View Full Version : Which Spark Plugs for My Ralliart?

Hi, i've had a quick look at other threads, but can't seem to find Ralliart specific information.

car has 52,000kms on it, and i thought i should do the front plugs. i may consider doing the rear ones anyway, to keep all 6 the same.
and i might install Barry's gaskets as well.

Which plugs are recommended for me? and where from? any major differences?

Thanks

I'd just get the best, NGK Iridium's IX. You can get them on ebay too, probably cheaper if you are buying 6.

Though to be honest, if your current spark plugs are fine, im sure you wont notice a difference. But the spark plug being such a relatively cheap but vital and important part of the car, I dont like to skimp on the quality. Considering Iridiums are long lasting, they will last a very long time (something like 100K I think), though I would probably change a bit before.

They cost more because they are made from a different metal.

It depends on how often you want to change them, if you don't mind doing it more often go the cheaper ones.

Iridiums are ment to last for about 60,000km.

Spark plugs normally start a big debate with members. Iridiums are top of the line plugs (not the Plats, even though they are more expensive).

Alot of people say that Copper plugs provide the best spark. Copper plugs are alot cheaper, but, do not last very long at all.

At the end of the day, in a car like a Magna, there will be no difference between types of plugs. The only concern to you should be the price vs how often you need to change ratio.

Seeing as how the rear bank of cylinders is a bit of a hassle to change, it makes sense to go for the longest lasting ones (I'm a bit unsure about the platinum/iridium debate, seem to get conflicting info). Don't get me started on how much of a hassle the rear bank is with the Sprintex:rant:

Interestingly, I believe my original factory rear plugs weren't replaced till 88,000km, and when they were replaced there were no issues with the motor, and they actually didn't look in too bad nick. Anyone know what model the rear OE plugs are? whatever they are, they seem to last rather well.

for high-boost turbo cars, some people seem to swear by copper plugs, as apparently they give the strongest spark (handy when spark blow-out with high boost levels can be an issue).

For a near-stock magna, you really won't notice any difference between different types of plugs, unless you are replacing faulty ones with new ones. So IMO just go for something that will last well and save you the hassle of having to change them more often.

If you have FI or a serious NA build, you probably/maybe will need to run plugs of a different heat range to the OE items.

Standard ralliart plugs are BKR6EIX-11 for front and rear, standard 3.5l are BKR5EIX-11 they are a tad warmer due to being lower compression then the ralliart motor, also they last 100,000k's there warranty is for that amount of k's and if you get an english translated box it says so on the back of the plug box. Also if you order then through supercheap rather then get them off the shelf they are 15 bucks each.

for a 3rd gen 3.5 use BKR6EIX-11 front and rear. i believe in using the same plugs all round.
iridium performance = 60-80thousand and platnums are alot more expensive but will give you 100 thousand!!!

do all 6 and forget about em for 2-3 years:D

thanks

Just been following this thread with interest, but I am a little confused, are the stock plugs in the rear bank, ex factory, iridium or platinum?
The owners manual says they should be replaced at 100,000K's.
I could never figure out why Mitsubishi fitted the long life plugs in the rear bank only and not all around, just to save 30bucks?

the rears are platinums. thats how they did it.

i think it was changed with the 380, though

platinums (aka long life plugs) were fitted to the rear bank as they are a pain to replace, so in an attempt to lower service/labour fees long life plugs were placed in the rear bank.

Although unlikely to cause an issue, its just easier to replace them all at the same time, so either upgrade the front to platinums of the same type or repalce all of them with coppers, which are cheaper and do wear but if the engine is well maintained coppers will still easily see 10ooo kms before having problems, and seeing as how the platinums usually need changing before there 100oookm rating price wise there is little difference unless paying for labour (not doing it yourself)

Normally, ralliart uses cooler 6's, Standard 3'5L uses hotter 5's

Unless you are making changes that will increase combustion temps or mostly do higher average speed journeys then you can use 6's - I have moved to 6's with my mods and the plugs are a perfect colour

Cheers, Barry
