I've just boght a copy of Ellery's "Magna / Verada (1991 - 2005) Automobile Rpair Manual". It covers the Second Gen TR /TS and the whole Third Gen range, including at least some stuff for the AWD.

Amongst other things, in the Fuel Tank & EFI Fuel Pump section it claims that "the optional 85 litre capacity long range fuel tank is available only for sedans (TE to TW)". I have never heared of this before - has anyone?? If so, does anyone have one fitted to their car?

Just curious.

I think it was fitted as one of the Police options? For police during car chases i think.

It's hard enough to afford to fill the standard tank - never mind a long range tank ! lol

Now that's interesting. Would be a useful mod to have to lower CoG and get better handling, even when the tank was part full. Hmmmmm......

That's an interesting idea. It depends exactly how they squeezed in the extra 13 Litres.

In any case, it would give a range of well over 700 km on a typically flat outback trip - could be useful in some situations.

Does anyone who used to (or still does) work for Mitsubishi know anything about this so-called option??

As i stated, you will find that is was part of the Police options for the car, gives them extra juice for when they need it.

Sorry, Wombat, I didn't mean to ignore your contribution. It just seemed even more strange than coming across an apparently "unknown" Magna option. I had trouble imagining any Police force using Magnas for prolonged pursuits!

However, maybe they simply wanted to allow for real outback distances? In which State did the Police use this option? Could anyone order it, or was it exclusive to the Police? If it was restricted to the Police, I guess that could explain why I've never seen it mentioned in Mitsubishi options lists.

If you have access to the workshop manuals, there is the option code list and there is an option for the "Police Pack" or similiar, im fairly certain it gave them the bigger fuel tank.

Read through this thread about it, this applies to 2nd Gens but it would be similar for 3rd gens i think.
Edit: Actually there is no evidence of a bigger fuel tank on it, maybe it got added on the police pack on 3rd gens, not sure but that's the only thing i can think of.

According to my Ellery's Repair Manual, the 85 L tank was only available on 3rd Gen sedans.

The Gregory's only mentions 71L in sedans and 68L in wagons. I could have sworn my wagon takes 75L.
