View Full Version : 101 3rd Gen Mod Questions
I havent really got 101 questions, but i do have a fair few.
Im just curious about many different possible 3rd gen mods i can do to my TJ Executive.
Ill get started then!
- I plan on buying parabolic headlights (Verada/VRX headlights), wheres the best place to buy them cheap and are they able to slot straight into my executive, replacing the old headlights?
- What will provide the most notable gain in handling, a rear sway bar or a front strut brace? Have read good things about both.
- Is it a good idea to try and paint the plastic strip on the side of the car, aswell as the side skirts (also plastic), the same color as the car?
- If i buy some 300/350/400w 6x9s, will i need to get an amp also or just a decent head unit?
- Ive been thinking about tinting the tailights, but ive herd it is illegal; can anyone shed any light on this, and whether or not its worth doing just a light coat and getting away with it?
- Clear side indicators, whats the go? Ive seen alot of people putting 380 ones on.
- Colored number plate lights, illegal yes?
- Colored parkers, also illegal?
- Is it better to keep the dash/interior as stock as possible? Have been contemplating custom dials/leds, but thought ahead and realised it might not be so desirable for the person who one day buys it.
- Im a bit dissapointed with the SportsRyder springs, they ride great but dont sit very low at all. The back is not bad, but the front isnt to nice. Will king lows upfront lower them nicely, or should i go for superlows, keeping in mind superlows may leave the back lower than the front, which will look silly.
- Any way to lower the car more without buying new springs/getting springs reset? Perhaps check if there are some spacers that have been put in? For SportsRyder springs, i expected the car to be alot lower than it is.
- Whats the go with grill and boot mods, i see alot of them, what are my options?
- What are some reasonably cheap options that will up the power of my car and keep it N/A? Have been contemplating the high flow throttle body offered here at AMC, aswell as gaskets.
- Is there any 3rd gen mods that are a must have, either performance, exterior or interior wise, that any of you could recommend to improve the car at all?
Thats it for now, will update if needed.
I appreciate ANY and ALL input guys, just a new member here trying to make his magna ****ing sweet to keep up with all of your fine looking machines around here!

if any exterior lights are coloured most of the time they are illegal.
painting the strips is easy, same with the side skirts.
you can buy paras from any wreckers whom have the right model vehicle. or from mitso but they are expensive.
380 indicators are clear.
if ur just replacing rear speakers no need for an amp.
pedder sports ryder springs are good, if you want lower go the next stage.
tinting rear lights are illegal. easy to do though.
what are you looking for in the car, performance, or exterior or interior mods?
what are you looking for in the car, performance, or exterior or interior mods?
I guess all 3, just little things i can do here and there to improve overall. I guess im more interested in exterior and performance than interior. Like i said, ive seen some neat grill/boot mods, whats the go with them?

most tj parts will fit. grills bonnets bars etc...
lower it, tint, paras, 380 indicators, tint tail lights :)
exhaust, intake filter, high low TB, piggy back computer.
interior... white dials, new head unit.

First off CLEAR INDICATORRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSS (just for you lucifier)
Ok now thats out of my system:
Para's will fit in no problem, best bet is fleabay or wreckers should be around 300 a set (have seen cheaper but pretty rare) Need to earth one of the wires for the normal lights to work.
Imho go a rear swaybar first they make such a huge difference its amazing.
Coloured anything regarding lights screams ricer and makes you cop bait, just stick with a good set of phillips GT150's or power2nights and normal everything else and you will be fine.
The high flow TB wont increase power but will make the pedal feel a hell of a lot more responsive. Sadly unless you want to crack open the motor there isnt much more then Exhaust, Intake + manifold Piggyback to do really.
Also any other mods usually come out of Veradas so keep an eye out as most of there parts look the piece

Be wary that parabolic headlights have a **** beam pattern and are effectively worse than executive headlights. That said, they look freakin pimp so I bought a set, never regretted it.
- What will provide the most notable gain in handling, a rear sway bar or a front strut brace? Have read good things about both.
Rear sway bar will be more beneficial, front strut brace will do next to nothing.
- Is it a good idea to try and paint the plastic strip on the side of the car, aswell as the side skirts (also plastic), the same color as the car?
Yes, do it, makes the car look over 9000 times better.
- If i buy some 300/350/400w 6x9s, will i need to get an amp also or just a decent head unit?
Stay away from 6x9's and spend more money on your front stage, amped 6/6.5" component speakers up front and stock rears.
- Ive been thinking about tinting the tailights, but ive herd it is illegal; can anyone shed any light on this, and whether or not its worth doing just a light coat and getting away with it?
It's illegal, but then again its only illegal if you get caught. Just tint them a sensible amount so you can still see a decent amount of light coming out of them and the reflector is still visible/effective.
- Clear side indicators, whats the go? Ive seen alot of people putting 380 ones on.
Yeah they are pretty sweet, I've heard a lot about them but I don't know where people get them from.
- Colored number plate lights, illegal yes?
Illegal, but they look cool. Keep them stock or go LED white.
- Colored parkers, also illegal?
Yeah, but they look cool.
- Is it better to keep the dash/interior as stock as possible? Have been contemplating custom dials/leds, but thought ahead and realised it might not be so desirable for the person who one day buys it.
Spot on, keep it simple, you'll keep your options open for the next person who will buy it.
Fail. Go King superlow fronts and low rears. Or if you want to go lower, try some KMac.
- Any way to lower the car more without buying new springs/getting springs reset? Perhaps check if there are some spacers that have been put in? For SportsRyder springs, i expected the car to be alot lower than it is.
You can compress the springs but I don't like the idea of that....
- Whats the go with grill and boot mods, i see alot of them, what are my options?
Too many options, just go a chrome verada grille if you can find one... Failing that, use some chrome stripping like I and others have done, it looks pimp.
- What are some reasonably cheap options that will up the power of my car and keep it N/A? Have been contemplating the high flow throttle body offered here at AMC, aswell as gaskets.
Cheap and increasing the power of your magna don't usually go in the same sentence unless 'cheap' is preceded by 'not'. The easiest thing to do is change the rear muffler and add a K&N panel filter, the rest is either too expensive or offers a marginal increase.
- Is there any 3rd gen mods that are a must have, either performance, exterior or interior wise, that any of you could recommend to improve the car at all?
Clear indicators yo.
Thats it for now, will update if needed.

