View Full Version : Lowering Paranoia

Everyone who has lowered their 380's........
How far have you lowered your car?
When you did, did you have problems with any of the following:
Camber?
Alignment? (yes I'm aware it will need adjusting regardless, but can it be adjusted to acceptable levels)
Scrubbing?
Bottoming out or hitting bump stops?
Just worried that my springs will be TOO low when they go in and I'll end up needing more work done to accommodate the lowering.
I'm running stock rims/tyres.
Call me paranoid, but I don't wanna go to the trouble and expense of getting them put in if it turns out they're not gonna work out without more work.

I had to roll my rear guards slightly but if you got stocko's you'll be ok as they don't fill the guards. Also as you go lower the wheels fold in with camber. I think mine are king springs 30-35mm lower? (dealer did it)

Check out this link for the problems I had with lowering. For some reason, I seem to be the only one on here that had drama's.

Well I'm dropping 50mm front and 35mm rear on custom springs. Just worried it's gonna cause massive headaches (already getting yelled at by the ball'n'chain)

All the time you have standard wheels/tyres, I dont think you will have a problem. I originally went to 18's without any dramas, my problems started with 19 inch wheels with 245/40 tyres. Although I havent had any more problems since getting the spacers put in, I wish I had gone custom springs but with only a 25mm drop at the rear. For some reason, the rear on the 380's sit a fair bit lower than the front.

with a 50mm drop im sure you would need some camber adjustment - i cant see personally how a drop by that much couldnt have a negative affect on camber.....
will be interesting to see sidey - keep us informed as to how you go

Does getting a wheel alignment after the car is lowered compensate for the change on camber?

No, it compensates for accidental and undesirable toe in/out.

I lowered mine with King Super Lows in front, and Lows in rear. I used this combo (which my mechanic queried at first, until he saw the result) as I noticed 380s & Magnas sit lower in the rear than the front (and I didn't want my 380 to sit uneven like my Magna did).
In real talk, I think Super Lows are about 2in or 50mm, and Lows are 1.5in or 38mm. While it looks a ton better than standard, it is definately not "slammed" and still has some wheel arch space - enough that I don't scrub the guards (though the car has never been "fully laden" yet either). When I did this, I ran with the standard 16s (with 205/60 tyres) and now have 19s (with 245/35 tyres), and still have no problems there. Though I have occasionally scraped the front tow hook on driveways if I took them too fast, so low/dipped/ramps, etc need to be taken slowly, then OK.
Unless you have a bastard downhill or uphill driveway, I'd say you'd be okay.
Overall the ride and feel is much much better after its lowered.

I know everyone has gone the superlow front, low rear look with their lowering but i went the other option and superlows all the way round, yes the front still looks higher than the rear, but it's only by a small amount and i've had to point it out to people for them to realise it.
Keep in mind no matter how low the front is it will still look weird mostly due to the size of the wheel arches they are huge in typical Mitsubishi fashion.

The only other thing with super lows on the front would be wheel travel on an undulating road. I have hit the bumpstops a few times which unsettles the car a bit but is pretty rare depends on the roads your driving on.
The rubber you use makes a difference too, I have Yokohamas which have pretty square tread while others are more rounded on the edge giving more clearance.

I don't have any issues with scraping with the front or rear ends, but then i'm pretty careful and tend to take any kind of bump at grandma slow speeds, so yeah it is an issue but nothing you can't overcome with some careful driving and just paying attention :D

Well, they're going in tomorrow, so hopefully it all works out OK
I have a bugger of a steep lip on my drive, that I used to hit with the tow hook on the magna, unless I went in on a slight angle. Figure with these, I just have to come in on a sharper angle and it should be right. I was more worried about having to get a camber kit or something.

Nah, did that in the magna, it tends to then scrape the side skirts behind front wheels. It is quite a steep nasty scoop that the council did on my street. Would buy some steel plates to reduce the slope, but I live on a blind corner, and if someone came round too close to teh gutter (and too quick) I could have a lawsuit on my hands.

Well, will have to get in contact with the supplier of my springs to give KMAC a serve on my behalf.
I ordered a 50mm drop front and a 35mm drop for rear.
After installation, the end result was a 30mm drop rear (acceptable cos they are yet to settle) but only a 10mm drop on the front!!!!!!!
Not overly impressed, but I will wait to see what their response is. If they fix it all up, then I'll just put it down to an everyday ****up, after all, we're all only human. If they don't, then I'll be VERY pissed off.
Here's the end result anyways:

Surely the guys/place that did it, can return+replace the springs as you can all confirm that 10mm is NOT 50mm. There shouldn't be any arguements or dramas there.
The back looks good though... just need to bring the front down.

The place that installed them for me have written the final drop (which they measured) on the invoice, which of course bears their letterhead. This will help if KMAC tries to be difficult about it.
The guys that installed it were fantastic, just a pity the product isn't what I asked for. Hopefully be sorted soon.

Easy Fix, remove the sticker off the rear window, looks like dead weightlol JJ
While talking to the guys who fitted my suspension, I thought about about getting SL fronts and L rears with 15 mm spacers, they said Like WTF and  and :gtfo: , I don't think anyone knows how these are setup, and we, have they the best knowledge out there, not inc. spring rates and matching shocks.
Hope they get it out fast for you, bet your missus is on your case:doubt:

She is pissed that I spent the money on lowering it in the first place :bowrofl:
She has now "put her foot down" on not letting me spend any more money on it except for tinting. Tis OK, she won't notice a K&N, Muffler or Piggyback ECU LOL

I got a question - I'm assuming those that lowered their springs also bought new wheels (or rather I don't wanna have to make a new thread). In changing the wheels from a 17 - 18, or 18-19 or so, how did you go about calibrating the speedo? Was the dealer willing to calibrate it for free or did you have to go somewhere else and pay an exorbitant amount of money?

I went from 16s to 19s, and was told if the new wheels are the same overall diameter as the originals, you don't need to do anything. Its only if you go for a bigger profile tyre than default preference for that size rim, say for better tread wear etc, that your speedo will be bumped out.

The other halves never seem to understand the joys in modifying cars. I experienced some of that putting down the foot too, after I put on 19s. Fortunately I was just about at the end of my mods list anyway. And there was a complaint about the changed muffler which is now too loud (sounds okay to me). Luckily the intake, k&n, and lowering were not detected (even though the old springs are still sitting in the garage).
Ha I got rid of mine, I can do what the hell I like

No they don't... They find the joy in you spending money on them. For example, They stop at jewelery shops to look at rings (because marriage is the be all and end all after all!) which i think is much the same as us stopping off at the local car yard looking at cars. lol But i liken having a missus to running 2 V8 cars, even if the first is a 6 they will take up those 2 pistons of slack and more than compensate with extra needs and desires... Better off being single.

I have King Springs in my 380 now and cost me $150 per pair. My mechanic/friend who did it, also put Dobson Springs in my TF Magna a few years earlier, and has said both brands are 'much of a muchness' and both come from Queensland - though I have only heard of King Springs (had them in my VL many years earlier too).
