View Full Version : K&N Panel Filter - one word...
Delfin
Nah, i mean WOW
I just picked up my panel filter from autobarn and installed it, went for a quick drive, and DAMN is that thing impressive - and its just an air filter! Who knew this would make such a difference? The smoothness of acceleration has increased 100%, and the car actually sounds like its breathing better, its got a nicer sound upfront now too. Who knew 85 bucks could change so much?
How did you guys all go when you got yours? Did you notice the difference? Has anyone tried both a panel and pod filter? Im interested to see the difference between the two.
Also, is there anything possibly BAD about the panel filter? From the research ive done, i cant find any complaints or problems with them.
Im just really impressed with it, i didnt think it would make that much of a difference.

Yeh, i looked on fleabay, cheapest was 75 bucks, but plus 10 bucks postage, i thought meh id rather buy it legit, i know it hasnt been used and if i have any problems i can go straight to autobarn or k&n.
Well worth the money in my opinion, talked to the guy who sold it to me, he said he used to have a TF magna and a couple of years ago when he bought his they cost well over 100 dollars.
Besides, its like not even a days work for me.
So im happy.

I paid $85, and was happy with the price, 65 was a bargain, hope it was the real deal. The best deal on Ebay at the time was 75 plus 10 postage:nuts:

i picked mine on ebay for $66 including postage, it was used but the guy cleaned it before he sent it to me. it made a lot of difference in fuel economy and when you stand at the front of my car you can hear this sucking noise :D

$85? thats cheap... i paid $110 for mine when I bought it...
Best way to keep these performing is to keep them oiled and cleaned. THe K&N recharge kit is also a good investment.

$20 on special at autobarn

I paid $20 for my K&N.
I wouldn't say it increased power at all, marginal throttle response improvement. Perhaps you were wearing heavier shoes... Butt dyno ftw
Worthwhile 'mod' (replacement air filter) though, much better than a pod.

good investment just for its reusable nature!
your old air filter must have been fairly black and dusted up
for you to notice the big difference :)
how many kms did you do on the old filter anyway?

Sorry mate, but your percieved miracle gains are more than likely just buyer placebo effect.
K&Ns seem to give slightly sharper throttle response, but you are kidding if you think are gaining any significant power from it. There has been extensive testing done on a huge range of air filters in modern cars, and the conclusion is they rarely/never pose any real restriction in the intake.
Although if your old filter was VERY dirty and clogged, then switching to a new one (K&N or not) might make a real difference.
Having said that, K&Ns aren't a bad investment - as long as you don't damage it, you can keep cleaning and re-using it, and they do seem to improve throttle response slightly.

You're such a happy, positive fellow to have around these forums. Thanks once again for putting a damper on a forum member excited over a new purchase :) Nice save on the remainder of your post though lol

It's being realistic though Bon... It's like those 30hp+ chips off eBay, you buy them and you think you feel the increase of power (nawwwwwwwws vtec yo etc) but all you really feel is your foot pushing the pedal down quicker, its all a placebo.
That said though, if the OP was using a phone book as a filter before, he might have felt an increase for real real, not for play play.

Agreed, and even in my own post i mention keeping them clean for better performance as opposed to the dust collecters that are normally in their place.
Just disappointing that someone gets a dampener put on them so quickly...
My two cents is all, everyone likes to put theirs in!

I agree with the above statement 100%
Just put a K&N into my XR8 ...WOW it did nothing!!! lol
Im sorry but there seems to be a misunderstanding here.
Show me where i said there was a gain in power.
FAIL
If you go read my posts, youll notice all i said was that the acceleration is alot smoother.
I never said, nor suggested that i gained any power by putting in the filter.

