headlight Module
While Doug was installing the alarm he also installed the DEI 545T Nite-Lite headlight automation system. Basically, it uses a photocell sensor to turn the headlights on and off based on outside ambient light. It has an over ride switch which lets you choose between automatic or manual control over the lights.
It also turns the headlights on when the windscreen wipers are engaged and also has a daytime running light feature (but both of these were disabled as I didn't want them).

Turn themselves on when it gets dark.
Also switches off lights when you turn off ignition.
Has adjustable light sensor,

They were fully auto.
You could manually switch them on or off or just leave them on Auto.
When you went into the dark - a tunnel, carport, garage, night - then switched on.
When you came out of the dark into sunlight, they switched off.
When you turned the car off, they switched off as soon as you opened the driver's door.
The ultimate for anyone who's lazy. lol

Stupid idea.

Aside from the opinion above,
I think it is a good idea. Especially with the Verada 'always on' instruments, i sometimes forget to turn on the lights.
I have two of these systems and will give one away to the person who tells/shows me how to install it with a switch into my KH as; while im normally good with wires and have the cars complete diagrams it is infathomable! lol

...Especially with the Verada 'always on' instruments, i sometimes forget to turn on the lights...The Ralliart has this 'feature' too - I thought all 3rd gen Magna's must be like this.
It can catch you out in very well lit streets or at dusk.
...I have two of these systems and will give one away to the person who tells/shows me how to install it...Can't show you but I can 'tell' you...
"Go to an auto electrician and ask him to do it"
That's how I'd do it. lol

The Ralliarts don't have the auto illuminating high-contrast dash. Only the Veradas. It is
normally black if the engine is off and the whole thing lights up when the engine turns on in
3 stages (similar to the Mazda 3 in the commercial). This can be annoying at early evening
as you think the headlights are on because the dash lights are on.
mcs_xi, I think it best if you take it to a sparky because if you stuff up the sensors, there
goes you climate control. I'd be happy to take one from you :D .

Thanks for the suggestions;
I have attached the (rubbish) wiring diagram supplied with the unit. If anyone can help it would be brilliant! (& your headlight magic box would be in the mail  ) as i would VERY much prefer to do this myself.
Unfortunately for both Puck & Vlad, I can't really classify your assistance as ....umm, assistive lol. Sorry guys.

i too want this feature BADLY!
its the only thing missing from the "verada" (or magna) "package" IMO
i was asking on here a while ago (maybe about a year now come to think of it) about doing something like that, but upon conversation with a mechanic friend of mine, he said that it wont work as the ETACS / BEM provides ground for the circuit and NOT constant, and that would result in shorts and blowing stuff up in an expensive way!

my VZ SS has auto headlights ( im pretty sure all VZ's had them) but sometimes they willc ome on in broad daylight and wont turn off unless i do so manually..
best thing i find with them is that when i approach the vehicle of a night and press unlock on my key fob, the lights come on for 30 seconds..
i can change this for how long the remain on for when i approach the car and for how long i want them to stay on after i lock and leave the car..
pretty cool but ultimatley its just for wank factor really..

even VT exec commos will turn the headlights off and on for you when you lock and unlock the car - if you left the light switch in the 'on' position.

Yeah nothing to do with safety  so far in reading this thread that is the only feature worthwhile IMHO

Possibly. Also the commodores are not auto headlight like those on the new Lancer. They
do not have a light sensor. What they have is the day-time running light system. Leave it
in auto and the system will turn it on when the engine starts and turn it off when the engine
stops. Telstra and other companys wanted DRLs for their fleet vehicles, hence Holden fitted
them to the commodore and possibly the falcon.

Wiring diagram looks relatively simple.
Only question I would have is for the additional green wire.
Does the relay circuit have a positive feed or a negative ground?

At this stage, for all who are interested,
I've spoken to a member who happens to be a sparky (and a Genuine Legend), about this install and im willing, depending on the interest, to post a 'How To' with pictures and descriptions when i proceed further (early days ATM).
So, if anyone who is not Supreme MoFo is keen on the idea, let me know.

umm my commodore's headlights are fully automatic
you can adjust the light sensitivity and the lights will come on if i go under a bridge or in a tunnel or drive inside a shed etc then turn off when i come out again..
just some days they turn on and wont go off..
On the switch there is 4 options:
Off - duh!
Park - Park lights are on when the vehicle is on, if car is turned off and door is opened, they will remain on until your set/desired time is up. Next time you turn your car on they will come on.
Low Beam - Same as park lights. This is The daytime running lights feature.
Auto - Lights come on and turn off dependant on the ambient light outside.
They do not have a light sensor.
It's in the middle of the dash.. ;)

I also have bought the auto light from supercheap. Attempted to install coupla days ago, but got stuck on where the headlight relay wire is under the dash. And also the parklight wire is proving difficult to find.
So +1 for a how to also, unless I fiqure it out before hand.

My research shows the parklight wire as green and white at the switch while the headlight wire is red and yellow.
Sure someone with more knowledge will correct me i am wrong.
Hope that helps.

Correct;
Mohit has got one.
However, with the HEadlight Commander model; I didn't have time last Wk'nd to do it. Sorry. Next one however, seems clear ATM. I have had conversations with my Sparky (Legend) mate and I have all I need for this mod So Far. As soon as the install takes place, my DIY guide will be added. Sorry again for the wait.

my golf has the auto headlights and auto adjusting for the angle according to how many people are on board.
My rada has time delay on the headlights - so they stay on for a while after you get out in the night and lock the car - gives you enough time to walk up to the front door.

As an update,
This device works well. I have installed the sensor right next to the climate sensor and you can adjust the sensitivity. Using the diagram poster earlier, i have got the unit working. but due to a faulty wire somewhere, which im currently tracing, the headlights are not automatic but the parkers are!!!
So for now the top tip i can give is to follow the diagram and use a multi meter to check the wiring before installation into the car!!!!!!!!!

Fitted the above unit as per Michaels wiring diagram.
Please note the extra green wire needs to go to power (+) to enable the headlight relay.
Unit works well.