well hit the search button, you will find everything you asked.. but in the meantime:
well performance wise if you haven't done so already straight through muffler and k&n panel filter. then i would prob say high flowed tb and barrys mods (i think he still does them)
after that things start going up in price.
for handling get a rear sway bar first. been a lot of stories where the strut brace isn't noticable..
ok. well theres my input.

Diamante chrome rear garnish looks pretty hot, some people like it, some don't but if I had a 3rd gen I would be!!!
Oh and woodgrain is nice for the interior too, if you are into that. But it's like gold. squeaker has a second set, but you might have to sell your soul for him to give it to you haha, nah just kidding - he wont.

End of the day id say keep it simple and smooth and your laughing. Cos it is a Magna not some r33 ricer boy hoonmobile
OK
Parabolics - done, haven seen pairs on fleabay for 180 up to 400, so ill keep an eye out for a cheap pair.
Rear sway bar - done, have noticed whiteline are common, are they my best bet for a decent one? What am i looking at for price, and how hard is the install?
Painting side plastics - just your good old spray can auto paint from autobarn? Or is that my wishful thinking?
Speakers - i might look at doing 6x9s, because ive seen some impressive results in friends cars, but, having said that, ill see what other recommendations i get from other members
LEDs - white ones, im thinking for number plate lights and dash. Where to get em from, what ones, and whats my options for whiter parkers/lights? Should i wait til i get the paras before getting nice bulbs?
Indicators - done, where can i get me some?
Tinting tailights - if its illegal, im not sure, cos ive had my fair share of problems with insurance...
Grill - ive noticed the chrome stripping people have used, but my grill is crosses rather than downward slats...
Springs - these are the last things on my mind atm
Performance - i know it was wishful thinking, i guess i ws talking more marginal increases than anything else. The High flow TB any good? What about slightly more expensive options like cams/manifolds etc?

Around 220 give or take and pretty easy DIY around 45-1hour give or take.
Painting side plastics - just your good old spray can auto paint from autobarn? Or is that my wishful thinking?
Yeah but pull them off first then prime then Paint, get properly mixed paint for that colour code as well
Speakers - i might look at doing 6x9s, because ive seen some impressive results in friends cars, but, having said that, ill see what other recommendations i get from other members

If you want to go ultra white ones Phillips make em but not in LED. Im using GT150's in my parras with a blueish Parker also from Phillips (cant remember what one though) and looks the goods and gives out decent light
Indicators - done, where can i get me some?
giggle giggle giggle (sorry heh) Mitsubishi for around 12 bucks each just ask for 380 indicators
Tinting tailights - if its illegal, im not sure, cos ive had my fair share of problems with insurance...
Usually its illegal as it dulls the reflector but most cops dont like it
Grill - ive noticed the chrome stripping people have used, but my grill is crosses rather than downward slats...
Yeah Tj ones are different for Tj's i believe you have to get KJ XI grilles for chrome ones.
Springs - these are the last things on my mind atm

The high flow TB's are pimp but hold off getting one till EZboy is back into doing his as RPW ones are the same but dearer. manifolds again from ezboy just developed one that gets around 10kw atw with basic breathing mods for around 800. Cams wont get change out of 2k once its all done and setup.

Plonking all your money into 6x9s is not a wise idea. If you want good sound, upgrade your front speakers, as thats what you as the driver should hear. If you want good bass, add a sub and amp.
what ones, and whats my options for whiter parkers/lights?
Have a search for the headlight FAQ by heathyoung.

Changing cams isn't going to get you much but it sets the platform to gain more as it opens up the options. You'll need higher compression, at least a piggyback to see any good gains with cams. Hence why the ralliart magnas came with higher compression pistons and a slightly twicked ecu.

In terms of audio recommendations the best thing I ever did for my car was put in a set of Focal Polyglass V1 6.5" splits. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend. The first step I'd recommend is a new head unit, a set a of splits and a two channel amp to power them. Later on depending on funds add a sub and another amp to power it and you'll have a pretty nice system.

Got a new question
Have a 2.5 inch cat back exhaust system, cat into high flow muffler into mandrel bend into rear resonator with a small dumpy coming out of the resonator.
Seeing as magnas have no cut away for the exhaust tip, and my system isnt at all visible from the rear, was wondering if theres any easy way to put a tip on, so that it pokes out from the bottom of the car? Maybe just something from autobarn or something? Will it need to be welded on or will it just jam straight into the 2.5 inch pipe?

Mate, don't worry about the sportsryders as being rubbish pedders they will go soft and sag in time.
Your handling, get rid of the pedders, put in King, front brace and rear bar....no bull!
Tail lights are there so people can see you stop and turn, dont tint them ffs
Para will bolt in, just need to be wired up
Dash, go for it, is easy to change back
I thought the para's needed some wires cutting and spliced in order for the low beams to work?

All you need to do is cut the solid red wires on the low beams and earth the car end to the body and tape up the plug end. That's it, plug them in and everything and works as per normal. The only difficult part was persuading the indicator section to fit under the guards without dropping the bumper.