I re-read your post, and you are correct. Though I did think it was implied 1st time round. Although I'm curious as to what you mean when you say "Acceleration is 100% smoother"...how can acceleration be more smooth? Unless it was previously surging, had a flat spot etc.
Btw even though I have K&n, I have decided to stick with the OEM filter. Why? because it seems k&ns let it larger particles of dirt/crap than OEM filters. This is just a precaution and probably not needed, but I don't like the idea of more/larger particles getting inside the blower "blades".

i noticed a difference when i fitted mine too - and i paid 85 from autobarn too (only had it about a month now i guess)
and yeah, you feel its breathing a bit better, and i noted that fuel econ also improved marginally - on my last road trip with it on, i got a flat 9L/100km, which is the best ever i gotten!
feels like its breathing better at WOT too - did a few WOT standing starts, and i def felt a difference there.
but yeah, now you just have to clean it - good practise is to clean it whenever you service the car, and the service kits arnt too expensive really. :)
im happy with mine :)
EDIT - iv now found that the accelerator is a lil more touchy, the car moves a lot easier off the line - but its annoying in traffic sometimes :(

Ive also heard this, but its a risk im willing to take, and from my own personal research, it is not a common thing to happen. It usually occurs when there is poor maintenance of the filter, ie: cleaning and re-oiling are not performed often enough/correctly. There is also stories of oil saturation due to the filter being oiled, but this is complete bull because in most if not all cases too much oil is used in the resaturation process after cleaning the filter.
I was exaggerating when i said "acceleration is 100% smoother", but it is NOTICEABLY smoother, and their is a nice note up front. I think the filter makes more of a difference when an aftermarket exhaust is fitted, such as on my car, when backpressure is improved over the stock mitsubishi exhaust. An aftermarket exhaust and high flow filter seem to go hand in hand.
In the future im looking at installing a high flow throttle body aswell.
In the end, 85 dollars is a small price to pay for a filter that will never need replacing, just regular maintenance, and makes a noticable difference for some people.

My gear change when dropping back for a hill climb or over take is smoother, there is no delay, whereas before there was at least 1-2 seconds. And the main reason for purchase, fuel economy, is showing off big time! I get 9.9 with 60-40 Highway-city driving. Best investment so far.
i was very happy with the change in the engine's character after fitting the K&N panel. Then i was absolutely blown away by EZ BOYS throttle body

Yeh about that, i want to get me one of those throttle bodies but someone told me to wait for ez boy to get a new one out, can anyone shed some light on this? Or are the tbs still avaliable now?
EDIT: Yeh Magna00 posted this in my 3rd gen mod questions thread:

They're currently on hold (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46828&page=18) (presumably due to the intake manifolds nearing completion).

well i think the issue is with EZ BOY having the time, he seems focused on the streetfighter right now.

im looking at doing this mod soon ot the TR
haven't really looked into it enough though yet to make decisions
Having only got the car a few months ago, not sure if its had its filter changed or whatever at all, so probably should check it out
Especially considering I have **** fuel eco, and people are saying these effect it slightly

The pod is good, the panel is good, I wouldnt put much thought into it. Just make sure if you buy a pod its enclosed.
Only way to make your fuel economy better is to take your right foot off the pedal!

Ive ran both types of filter and notice SFA between them i would go the panel for the reason its easier to install.

Enclosed as the pod filter is, enclosed :S
Lancer to magna, probably not, ring up supercheap or whatever and ask them, some stores stock them for the magna/lancer some dont. from what i remember working there, they do not match.

haha yeah my leadfoot'll be half of it
So either panel or pod theres no real better one in terms of any performance/economy or anything?
Might get an enclosed pod then
I'll check it out

Id say the only difference is a panel is easy to install, took me 2 minutes. Enclosed pod requires a bit of fiddling.

Agreed, although ive never had to touch the air box, took me a few seconds to work out how to get it off, a few to rip the old filter out and get the new filter out of the box and plastic, and a minute or so to figure out how to get the bastard in.

When i got mine i could feel a difference to but only because my old filter was so clogged i could use it as a bucket ( I actually poured water in it and it held it lol )
Heaps better than an original one. The 1st gen original filters are bloody expensive. The K&N's pay for them selves after 3 or 4 services.
I decided to clean my K&N for the first time in 2 years today. Wasn't even dirty anyways.
